In order to drove the evil ghosts away, they lightened the fire and made candlesticks old and the house really deserted, it appears no one was living there, thus the evil ghosts would not come into the house. They also deliberately dressed very untidy looking very ugly, so the evil ghosts didnt want to be close to them. Futhermore, they also knew the evil ghosts are afraid of noise, so they put on grotesque clothes to the streets.
