The ExplorerBIm always thinking that Im a tough guy but I have learned something about myself since I moved from Long Island to Florida three years ago. Even though I own a home in Port St. Lucie just minutes from the ocean, an uncontrollable urge wells up to return to Long Island even as others make their way south. I guess I am a snowbird stuck in reverse. Instead of enjoying Floridas mild winters, I willingly endure the severe weather on Long Island, the place I called home for 65 years.Im like a migratory bird(候鸟)that has lost its sense of timing and direction, my wings flapping against season. So what makes me fly against the tide of snowbirds? The answer has a lot to do with my reluctance to give up the things that define who I am. Once I hear that the temperature on Long Island has dipped into the range of 40 to 50 degrees, I begin to long for the sight and crackling sound of a wood fire. I also long for the bright display of colors-first in the fall trees, and then in the lights around homes and at Rockefeller Center. Floridians decorate, too, but cant create the special feel of a New England winter.I suppose the biggest reason why I return is to celebrate the holidays with people I havent seen in months. What could be better than sitting with family and friends for a Thanksgiving turkey dinner, or watching neighbors children excitedly open gifts on Christmas? Even the first snowfall seems special. I especially enjoy seeing a bright red bird settling on a snow-covered branch. (My wife and I spend winters at a retirement community in Ridge, and Im grateful that I dont have to shovel.)While these simple pleasures are not unique to Long Island, they are some of the reasons why I come back. Who says you cant go home?24. Whats the difference between Florida and Long Island?A. The snowbirds in Florida are rarer.B. Winters in Florida are milder.C. Weather in Florida is severer.D. Florida is nearer to the ocean.25. What does the underlined word “reluctance” in Paragraph 3 mean?A. Motivation.B. Expectation.C. Coincidence.D. Unwillingness.26. Which of the following words can best describe the author?A. Imaginative and outspoken.B. Homesick and easy-going.C. Hard-working and serious.D. Anxious and painful.27. Whats the authors purpose in writing the text?A. To describe his dream to be a free bird.B. To express his feeling of missing his hometown.C. To praise the beauty and warmth of his hometown.D. To explain the reasons for moving from his hometown.COver 130 schoolmates from the Society for Science & the Publics high school science competitions gathered for a panel (座谈小组) discussion. Hosted by Society President Maya Ajmera, the panel consisted of science professionals and Society schoolmates.Ajmera started the event by asking the successful women panelists about young scientists faced when entering the professional world.Hackman, a health policy reporter for the Wall Street Journal, admitted that in following a career in science, some scientists dislike the long , seemingly dull lab hours when they could follow a job with more “shine”.About what was hoped for in their career, Angel, who founded Science from Scientists, encouraged the audience to ask themselves, “What influence did I have? What did I leave behind?” She hoped her company, whose task was to help children in grades 4 8 develop a love for math and science, will live beyond her. “Even if you help one person,” she reflected, “you have already made a difference”.As for their support systems, they agreed on the value and support of the family in their professional developmen1. Hackman shared her background as a firs1genera1ion Iranian American and how her parents who knew little about science had fled the Iranian Revolution. While working with mother to complete her STS project, Hackman was surprised and grateful because while her mother did not understand the research, her willingness to learn and help made all the difference. The panelists stories and advice surely inspired the younger generations to follow a career in STEM. Ajmera was glad to see the diversity among the panelists and the audience, encouraging everyone to continue breaking barriers. Though a career path in the STEM is not always easy, it can be rewarding, especially when you have a great team behind you.28. What challenge do young scientists have?A. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?A. The greatness to be scientists.B. The effects the panel discussion has.C. The need to break barriers in science.D. The diversity among the panelists and the audience.DAcross Britain, burnt toast will be served to mothers in bed this morning as older sons and daughters rush to deliver their supermarket bunches of flowers. But, according to a new study, we should be placing a higher value on motherhood all year.Mothers have long known that their home workload was just as heavy as paid work. Now, the new study has shown that if they were paid for their parental labours, they would earn as much as $ 172,000 a year. The study looked at the range of jobs mothers do, as well as the hours they are working, to determine the figure. This would make their yearly income $ 30,000 more than the Prime Minister earns.By analysing the numbers, it found the average mother works 119 hours a week, 40 of which would usually be paid at a standard rate and 79 hours as overtime. After questioning 1,000 mothers with children under 18, it found that, on most days, mums started their routine work at 7am and finished at around 11pm.To calculate just how much mothers would earn from that labour, it suggested some of the roles that mums could take on, including housekeeper, part-time lawyer, personal trainer and entertainer. Being a part-time lawyer, at 48.98 an hour, would prove to be the most profitable of the “mum jobs”, with psychologist (心理学家) a close second. It also asked mothers about the challenges they face, with 80 percent making emotional demand as the hardest thing about motherhood.Over a third of mums felt they needed more training and around half said they missed going out with friends. The study shows mothers matter all year long and not just on Mothers Day. The emotional, physical and mental energy mothers devote to their, children can be never-ending, but children are also sources of great joy and happiness. Investing (投入) in time for parenting and raising relationships is money well spent.32. How much would a mother earn a year if working as the Prime Minister?A. 30,000. B. 142,000. C. 172,000. D. 202,000.33. The biggest challenge for most mothers is from .A. emotional demand B. low pay for work C. heavy workload D. lack of training34. What is stressed in the last paragraph?A. Mothers importance shows in family all year long.B. The sacrifices mothers make are huge but worthwhile.C. Mothers devotion to children can hardly be calculated.D. Investing time in parenting would bring a financial return.35. What can we conclude from the study?A. Mothers working hours should be largely reduced.B. Mothers should balance their time for work and rest.C. Mothers labour is of a higher value than it is realized.D. Mothers should be freed from housework for social life.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分;满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。Mary had feared the day she would draw a blank during a presentationThen one day during a 45-minute speech,it happened 36_To help herself get back on track,Mary asked the audience to look at the handout and tell her what topic was up nextAt the end of her presentation, audience members gave her top marks for organizationWhat I learned is that the audience doesnt care if you mess up,and what they care about is what you are going to do about it,Mary saidMy nervousness went away when I concentrated not on myself, but instead just thought,How is my speech going to help the audience? 37_Every single step of the way,ask yourself,Whats in it for them? 38_Carter is the founder of Canada-based presentation skills training companyWhen possible,he gets to the location of his presentation the day before to make sure all the electronic aids workHe wants to ensure the screen, lighting and inputs all work properlyIn addition, build an extra plan before you presenthe saidInvolve the audienceWhether you are giving a one-on-one talk or a speech in front of 400 people, think story-telling 39_The way to a persons head is through his heartSometimes all it takes is a few seconds to connect an audience member with a storyMoreover, one thing that shocks people back into attention is to leave an almost uncomfortably long pause 40_AKeep orderBBe preparedCThat brings them back to the speakerDShe forgot what she was going to sayEOnce you do that,it gets rid of the fearFStory-telling makes messages easy to remember GStories combine data and information with emotion第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1. 5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后所给各题四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。A comfort zone, particularly for students in high school, serves as a no-risk no-failure and no-rejection zone It 41 that most teenagers are not 42 to extend themselves or take risks in their life and they 43 want to escape from their parents.
