本科毕业论文(设计)开题报告拟定的毕业论文(设计)题目Pragmatic Analysis of Vague Language in English Business Correspondence系Foreign Languages Faculty专 业English学生姓名冯洁玲Feng Jieling指导教师朱文权一、选题依据(包括目的、意义、国内外现状和发展趋势):Purpose:Vagueness is always an avoided topic in business English because it may lead to misunderstanding between the communicators. Thus, little attention has been paid to vague language in business English. Therefore, one of the objectives of the present study is to describe and analyze when, how and why vague language is used in almost all the fields of business world.When reviewing the prior studies of vague language, it is easy to notice that the theoretical interpretation of this phenomenon has not been dealt with so far. Contrasted to those earlier studies, the present study is going to be conducted to concentrate on the pragmatic analysis of vague language in business English correspondence. Its ultimate goal is to give an account of how vague language is used so as to help the communicators to reach the intended purpose and facilitate the communicators understanding of it, and how vague language is employed to influence business.Current Situation and Trends: In business writing, there is a golden guideline that called “Seven Cs” (correctness, conciseness, clarity, concreteness, courtesy, consideration, completeness) principle, which requires the language be precise and accurate in order not to cause misunderstandings and disputes. Therefore, vague language is principally not favored; few scholars have studied in this field of vague language in earlier years. Since the foreign linguist Channell put forward the vague theory and recognizes the advantages of vague language, more and more people realize the significance of vague language in business writing and scholars begin to do researches on the study of vague language in broad fields, especially the business correspondence.Significance:This thesis has both theoretical and empirical significance. It is written based on some practical English business correspondences and emphasizes on the nature of vague expressions, their pragmatic functions and on the relationship between vague expressions and communicative strategies. Furthermore, as this thesis is targeted at the vague expressions in English business correspondence, the common notion that precise and accurate language is preferred in business correspondence in order to avoid misunderstanding will have a little change in this thesis. Instead, appropriate use of vague language will lead to smooth business communication and enhance the successful conclusions of business transactions. This will in return enlighten business English teachers to improve their teaching by introducing vague expressions to their course. Moreover, in this process, language learners can learn how to use vague expressions appropriately to achieve their communicative intentions and thus improve their communicative competence. Last but not least, this thesis may raise businessmens awareness of the strategic use of vague expressions in business communication. 二、研究内容(具体研究/设计内容,重点解决的问题,预期结果):Research Content:The present study is venturing to give a comprehensive study on the vague language in English business correspondence, with the purpose of exploring the following questions:1 .When is vague language employed in English business correspondence?2. Why is vague language employed in English business correspondence?3. What specific functions does vague language perform in English business correspondence? Findings:According to the paper, readers can have a good understanding of vague language and the appropriate use of vague language in English business correspondence in order to write a good and efficient business correspondence so as to achieve the intended successful business. 三、研究方法、手段及步骤:Research Methods:1. Reading a great numbers of business writing materials which concerning to the vague language applied in the English business correspondence.2. Reading relevant books and collecting information.3. Choosing books or materials and selecting useful information.4. Discuss with the advisor.5. Referring to some ideas of other writers of this topic and comparing with mine.Steps:1. Choose the topic.2. Collect the relevant materials.3. Fix the topic4. Work out the outlines.5. Start to write research proposal 6. Start to write the 1st draft.7. Edit the 1st draft, write the 2nd draft.8. Revise the 2nd draft and finished the final draft.四、创新之处:By combining the other educational experts opinions and analyzing the collected business writings, the analysis can be more comprehensive and practical. Furthermore, this paper is organized in a logical way, which helps readers follow smoothly.
