Ask students two questions:a. Do you like detective stories or films?b. Do you know some famous detectives?2. Appreciate some pictures of famous detectives home and abroad such as Bao gong, Di Renjie, Black Cat , Conan and Sherlock Holmes. Is Sherlock Holmes a real person in real life? a character in the novelConan Doyle(the writer)3. Let students know about a famous writer of detective stories-Wilkie Collins: he was born in 1824 in London and his two most famous novels are Woman in White and The Moonstone.(with pictures) Today we are going to learn one of them - The Moonstone.Step III Fast-readingLet students read the passage quickly and silently and then divide the passage into three parts and get the general idea of each part, at the same time, pay attention to the question: When and where did the story happen? (After reading) let students exchange ideas with their neighbors and then give the answer.Part I (para1) the background of the storyPart II (para2-5) the loss of the Moonstone Part III (para6-10) the investigation(Encourage and help students try to summarize the main idea of each part using one word)(Bb)Step IV Careful-reading a. Finding out the characters in the storyNext let students read the passage once again and try to find the characters mentioned in the passage and pay attention to the relationships between them.1. An English man: Rachels uncle2. Rachel Verinder: the Englishmans niece3. Franklin Blake: Rachels childhood friend4.Godfrey: a successful bachelor with many lady admirers, who asks Rachel to marry him5.Dr Candy: the person quarreling with Franklin6. Sergeant Cuff: the person in charge of the investigation of the theft7. Rosanna: Rachels maid who seems fond of Franklin.8.The strange Indians: the persons appearing at Rachels party(Give students some cards with the names of the characters )Call some of them to try to describe the characters or act them out according to the passage and let others guess who they are. b. Reading comprehension questions Since we learned English, we have done so many reading comprehension questions, and all of them belong to these four kinds:1. detailed information 2. main idea 3. word guessing4. inferred information Give students some of these reading comprehension questions according to the story: 1.
