As literature, the Bible is particularly receptive to literary study and to the development of analytical skills and techniques, for at its frequent best it is characterized by exceptional brevity and simplicity. The major narratives have been polished by long retelling: they contain nothing in excess, nothing merely decorative or ornamental. Thus no detail may be ignored, for even the slightest is likely to be of importance, either in advancing the action of the story or in providing significant revelation of character. Since the details are generally few in such sparse narratives, students soon learn through practice not to overlook those that are available, for they usually will find that they serve a discernible function. The habit of attending to detail that may be gained from analysis of these concentrated stories will benefit students in all areas of study. Students will be introduced to book construction and design and encouraged to produce their own hand crafted manuscripts employing an imaginative use of paper, inks, and hand crafted writing tools. Attention will be focused on each and every word, letter and line so that each of these elements is taken into account by the writer in her attempt to convey to the reader her thoughts and feelings. This comes close to our conventional notion of poetry, but more properly what is sought for is the highest quality writing each student is capable of. When each and every mark on the paper is conceived as having the potential to convey meaning, and when the creative arrangement of word, letter, & line (as well as drawing) can all be turned into vehicles of charged communication, then words AS WELL AS LETTERS AND LINES take on new meaning. The sky is the limit here as we strive to get beyond drivel and doodle and scribble. But, as this is an experimental workshop, everything and anything goes and it does if done with the mind fully aware. This course is very complimentary with my modern and contemporary poetry classes and if you1ve already taken those classes this will be a grand opportunity to produce your own modern text that is not confined by the conventional structures of grammar and syntax which if INTENTIONALLY broken or distorted can greatly extend a writer1s field of operation.CLASSROOM METHODOLOGYWe will share and examine each student1s work in progress. This encourages students to break out of their own work habits and explore other avenues of creativity. As we feel that reading and writing go hand in hand, we will be reading in class from texts selected by random operations and then attempting to use these fragments as substance for new texts. There will be biweekly conferences with the instructor so that individual problems and needs can be addressed. At the end of the semester the best pieces from eachstudent1s work will be assembled into a class anthology.FINAL NOTE This course is intended not only to be a pleasurable and exciting creative exercise, but hopefully, moreover, will foster a greater appreciation for THE BOOK as an object of art and instill a striving for the highest standard of writing in general-writing that exhilarates and quickens the mind. After taking this course, students who have worked to the best of their ability will no longer be looking OUT at books but rather looking IN them for ways to improve their own writing skills and techniques. Their frame of reference will be one of appreciation and critical evaluation rather then that of spectator. My expectation as well as my energy for this class are always extremely HIGH! Please be sure yours is too! If youre motivated to be creative heres your real chance. Course open to a maximum of 20 students評分方式No examinations, no papers, no oral presentations. Your manuscript becomes your grade. Whatever effort you put out, that1s what you get back as a grade.EL237B 英文作文 IB教師:白大維課群級數:語言訓練類初時間:四678教室:A110課程說明Movies, Poems and Songs of Innocence and Experience:In this course we want to explore composition through movies and poems. In every age man/woman has written about death, its nature, its forms, process and implications, and written bravely, unsparingly, gracefully and wittily. Perhaps, no one theme have writers shown themselves more lively. For the key to the question of death unlocks the door of life. This course introduces students to read a great amount of texts whose central concern is about death, both in written and film forms; its purpose is to show how through an acceptance of our finiteness, we can grow; for death provides a key to the meaning of human existence. Death offers each of us a chance to discover lifes true meaning by coming to terms with death as a part of human development.EL237D 英文作文IB教師:易鵬課群級數:語言訓練類中時間:四678教室:C2-109課程說明:This course will concentrate on enabling the students in acquiring the following skills: the ability to do summaries, second, the ability to formulate an argument and finally to do simple analysis and critique. At the beginning, students will be asked to do summaries and responses based on textual and other graphic and visual materials.
