Unit 17 Laughter李仕才 阅读理解AIts an annual argument. Do we or do we not go on holiday? My wife says no because we have no savings to save us. I say you only live once and we work hard and whats the point if you cant go on holiday. The joy of a recession (不景气) means no argument next year we just wont go.Since money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its knees, we should be grateful. For many families the recession means more than not booking a holiday. A YouGov survey of 2,000 people found 22% said they were arguing more with their partners because of concerns about money. A recent research shows arguments about money were especially damaging to couples.Kim Stephenson, an occupational psychologist, believes money may be different things to men and women. People can say the same things about money but have different ideas of what its for, he explains. Theyll say its to save, to spend, for security, for freedom, to show someone you love them. He says men are more likely to see money as a way of buying status and of showing their parents that theyve achieved something. The biggest problem is that couples assume each other know whats going on with their finances, but they dont. There seems to be more of a taboo (禁忌) about talking about money than about death. But you both need to know what youre doing, whos paying what into the joint account and how much you keep separately. In a healthy relationship, you dont have to agree about money, but you have to talk about it.1. What does the author say about going on holiday in Paragraph 1?A. It will cost them too much money.B. Few people can afford it without working hard.C. It makes all the hard work worthwhile.D. It is the chief cause of family quarrels.2. According to the text, what does Kim Stephenson believe?A. Money is often a symbol of a persons status.B. Money means a great deal to both men and women.C. Men and women spend money on different things.D. Men and women view money in different ways.3. The author suggests that couples should_.A. put their money together instead of keeping it separatelyB. discuss money matters to maintain a healthy relationshipC. make efforts to reach agreement on their family budgetsD. avoid arguing about money matters to remain romantic【文章大意】文章通过度假的问题引入话题,男人和女人对钱的看法是不一样的,夫妻应该就钱的问题多进行讨论,这样可以建立健康的关系。1. So instead of the traditional images of highpressure Asian schools, with rows of heads buried in books, they are trying different approaches to learning. To put this into practice, on a sunny April morning, 80 students from one of Singapores top schools were traveling outdoors. The nineto tenyearolds from Rosyth School were on a “learning journey” in a park, with science topics and values such as caring for the environment.“We are conducting a biopsy(活组织检查) to find out why a bee, a fish, a bird and a plant mysteriously died,”said student Darren Ong.“Is it because of human actions?”They photographed “evidence” on smartphones and digital cameras, getting facts on plant and animal species on their iPads.“In one activity, I can cover three topics,” said science teacher Lin Lixun. “They can really learn through handson experience and putting things into action,” said moral education teacher, Joslyn Huang.【解题导语】新加坡的学校向来以优异的考试成绩在国际上闻名。但是,如今新加坡的学校不再仅仅满足于考试成绩的领先,他们开始推行一种旨在培养学生创造力的“全面教育”。1According to the passage, what are Singapores schools famous for?ATest results.BStrict management.CTeaching quality.DThe learning environment.A解析:细节理解题。由第一段中的“Singapores schools have become globalrole models, with high results in international tests.”可知,新加坡的学校在国际考试中向来成绩优异,并因此成为全球学校学习的榜样,故A项正确。2What does Singapores “holistic education” lay emphasis on?AStudents moral behavior.BStudents content knowledge.CStudents creative ability.DStudents handson experience.C解析:细节理解题。结合第一段中的“encourages creativity”及第二段的“less about content knowledge.this challenge of innovating”可知,新加坡的“全面教育”强调的是对学生创造力的培养,故C项正确。3The 80 students from Rosyth School conducted a biopsy to find out _Ahow to improve the environmentBhow to protect animals and plantsCrelationships between human behavior and climate changeDrelationships between human actions and some animals deathD解析:细节理解题。由倒数第二段可知,这些学生进行活组织检查的目的是找出一些动植物的死因与人类活动之间的关系。4The author tells us about Singapores schools different ways of learning by _Agiving examplesBmaking contrastsClisting figuresDanalyzing cause and effectA解析:写作手法题。文章第三段提到,新加坡的学校打算尝试新的教学方式;接着第四、五段举了Rosyth School组织学生到户外学习的例子。由此可知,作者是通过举例的方式来说明新加坡在教育方面的新尝试的。CA recent survey in the United States showed that the average family spent more money on its pets than on its children. Although rather shocking, it should not surprise anyone who has seen the doggy parlours(客厅) where loved pets rest. Are Americans unique in treating their little friends in this way? No, the English, too, pay more attention to their pets. This can clearly be seen when we look at pet foods, which often contain more vitamins than human food. They certainly cost much. Last year the British public spent two hundred million pounds on pet food alone, to say nothing of veterinary bills or animal furniture. It is difficult not to feel angry about this when considering what the same amount could do for victims of starvation and poverty, so its not unusual for me to get hot under collar when I read an old man left all his money to his dog instead of his children. There are a variety of reasons why I find pets-raising alarming. They cause physical problems. An example of this is New York where they have great difficulty getting rid of the mess that dogs leave on the streets. Many people find this funny, but in a number of large cities it is a major problem. Animals can cause disease, too. It is the threat of babies a disease with no known cure.Another problem is the carelessness of pet owners. Most little children want a dog or a cat,and they continually push their mothers and fathers until they get one. It is only when the sweet little thing has been brought home that the parents realize how much time and money must be spent on Rover or Bonzo. Then they just abandon it. As a result, they are allowed to run free. English farmers lose hundreds of sheep a year, killed by someones pet and you must have read of children being hurt by some pets of their own.Lastly, I would only suggest that we have got our priorities wrong and that something should be done about it. In my view, its time we stopped being sentimental about pets. I can see no reason why we should get upset when animals are cut up for medical experiments. This will lead us to discovering cures for serious human diseases, then I say, keep cutting!1. The doggy parlours are mentioned in the 1st paragraph to show _. A. what costly lives the pets are livingB. where Americans keep their petsC. why children love their pets so muchD. how much pets depend on their masters2. If youre obese, blame your genes. 2 Yet, between 1980 and 2000, the number of Americans who are obese has doubled too quickly for genetic factors to be responsible. At restaurants, a dollar puts more calories on our plates than ever before, because restaurant meals usually have more calories than what we prepare at home, so people who eat out more frequently have higher rates of obesity than those who eat out less.2. If youre obese, you lack self-control.Research shows that if we are faced with too much information, we have a tendency to make poor choices on diet. 3 Even the most vigilant(警觉的) people may not be good controllers of themselves.3. 4 Although the US Department of Agriculture estimates that fewer than 5 percent of Americans live in the food deserts, about 65 percent of the nations population is obese. For most of us, obesity is not related to access to more fresh fruits and vegetables, but to the choices we make in supermarkets.4. The problem is not that we eat too much, but that we dont exercise.Michelle Obamas Le
