Unit 22 Environmental Protection (35分钟).阅读理解A(2017吉林长春二模)Food production does great harm to our environment. There are many procedures involved in the manufacture of food that result in greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Some procedures require the consumption of large amounts of fossil fuels, such as the transportation and storage of food products.Other factors that cause great damage to our environment include the overuse of fresh water. The production of beef is more damaging to the environment than that of any other food we consume as raising large numbers of cattle requires the production of large amounts of food for the animals. Its estimated that producing one pound of beef requires seven pounds of feed.Land use is also a problem. If the cattle are free-range cattle, large areas of land are required for them to live on.This has led to disastrous forest cutting and the loss of rare plants and animal species, particularly in tropical rain forests in Central and South America.Another problem specific to beef production is methane emissions(甲烷排放).Although many people are aware of the damaging effects of carbon dioxide, they dont realize methanes global warming potential is 25 times worse, making it a more dire problem.Unfortunately, beef consumption is growing rapidly. This is the result of simple supply and demand factors.Specifically, there are two main causes of demand that are encouraging the production of more supply.First, the increase in the world population means there are more people to consume meat. The second factor is socioeconomic advancement. As citizens in developing nations become financially stable, they can afford to buy more meat. Therefore, one way to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions is for people around the world to significantly cut down on the amount of beef they eat.1.Which of the following is TRUE?A.Raising free-range cattle is eco-friendly.B.People cut down trees for animal habitats.C.Producing beef can damage the environment.D.Carbon dioxide causes far more harm than methane.2.The underlined word “dire” in paragraph 4 means.A.urgentB.commonC.typical D.avoidable3.Beef production is growing rapidly because.A.more people are in demand of beefB.developing countries raise more cattleC.more land is available to raise cattleD.the cost of raising cattle is relatively low4.The author writes this article to.A.describe the booming of the beef productionB.emphasize the advantages of beef productionC.condemn the deforestation of the rain forestD.argue for a decrease in beef consumptionB(2017安徽蚌埠质检)With alarming regularity,we read about oil tankers(油轮)having accidents near land and the terrible consequences of the oil spills(泄露)on people, nature, and the environment.Millions of dollars have been used in developing special chemicals to help dismiss the spills and to clean up the animals, beaches, and land spoiled by the oil.Unfortunately, when many of these chemicals are used, more damage is caused to the environment, especially to lives in the sea.Of all of todays environmental disasters,an oil spill may actually be one of the least serious.Although oil is poisonous,it is a natural material. In the end,it breaks down naturally. There are,of course,long-term effects, but it is usually more serious in the short term.Nature by itself works better than chemical materials, but when there is a spill we demand that governments act immediately with as much hi-tech knowledge as possible. In 1967 the tanker Torrey Canyon sank off the Sicily Isles near the coast of England and spilled 120,000 tones of oil into the ocean. If you go there today, you will find it hard to see any sign that it ever happened.Governments seem to accept the risk of transporting millions of tons of oil by ship every day so that we can fill up our cars and drive around and cause even more environmental damage.Interestingly, the biggest companies in the world produce cars, and the next biggest supply the gasoline to make them run!We should be thinking more about reducing our dependency on oil.Governments should be encouraging research into new technologies, such as cars run by solar power, electricity, hydrogen, and so on.Much of this research has,in the past, been held back by the oil, gas, and coal.If the worlds millions of cars were 10% more efficientand the industry could easily produce cars at least twice as efficientwe would need many fewer tankers crossing the oceans each year.If this happened, the risks of oil spills would be reduced, and the air we breathe would be cleaner and fresher,too.5.What is the passage mainly talking about?A.Oil spills pollution.B.What oil pollution is.C.Oil tanker accidents.D.How to reduce oil pollution.6.How does the author support the idea that oil spills are not as serious as people believe?A.By having a discussion.B.By making an argument.C.By giving an example.D.By drawing a diagram.7.What does the underlined word “risk” in paragraph 5 refer to?A.Transportation depending more on oil.B.Poisonous oil breaking down naturally.C.Millions of tons of oil spilling into the sea.D.More environmental damage being caused.8.Which suggestion is made for reducing oil tank accidents according to the passage?A.We should build safer oil tankers in the near future.B.We should develop new technologies to cut oil use.C.Tankers should not be allowed to sail near the coastlines.D.Countries should build more oil pipelines under the sea. Camping without a campfire is damaging to the environment than that of any other food we consume.” 由第五段“This is the result of simple supply and demand factors.” 由文章最后一段,尤其是其中的“cut down on the amount of beef they eat”可知,本文写作目的是呼吁人们少吃牛肉,以减少对环境的破坏。
