The volunteers had 13 meaningful conversations, sold $140 in merchandise, and collected $30 in donations! 29 pamphlets were taken, and 17 people signed up on our email list a record! The volunteers told me they had a great time, but that we should definitely replace the gorilla suit. Due to windy conditions, and the fragility of the stuffed gorilla costume, the head of the gorilla kept falling off the suit which scared the children! A giant plush monkey would be appealing for kids and families to come over and get their picture taken next to the monkey. Deb and Susan said they are going to get us a large plush monkey that is kid friendly thank you! Please let me know if you would be interested in volunteering at the PI informational table at future festivals!UPCOMING FUND RAISERSRock the Monkey Benefit October 24th and October 31st!Please mark your calendars! -Rock the Monkey in Madison, WISaturday, October 24th at The Frequency in the downtown area. I think that is a good idea; that way students arent hauling huge bags of trash to school. You could also maybe have a bake sale or a fun run (good way to promote exercise too!).”Re: finding alternative fund raisers to Jane GoodallGayeLyn wrote in and suggested Melissa Etheridge as she has worked on animal rescue causes. Dana suggested we contact Jane Wiedlin, original member of the Go Gos, to help us out as she lives near Madison now!Great suggestions! I will follow up on the celebrities and incorporate the soda can tabs into my presentation the next time I am asked to speak at a school venue. and we still need to research newspaper recycling to see if it would be worth it to have kids bring in newspapers. TOPIC SUMMARYNew monkey discovered in Brazilian Amazon/s/nm/20090707/sc_nm/us_brazil_monkey July 7th, source: ReutersTiny monkey species discovered in the Amazon rainforest/2009/0707-new_monkey_wcs.html July 7th, source: MArticles summarized by Lisa: Fabio Rhe of The Wildlife Conservation Societyand associateshave published an article in the online edition of the International Journal of Primatology documenting a new monkey species. The Muras saddleback tamarin (Saguinus fuscicollis mura), named for the Mura Indians that live in the same area, is gray and dark brown in color with a mottled saddle. This type of saddleback tamarin weighs less than three-quarters of a pound and is nine inches tall with a 12.6 inch tail. “The newly found monkey was first spotted by scientists in 2007 in the Brazilian state of Amazonas and is related to the saddleback tamarin monkeys, known for their distinctively marked backs, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) said.” (Reuters, 2) Rhe, along with other colleagues are concerned by the planned development in the area. The paving of Manaus-Poro Velho (BR 319) highway will aid logging anddeforestation for cattle pasture that will fragment and destroy the habitat of this newly discovered primate. Two Hydroelectric dams and a proposed gas pipeline are also threatening the Muras saddlebacks habitat. Dr. Avecita Chicchon, Director of WCSs Latin America Programs stated We hope that the discovery will draw attention to conservation in this very fragile but biodiverse region. (, 7) This is not the first species that WCS researchers have discovered in recent years. The Arunachal macaque was discovered in India in 2004; the Madiddi monkey was discovered in Bolivia in 2005 and the Kipunji was discovered in Tanzania in 2005 (, 8). The continued discovery of new species is a reminder that we know too little about our world to let it disappear through development before it is even discovered.Application to Primates Incorporated: This article emphasizes the importance of educating current and future generations about conservation. Earlier this year, we teamed up with Ricardo Cavalcanti, owner of two plots of land in Brazil. We plan on allowing him to raise funds under the name of Primates Incorporated so that he can protect his rain forest land while establishing a primate sanctuary and rehabilitation center on his other land near the ocean. This topic of discovering a new primate species could help us get a grant from conservation organizations! Patricia, a talented and multi-lingual Primates Incorporated volunteer, is communicating with her connections in Brazil to see how Ricardo can set up a nonprofit there so funds can be transferred from the US to Brazil. This is a great addition to the mission for Primates Incorporated as we will have both a conservation program and a sanctuary program here in the states for monkeys who cant go back to the wild. Just like with the Primates Incorporated sanctuary, this will be a long and slow process, but well worth it! FUND-RAISING PROGRESSTo date we have raised $27,000 toward our goal of $600,000 that is needed to purchase land, build the primate sanctuary, and run it for one year. -Plus we will need approximately $300,000 per year after that to run and sustain the sanctuary. We will continue writing grants, contacting celebrities, coordinating benefits, and contacting pharmaceutical companies until we get there! Please let me know if you have any other fund-raising ideas or know of someone else to contact! Thanks for reading and for caring about the primates! Have a great weekend!Sincerely, AmyAmy M.
