Canada,Week 5,What We Will Cover,The Land The People Canadian Economy Government System History At a Glance,The Land Provincial Canada,The Land A Few notes,Canada is the second largest country in the world. (Over 10 million square kilometers.) Canada is in the north of North America, just bordering the United States. Most of Canada is VERY thinly populated, with only 3 people per square kilometer. The largest Island in Canada is Baffin Island. Baffin Island is more than double the size of the UK. Canada has one of the lowest population densities on earth, and some of many of the largest natural parks in the world. Canada can be divided in to three regions, the Eastern Maritime Provinces, the St. Lawrence Plains, and Western Canada. Canada has 1.5 million lakes! The country is known for its many beautiful bodies of water and has many of the largest natural parks in the world. Canada is COLD! Except for a few select places, winters are very uncomfortable and most of the population lives in the south because of it.,The Land Where Is Canada?,The Land Canadian Population,Northern Canada is very cold, with a climate that is not very suitable for comfortable living. In some places, winter will last all year long. That is why nearly 90% of Canadians live in the southern provinces. The land in the north does have very good natural resources, and most of Canadas wealth still comes from those provinces. Canada has officially given most of Nunavut (the furthest north province) to the native Canadians as reservation land. Although traditionally theirs, many native Canadians feel this unfair as the land is mostly rocks and ice.,The Land Canadian Provinces and Population,The People Quality of Life,Recently, Canada has climbed to being the most comfortable place to live on earth! According to studies and research, Vancouver in British Columbia has take the title of best city to live in. There are several reasons for this include : Extremely good economy. The unemployment rate is very low, and the salary versus living expenses is one of the best in the world. Beautiful environment. It is CLEAN. Pollution is very scarce. Very high life expectancy, with men being at 77 years old and women being 84. Tiny population but extremely modern city life, rivalling Shanghai and New York City in attractions and entertainment.,Some Historical Facts The Beginning.,In the early 1500s the Spanish, French, British and Italians were all try to get to North America. The French explorers and missionaries got to Canada first. Jacques Cartier landed at the gulf of the St Lawrence waterway and this led to the founding of New France.,Some Historical Facts Interesting Fact,Canada got its name from the explorer Cartier, who noticed the Huron and Iroquois native people referring to the land as Kanata which means, cluster of small community. He misheard Kanata and pronounced it Canada when telling others about his discovery.,Some Historical Facts England Takes Over,France wasnt all that interested in its new colony, and mostly ignored Canada. The Hudsons Bay Company was founded in 1670, primarily as a fur trading enterprise (Fur was the only real thing Europe was interested in about Canada, and this company still exists today as the major department store chain in this country). Canada is known as a peace-loving country, but its beginnings are, like most nations, bloody. England officially declared war on France in 1756, starting in Europe what is known as the Seven Years War. In 1763, France surrendered and gave Canada to England.,Some Historical Facts The U.S. Looks Stupid,The War of 1812 is often thought to have brought about the beginnings of Canadas national identity. The Americans invaded Canada believing it would be an easy victory. The British, Native peoples and French banded together and, although outnumbered, and pushed the young U.S. back! In August 1814, the British captured and burned Washington, including the White House (which in those days wasnt white and had to be painted white to cover the damage). The war ended in a draw in December 1814 with the Treaty of Ghent.,Some Historical Facts A New Country Is Formed,In 1867 the Dominion of Canada was created under the British North America Act(BNA Act) passed by the British government. Sir John A. Macdonald became the first Prime Minister of the Dominion that included Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Within the next six years Manitoba, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island were admitted into the Dominion.,Some Historical Facts Interesting Fact,When the Queen of England is physically in Canada, she officially becomes the Queen of Canada. When the Queen is in England, Canada is considered a Dominion, partially controlled by the Queen but otherwise a country of itself and equal to England under the Statute of Westminster in 1931. It all depends where the Queen is.,The People Canadian Culture Facts,Canadians are proud of their culture and try to protect it. The government actually has laws that force Canadian music and movies to be played everywhere! Canada has two cultures, one similar to Britain-America and one similar to France! While the British-American part is the majority, Montreal is mainly French. Canada has two official languages, English and French. Canadian people are known for their wonderful sense of humor, and their many famous comedy actors. Canadians are polite, clean, and generally friendly people. Canadian food ranges to three main parts. French-Canadian, British, and Chinese-Canadian. The national sport is hockey.,The People 7 Dimensions of Culture,The People Two Cultures,The People Media and Music,Canadian movies, TV, and music have become rather popular in the USA and abroad recently. Famous Canadian actors include Jim Carey, Michael Myers, and Keanu Reeves. All three actors specialized in comedy, and claim to owe it to the Canadian sense of humor. Famous Canadian musicians include Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne, and Nelly Furtado. Canadian music is quite original and very rarely incorporates political meaning in to it. Specializing in alternative music, they stick to more personal topics.,Economy and Government Economy,The Natural Resources From Canada are : WaterWater Water MineralsFurs-Wood Much of the drinking water in the USA comes from Canada! Also, Canada specializes in hydro-electrical power. Remember, Canada has 1.5 million lakes. Canadas most important industries are :,The Economy Uneven Wealth Distributions,Canadas wealth is not evenly distributed throughout the whole country. For example, Ontario and Quebec are manufacturing centers of Canada. Because of this, there are many jobs and easy access to anything you could want. On the other hand, the Prairie Provinces rely on industry. That means these places are generally less clean and less wealthy. Since goods are not manufactured there, some things a
