had never imagined it to last more than 20 years. However, the tower has been beyond all expectations. While its structure is greatly admired today, such wasnt the case when the design was presented. Many artists thought the design was ugly, but Eiffel didnt change a thing. He believed that once it was ready, people would love the tower. He was true. The tower was an instant hit when it opened on March 31st,1889,two years after construction began.Over 30,000 people came to admire the new wonder and even tried to climb to the top.Though it was famous,French officials still considered taking it down.Fortunately,Eiffel stopped them by convincing(说服) them to use it for scientific experiments, and then a few years later, signals for television broadcasting.Over the years, the tower was also home to a newspaper office, post office, theater and even a lab for Gustave Eiffel.Today, the tower houses many restaurants on its first and second level. The third level has been a platform where visitors can see the entire city of Paris. While visitors can take the stairs to the first two levels, they must take the elevators to the platform, which are closely monitored. That hasnt stopped attempts by brave people to try to do various performances off the towerfrom bungee jumping to climbing it with their bare hands. To make sure the “Iron Lady” looks good, the tower is cleaned and repainted every eight years. Moreover, thanks to the fact that it was made of iron that expands in hot weather, the tower “grows” up to 6.75 inches taller every summer!21.The Eiffel Tower was built .A.in honour of a historical eventB.beyond all peoples expectationsC.after three years hard workD.with the purpose of amusing when it opened?A.It was highly thought of by many French artists.B.It remains the worlds tallest man-made structure.C.The government was planning to take the tower down.D.It attracted many people to visit it. 23.Gustave Eiffel convinced the officials not to tear the tower down by saying .A.it was a great symbol of FranceB.many other uses could be made of itC.it could help scientists do experiments successfullyD.the government could allow more people to visit it答案B解析细节理解题。 24.Why does the tower grow every summer?A.Because the tower is repainted every eight years.B.Because the iron expands when its heated in summer.C.Because the tower is being viewed from different directions.D.Because people try to do many performances off the tower. 由最后一段尤其是“.itwasmadeofironthatexpandsinhotweather,thetowergrowsupto6.75inchestallereverysummer!” B(文化意识、思维品质)If you walk slowly through downtown Helsinki during the day, taking in the splendid 19th century buildings, white boats and noise of passing trams(有轨电车),you will start to understand why it is called a city of two colours:white and blue. The sea is always present in Helsinki. When you take a walk over the great open space of the central square, you will hear seabirds screaming. When you take the tram, suddenly and unexpectedly, you are faced with a calm, shining blue sea.You may notice that people in Helsinki do not rush about as in other cities.Instead, they walk along the roads, politely letting other people by.A usual way to see Helsinki for the first time is to start out by the boats. You will walk by the elderly women selling fish and vegetables in the market square and find yourself in front of a beautiful park. You may enjoy a pleasant walk in the park for a few hours and then take the tram.Trams are the perfect way to get around in Helsinki.Watching the old houses, parks, theatres, churches, shops, restaurants and people in the streets, you may have a slightly sad film feeling to it.The pale summer nights are another wonder in the city.Following the waterfront of the city after sunset, you couldnt help stopping and listening to the sweet silence, interrupted only by the screaming seabirds and leaving fishing boats. However,in some way,Helsinki is also the most modern city in northern Europe. You will surely want to visit the white Glass Palace, the modern art museum, and all those extremely popular cafes and design stores.25.Helsinki is called a city of two colours mainly because of the colours of its .A.old buildings, boats and parksB.old buildings, boats and seabirdsC.old houses, parks and tramsD.old buildings, boats and the sea答案D解析细节理解题。 26.The best way to see most of Helsinki is to go .A.by boatB.by busC.by tramD.on foot答案C解析细节理解题。 27.The 19th century buildings, the white Glass Palace, popular cafes and design shops artist,Maveleone(1669-1740).When it was sold recently in New York for $27,000,the seller,Mr Oliver Pitt, was asked to explain how the picture had come into his possession.Pitt said,“I didnt know it was so valuable.Im not an art expert.Photography is my hobby.I bought Fisherman in Italy in 1970 for $140.The picture was dirty, and I couldnt see the artists signature. But anyway it wasnt the picture that I liked.I bought it because of the frame.”“Its a most unusual frame, made of tiny, silvery sea-shells.They are set in such a way that they reflect perfect light onto the surface of a picture.I now have a photograph of my wife in that frame, and Ill never part with it.”“When I returned to New York I showed the painting in its frame to a customs officer.I told him that I had paid $140 for it but admitted I didnt know its actual worth. The customs man valued it at $140,and I was asked to pay duty on that value.I did so,there and then.”“Later,I took off the frame, and that uncovered Maveleones signature. My wife suggested in fun that the painting might be a valuable one,so I cleaned it and put it up for sale.”As a result of this explanation,Oliver Pitt had to appear in court. He was accused of knowingly making a false statement of the value of a picture so as to cheat the Customs Department.Pitt was not happy.“I told the truth as I knew it then,”he said.“What else could I say?”And then the judge agreed with him.“The Customs Department is to be responsible,”he said,“for making a true valuation of goods brought into the country,so that the correct amount of duty may be charged.Mr Pitt did not cause or try to cause the mistake that was made.He paid the duty that was demanded. If,now, the Customs Department finds that its valuation was not correct,it cannot be allowed to have another try.Pitt is not guilty.”29.When Oliver Pitt bought the picture,.A.it was unframedB.Maveleone signed the dealC.he suggested that it was valuableD.it was the frame that attracted him答案D解析细节理解题。 Iboughtitbecauseoftheframe.” 30.We can infer that if Maveleone had been a well-known artist,.A.the painting would have cost much more than $140B.he wouldnt have sold his paintingC.the customs officer wouldnt have been cheatedD.Pitt wouldnt have had the intention to buy any of his paintings答案A解析推理判断题。 31.Pitt took off the frame probably in order to .A.clean the painting to put it up for saleB.look for the artists signatureC.use it for his wifes photographD.find the paintings true value答案C解析细节理解题。 32.What can be concluded from the passage?A.Pitt was asked to pay the correct amount of duty.B.Pitt sold the frame of the painting at an even higher price.C.The Customs Department had no right to revalue the painting.D.Pitts wife was regarded as an expert because of her wise suggestion. 由最后一段中的“If,now,theCustomsDepartmentfindsthatitsvaluationwasnotcorrect,itcannotbeallowedtohaveanothertry.Pittisnotguilty.” D(文化意识、思维品质)Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city?In order to answer this question,we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasonsfor example, economic(经济的) reasonswhy they should be preserved. So,let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed? In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style.Indeed, there are many examples in my own home town of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响) its surroundings too much,it often improves the attractiveness of the area.It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(破坏) the area they are in,but the same can be said of some old buildings too.Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas.I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative(保守的) and do not like change.Although we have to respect peoples feelings as fellow users of the buildings,I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before,we would all still be living in caves. Thus,I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.33.What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph?A.Some of them are not attractive.B.Most of them are too expensive to preserve.C.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.D.They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area. 故选A项。34.Which of the following is true according to the author?A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.B.Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.C.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.D.No one understands why people speak against new buildings. 35.By “move things forward” in the last paragraph, the author probably means “”.A.destroy old buildingsB.put things in a different placeC.choose new architectural stylesD.respect peoples feelings for historical buildings答案C解析细节理解题。 Many people think of guys as being
