That might sound strange, but if youve been touched by flood, you know exactly what I mean. Californians know. Last winter, historic floods (after years of drought) damaged homes, roads, bridges and dams in the state. Flooding caused D|S62 billion in global economic losses in 2016. In my insurance work, I see flood negatively affect companies every day, putting them out of business. Even a few inches of floodwater can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage to a home or a business.Unfortunately, climate change, globalization and rapid urban development are only increasing flood risk. Our climate is warming and weather patterns are changing, causing strong storms that can bring floods. In the United States, wet areas of the country will likely become wetter and dry areas drier. As Californias experience suggests, rain may be less frequent but stronger.Businesses, especially, continue to expand their global footprints into new areas where little may be known about flood potential in those places. These areas often lack flood data that quickly and clearly describes the potential for flood risk at a potential building site.Growth and development in coastal or other lowlying areas can change the physical landscape, potentially creating new flood exposures. In the United States, half the population lives within 50 miles of the coast, and about 80 percent within 200 miles. The good news is that flood loss is largely preventable. Businesses need to take precautions (预防措施) when building in flood zones. Its troubling that, until very recently, there have remained plenty of areas in the world without reliable flood data. There have been satellites in the sky and smart phones in our pockets, but people have continued to build communities and businesses in flood zones without understanding the potential exposure. I believe that everyone will benefit from access (使用的机会) to new flood maps like the ones we just released. To avoid areas of floods when picking a location for your company, dont forget to refer to new flood maps.语篇解读:本文是说明文。洪水会造成严重的经济损失,公司在新的地方选址时需考虑是否会遭到洪水袭击。1What does the author mainly want to show in Paragraph 1?ANatural disasters are causing economic losses.BFloods are becoming more severe than before.CCalifornians suffer both droughts and floods.DFloods can be a really big problem.解析:选D段落大意题。第一段主要介绍洪水会给家庭和企业带来巨大的经济损失和不便。2Why does globalization increase flood risk?AI
