today as ever.”Capital in the TwentyFirst Century, by Thomas PikettyPikettys novel hit the shelves in August 2013 and sparked much discussion concerning income inequality throughout this year.Gates also got to sit down with Piketty himself after reading the nonfiction work to discuss the topic.“As I told him, although I have concerns about some of his secondary points and policy prescriptions, I agree with his most important conclusions:inequality is a growing problem and governments should play a role in reducing it.”How Asia Works, by Joe StudwellStudwells work, which was published in May 2014, addresses how countries such as Japan, South Korea and China have continued to achieve high growth, and why other countries have failed to do the same.“The agriculture section of the book was particularly insightful. It provided ample food for thought for me as well as the whole agriculture team at our foundation. And it left us thinking about whether parts of the Asian model can apply in Africa.”Making the Modern World: Materials and Dematerialization, by Vaclay SmilSmils books are a constant favorite of the Microsofts founderone of his books makes Gates list almost every year.“Making the Modern World” came out late in 2013 and explores the global use of materials, from silicon to wood and plastic.“If anyone tries to tell you were using fewer materials, send him this book. With his away from home every morning as I walked through the doors at the Embassy of Australia in Washington.Musical Aussie accents and Aboriginal art exhibits made me wonder if I had entered without a visa.In fact I was a temporary employee, a public affairs unpaid intern (实习生) for three months during the summer in order to engage myself in the culture of the country where I planned to study the next spring.During the summer I read the Australian news every day.Working at the embassy allowed me to escape the US.for six hours per day and learn about what was going on across the planet. After reading the daily Australian and US.news I usually helped prepare a PowerPoint presentation for school kids who visited the embassy as part of a school activity.Depending on whether an embassy event was going on, I would attend weekly meetings to listen to planning and see what I could do to help.Usually there were smaller tasks to be done such as creating visitors guides. The most fantastic event in which I participated was the visit of the Australian Prime Minister. As the only American among countless Australian media and staff, I felt comfortable and was kept busy taking pictures and recording doorstop interviews at famous sites such as the Capitol. As an intern, you will not be exposed to topsecret information, but you are on the inside when it comes to special events.Government work is a useful addition to ones experience. As an embassy employee you will gain invaluable knowledge while spending your summer in a culturally diverse workplace.【语篇解读】本文是一篇记叙文。讲述了作者为了要到澳大利亚学习提前在位于华盛顿的澳大利亚驻美国大使馆实习的经历。5What is the author talking about?AHer embassy internship.BHer trouble in finding a job.CHer foreign culture experience.DHer they talk about problems, see all the difficulties, find fault with and criticize other people and focus on all the things they would like but havent got.On the contrary, people blessed with a positive attitude think that anything is possible. They look for ways to solve the problems, they see the good in everybody, and they are grateful for all the good things in their lives.Whether suffering from or blessed with your attitude, this is not something that is put on us from the outside. We are very much responsible for our own attitude. We all start out with a “clean” board but this can get muddied by our experiences in life.As children we are made fun of and even get bullied (欺侮) and rejected, start to experience doubt and lose our selfconfidence. If this continues into adulthood, it can result in a bad attitude in later life.【语篇解读】本文展现出了积极的人生态度的重要性。13It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that people are likely to treat others Athe way they are treatedBbetter when they are satisfiedCworse when they are in troubleDthe way they consider appropriateA考查细节理解。根据第二段的整体内容尤其是“as people tend to respond with a similar attitude”可知,你以什么样的态度对待他人,他人也会用同样的方式对待你。14According to the writer, what affects peoples life attitude?AThe situation they face.BThe people around them.CTheir expectations of life.DThe way they view the world.D考查推理判断。根据第三段的整体内容并结合最后一段中的“We are very.We all start out with acleanboard but this can get muddied by our experiences in life”可知,人们看待世界的方式会左右他们对事物的态度,人们的人生经历对人生态度又有影响,故选D。15What is the purpose of the writer in writing this passage?ATo show how to avoid a negative attitude.BTo show the importance of a positive attitude.CTo share his positive attitude with his readers.DTo describe the effects of a negative attitude.B考查写作意图。根据第一段“Our success, satisfaction and general happiness in life is not dependent on what happens to us but how we deal with it.”并结合全文的内容可推知,作者写本文的目的在于表明积极的人生态度的重要性。.阅读七选五(2017深圳一模)Choosing the Right Path to Be a “Better” PersonLife is a constant exercise in selfimprovement. In the rush to achieve, the idea of being “better” can become lost sometimes. You may always wonder how to improve yourself and fulfill your dreams in an easier way. 1 Explore your talents.Everybody has some outstanding skills or interests. So its often necessary to be patient and try many things before you find one that suits you. 2 For example, people loving adventure may not be interested in the quiet chess club, but someone who enjoys other quiet activities might be.Determining who you enjoy being around may help you kno
