Conduct a body scanThe body-scan meditation is a chance to help you tune in to the tiny tingles, throbs and thrums(轻微不适) that we often dont even notice. Heres how to do it: lie down or sit still in a chair with your eyes closed, and begin to take inventory of the sensation in each part of your body, starting at your toes and travelling up from here. Ifs a good way for people to release tension they dont even realize theyre experiencing.Try gentle yogaMindfulness isnt all closed eyes and a statue-still seat. Stretching, too, can be meditation. Cycle through slow, gentle poses, like cradling a : knee to your chest while lying on your back, or a simple cat-cow (pictured) on all fours. Before you start, set aside a few minutes to calm down and focus on your breath. And once youre done, spend a few moments lying flat on your back with your muscles relaxed.Do a breathing exerciseSimply breathing while paying attention to the breath is the heart of any mindfulness practice. Whats more, it can be practiced almost anywhere. The goal is to let thoughts pass like clouds without getting sucked into what they might mean. To cultivate awareness of the breath, find a relaxed seat and notice without thinking about it or trying to change it一how you naturally inhale(吸 气)and exhale.Take a walking meditationWalking is also a good framework for practicing mindfulness. Find a quiet place inside or outdoors to take your walka mall, a park, your neighborhood. While you walk, focus on each small, slow step: the lifting of one foot, the heel-first transfer of weight, the shift to the other. Every time your foot hits the ground, bring your attention to your breath and the sensations in your body.56. All of the four strategies involve.A. muscle relaxationB. mindfulnessC. stretchingD. body sensation57.If you feel stressed and your back hurts, “ works best for you.A. Conduct a body scanB. Try gentle yogaC. Do a breathing exerciseD. Take a walking meditationBCommunication can be a tricky business, whether its your profession or youre just exchanging words and ideas with your fellow humans. A true story about science fiction that was accidentally reported as fact a century ago is proof positive.A little fault and a lot of imagination misled science writers for decades. The error may still be fuelling peoples fascination with the planet Mars today, suggests Walt Hickey in FiveThirtyE.It all started with a simple mistranslation. In 1877, the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli claimed to have seen channels running along the surface of the planet Mars. In Italian, he wrote about these “canali”a word mistranslated in English publications as “canals.”Schiaparelli later said the channels were an illusion that he saw incorrectly. But before that happened, the canals became a realityof sorts. In 1894,Percival Lowell, a wealthy Bostonian heard about Schiaparellis alleged canals and became inspired. He built the Lowell Observatory, an observatory in Arizona (that still exists today) and used it to look at Mars. He, too, saw the canalsand began developing a theory of life on Mars. The canals, he said, were actual irrigation systems built by Martians. In 1895, Lowell wrote about it for The Atlantic Monthly.Science editors and writers were into it. Lowells speculations grew to be accepted as scientific observations. “Indeed, even The Gray Lady went head over heels for Martian fan fiction,” Hickey writes of the New York Times. For example, in a 1906 story, Lilian Whiting declared with certainty that there is life on the planet Mars, basing her story on Lowells “findings.” Her story began:The legions(大量的)of canals on Mars, forming a colossal and a wisely planned system designed to irrigate the cases of the vast deserts which make up the surface of this planet, are an unanswerable argument for the existence of conscious intelligent life. And she was not alone in relying on this source. Lowell was also behind a 1911 story by Mary Proctor published in the Times.Proctor reported that based on drawings and sightings Lowell claimed to have made from an observatory in Arizona, Martians completed two new massive canals in two years. “Vast engineering works accomplished in an incredibly short time by our planetary neighborsWonders of the September Sky,” Proctor wrote.Others continued to cover the canals-on-Mars theory as established science. For example, James Young covered Mars in 1911 for the New York Times and discussed the possibility of building a similar network of canals in the Sahara Desert. When Lowell died in 1916, his theories had their critics. But his supposedMartian proof-of-lifeby then totalling some 550 canalswas considered sufficiently legitimate to deserve uncritical coverage in his New York Times obituary (讣告).58. Of all the people mentioned in the passage, believed in the existence ofcanals on Mars.A. fourB. fiveC. sixD. seven59.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Schiaparelli 5s observation of the canals contributed to the popularity of Lowells theory.B. Schiaparelli admitted he had made a mistake in the translation of the word “canali”.C. Science editors and writers of the New York Times were enthusiastic supporters of Lowells theory.D. Lowell is worth remembering for he developed his theory into established science.60.What is the authors attitude towards Percival Lowell?A. Supportive. B. Negative.C. Objective.D. Ironic.61.Which of the following sayings best summarizes the main idea of the passage?A. The error of the past is the wisdom and success of the future.B. Many hands make light work.C. Knowledge is a treasure, but practice is the key to it.D. A false report, once released, will remain so in circulation.C Young blood is being trialled as a treatment for conditions like Alzheimers, and aged mice that received injections of blood from human teenagers showed improved cognition(认知),memory and physical activity levels. But these studies rely on young people donating their blood: if this became the go-to therapy for age-related disease it would be difficult to get enough donations to fulfil demand. The stem cells in our blood could provide an alternative approach. Our red and white blood cells are made by stem cells that themselves come from “mother” stem cells in bone marrow. But as we age, the number of these mother stem cells declines. One of the worlds longest-lived women seemed to only have two left in her blood when she died at age 115.The decline in mother stem cells causes people to have fewer red blood cells, and white blood cells called B and T lymphocytes(淋巴细胞).These declines can cause anaemia(贫血症)and weaken the immune system. “ ,” says HartmutGeiger at the University of Ulm in Germany. When Geigers team examined the bone marrow in mice, they found that older animals have much lower levels of a protein called osteopontin(骨桥蛋白). To see if this protein has an effect on blood stem ceils, the team injected stem cells into mice that lacked osteopontin and found that the cells rapidly aged. But when older stem cells were mixed in a dish with osteopontin and a protein that activates it, they began to produce white blood cells just as young stem cells do. This suggests osteopontin makes stem cells behave more youthfully. “,Geiger says. “Its exciting, says Hanadie Yousef at Stanford University in California. But longer term studies are needed to see whether this approach can rejuvenate(使年轻) the whole blood system, she says.Until now, most efforts to use blood as a rejuvenation agent have focused on plasma(血浆),the liquid component, as some believe it carries dissolved
