It was set up in Kalangala about two years ago. Unlike government schools, which have very large classes of 90 children, many of whom do not want to learn, Bridge has small classes, so pupils get a great deal of attention. Small classes are good for teaching, but the school is always having difficulty with money since private schools are dependent on parents paying on time. The school has five primary classes and three nursery classes. As the children progress through the school they will add another class next year. The total number of children in the primary classes is about 50. The classrooms have no windows or doors. But it is very formal and insists on children wearing uniforms(制服). Discipline is strict and the children are well-behaved. Only English can be spoken and not the local language. Although English is the national language and the language of education, government schools teach in their own language for the first three years.School starts at 7 a.m. and the children have to be on time. But the donator who started sending envelopes with cash to deserving causes, accompanied by an article from the local paper, has made a northern German city believe in fairytales (童话).The first envelope was sent to a victim support group. It contained 10,000 with a cutting from the Braunschiveiger Zeitung about how the group supported a woman who was robbed of her handbag; similar plain white anonymous envelopes, each containing 10,000, then arrived at a kindergarten and a church. The envelopes keep coming, and so far at least 190,000 has been distributed. Last month, one of them was sent to the newspapers own office. It came after a story it published about Tom, a 14-year-old boy who was severely disabled in a swimming accident. The receptionist at the Braunschiveiger Zeitung opened an anonymous white envelope to find 20 notes of 500 inside with a copy of the article. The name of the family was underlined.“I was driving when I heard the news, Claudia Neumann, the boys mother, told Der Spiegel magazine. “I had to park on the side of the road; I was speechless. The money will be used to make the entrance to their house wheelchair-accessible and for a course of treatment that their insurance company refused to pay for.For someone to act so selflessly, for this to happen in such a society in which everyone thinks of himself, was astonishing, Mrs. Neumann said. Her family wonder whether the donator is a Robin Hood character, taking from banks to give to the needy.Henning Noske, the editor of the Braunschiveiger Zeitung, said: Maybe it is an old person who is about to die. We just do not know. However, he has told his reporters not to look for the citys hero; for fear that discovery may stop the donations.28. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Money Is Raised by the Newspaper. B. Newspaper Distributes Money to the Needy. C. Unknown Hero Spreads Love in EnvelopesD. Robin Hood Returns to the City D “Long time no see” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friends email, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation of the Chinese greetings with a ruled English grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words could not convince me at all. So I did a research on . To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” This sentence has been widely used in emails, letters, newspapers, movies, books, or any other possible places. Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Ironically, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chans movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a world wide famous Chinese detective named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan likes to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. “Long time no see” was his trademark. Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see” became a popular phrase in the real world with thanks to the popularity of these movies. Some scholars refer to America as a huge pot of stew. All kinds of culture are mixed in the stew together, and they change the color and taste of each other. American Chinese, though a minority ethnic(少数民族的成员) group in the United States, is also contributing some changes to the stew! Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed stew. You can have some other examples than adoptions(采用)from Chinese, such as pizza from Italian, susi from Japanese, and dj vu from French etc. There is a long list! Americans do not just simply borrow something from others. They will modify it and make it their own, so you would not be surprised to find a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant, or to buy a bottle of iced Chinese green tea with honey in a grocery store. Since Americans appreciate Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way the American stew keeps adding richness and flavor.32. The writer himself felt surprised at _.A. the Chinglish expression “Long time no see”B. so many literal translation of the expressions used in AmericaC. “Long time no see” used as standard American EnglishD. finding out Americans use the expression every day33. According to the passage, it can be inferred that _.A. detectives translate the phrase “Long time no see”B. cultures can be changed in the huge pot of stewC. the huge pot of stew greatly affects all kinds of languagesD. Hollywood made “Long time no see” popular35. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?A. Informal language sometimes doesnt go with grammar and structure.B. “Long time no see” has been used daily in America.C. Languages are always ruled by grammar and structure.D.
