They contain the history of our race, the discoveries we have made, the accumulated knowledge and experience of ages; they picture for us the marvels and beauties of nature, help us in our difficulties, comfort us in sorrow and in suffering, change hours of weariness into moments of delight, store our minds with ideas, fill them with good and happy thoughts, and lift us out of and above ourselves. Many of those who have had, as we say, all that this world can give, have yet told us they owed much of their purest happiness to books. Macaulay had wealth and fame, rank and power, and yet he tells us in his biography that he owed the happiest hours of his life to books. He says, “If anyone would make me the greatest king that ever lived, with palaces and gardens and fine dinners, and wines and coaches, and beautiful clothes, and hundreds of servants, on condition that I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who did not love reading.” Precious and priceless are the blessings which the books scatter around our daily paths. We walk, in imagination, with the noblest spirits, through the most charming regions.Without stirring from our firesides we may wander to the most remote regions of the earth, or go up high into fields when Spenders shapes of unearthly beauty flock(人群) to meet us, where Miltons angels bell in our ears the choral hymns(赞美诗) of Paradise. Science, art, literature, philosophy, all that man has though, all that man has done, the experience that has been bought with the sufferings of a hundred generations, all are gathered up for us in the world of books. 1The books can help us to do a lot except _.Adiscovering the worldBmaking us happyCmaking us very richDaccumulating knowledge答案:C细节理解题。 2What does Macaulay want to be according to his biography?AA poor man.BA greatest king.CA wealthy man.DA man who loves reading. 3The author wants to encourage us to _.Abuy more booksBlove reading booksCvisit the worldDwrite the biography答案:B主旨大意题。 BRegarded as one of the English languages most gifted poets, John Keats wrote poetry that concentrated on imagery, human nature, and philosophy. Although Keats didnt receive much formal literary education, his own studies and passion brought him much success. Additionally, his own life situation influenced his poetry greatly.Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower middleclass family, the young John didnt attend a private school, but went to a public one. His teachers and his familys friends regarded him as an optimistic boy who favored playing and fighting much more than minding his studies. After his fathers death in the early 1800s, followed by his mothers passing due to tuberculosis(肺结核), he began viewing life differently. He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on.At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he too might become a doctor. However, his literary appetite had taken too much of his fancy, especially with his addiction to the poetry of Ehmund Spenser. He was able to have his first full poem published in the Examiner in 1816, entitled O Solitude! If I Must With Thee Dwell. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written an entire volume of poetry, but was sharply criticized by a magazine. However, the negative response didnt stop his pursuit of rhythm(韵律)John Keats next work was Endymion, which was published in May 1818. The story involves a shepherd who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him on an adventure of one boys hope to overcome the limitations of being human. Following Endymion, however, he tried something more narrativebased and wrote Isabella. During this time, John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry due to his own limit in life experiences. He would have to have the “knowledge” associated with his poems. His next work was Hyperion that would attempt to combine all that he learned. However, a bout (发作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and eventually take his life in 1821. 4John Keats attitude towards life changed because of _.Ahis early education from schoolBthe deaths of his parentsCEdmund Spensers poetryDthe criticism of a magazine答案:B细节理解题。由第二段中的倒数第二句“After his fathers death in the early 1800s, followed by his mothers passing due to tuberculosis(肺结核), he began viewing life differently.” 5What is the common thing between John Keats and his mother?AThey died of the same disease.BThey had a bad childhood.CThey read many books.DThey showed strong interest in poetry. 由第二段中的“followed by his mothers passing due to tuberculosis(肺结核)”和文章最后一句中的“a bout(发作)with tuberculosis.eventually take his life in 1821”可知,诗人与母亲死于相同疾病。 6While pursuing his dream of becoming a poet first, John Keats was _.AdeterminedBexperiencedCknowledgeableDimpatient答案:A推理判断题。从第三段最后一句“However, the negative response didnt stop his pursuit of rhythm.” 7What do we know from the passage?AKeats received little education at school.BKeats once had a chance of becoming a doctor.CIn 1816 Keats spent two months writing a poem.DEndymion was about a real love story. 由第三段第一句话中的“the teenage John Keats began studying under a surgeon”可知,诗人16岁时曾师从一位外科医生,surgeon“外科医生”。 批评;批判1get ones hands on sth. 短文改错(建议用时8)Early one morning in April, 2014, it was raining hardly.
