contents, reading skills, introduction, like the other skills for your use, the skill introduced in this unit does render you better able in reading.,practice, this practice is designed to help you get a deeper insight into the skill special for this unit.,introduction:,阅读实践,随 笔,skimming,we learned the reading skill of skimming in unit 7, book 2. whenever we have to find some specific facts in a passage, we look quickly at the sentences that offer the needed information. rapid reading for facts is called skimming. when we skim a paragraph or a page, we are searching quickly among sentences for the answers to the questions we have. unlike scanning which involves searching for details or isolated facts (see unit 6, book 2), skimming requires the reader to note only information and clues which, introduction:,阅读实践,随 笔,provide an idea of the central theme or topic of a piece of writing. when we skim, we probably have to move our eyes faster than when we scan although the same steps of reading are involved. of course, the key step is to decide what information we want to know, and then try to skim for it. when we skim, we read only selected sentences in order to get the main idea. we should also use clues such as italicized or underlined words, headlines or subtitles, spacing, paragraphing, etc. do not read every word or sentence.,skimming, introduction:,阅读实践,随 笔,here are some hints for skimming: * make sure that we know what information we are looking for. that is to say, we are reading something with some questions in mind. * move our eyes quickly from line to line and from sentence to sentence, paying particular attention to numbers, paragraph markers, italicized words, capital letters, subtitles, etc. while having questions in mind. * when we have found what we need, think about the questions to see whether the information answers them. * take down the answers to the questions in our minds.,skimming, introduction:,阅读实践,随 笔,here are some examples taken from text a,skimming, example i: what is the name of the new book written by daniel goleman?,key. emotional intelligence.,notes. what we have to do is to search quickly or to skim for the namedaniel goleman and then we find the italicized wordsemotional intelligence, the name of the book.,introduction:,阅读实践,随 笔,skimming, example ii: skim paragraph 4 to find out how many adaptive skills are mentioned by the author.,key. four.,notes. all we need to do is to search quickly for italicized words, which stand out from others as a list of points.,introduction:,阅读实践,随 笔,skimming, example iii: skim the whole passage to find out the four adaptive skills suggested by the author.,key. raising consciousness, using imagery, considering and reconsidering events to choose the most creative response to them, and integrating the perspectives of others.,practice,阅读技巧,随 笔,directions: skim the related paragraphs in text b for answers to the following questions quickly as you can without reading the whole passage.,practice,阅读技巧,随 笔,1. skim the first three paragraphs to find: what is the finding of the experiment concerning watching four-year-olds interact with a piece of candy?,key: those four-year-olds who had enough self-control to hold out for the second piece of candy generally grew up to be better adjusted, more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable teenagers.,practice,阅读技巧,随 笔,2. skim paragraph 4 to find: what is the master skill attached to high achievers?,key: the ability to delay reward.,practice,阅读技巧,随 笔,3. skim paragraph 6 to find: what is the theory proposed in emotional intelligence by daniel goleman?,key: when it comes to predicting peoples success, brain capacity as measured by iq may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought of as “character”.,practice,阅读技巧,随 笔,4. skim paragraph 9 to find: how much does iq count for success?,key: about 20%.,text study, new words,课文阅读,随 笔,阅读理解,问题预览,new words,课文阅读,随 笔,阅读理解,问题预览,questions previewing,词汇学习,课文阅读,随 笔,阅读理解,for you to be better conditioned for reading as fast as 100 words per minute, as required in the new type of examination “fast reading”, text b can serve to be your fast-reading material. but, for this purpose, the best course of action is to know what to scan for in your skimming. thus, the trick is to keep in your mind the key words of each question before you start off. that is where the “question previewing” comes in.,questions previewing,词汇学习,课文阅读,随 笔,阅读理解,directions: choose the best answer to each of the following questions.,1. scientists can predict a four-year-old kids future by _. 2. in the experiment, some kids do all kinds of things like covering their eyes and singing to themselves in order to _. 3. the experiment with the four-year-olds shows that _. 4. the phrase “emotional intelligence” was created _.,questions previewing,词汇学习,课文阅读,随 笔,阅读理解,5. according to daniel goleman, when we predict a persons success, _. 6. which of the following statements is true of eq and iq according to the text? 7. in regard to the factors of success, researchers agree that _. 8. we can infer from the text that _.,passage reading,词汇学习,问题预览,随 笔,阅读理解,eq plays a role in personal success, chinese, para. 1 it turns out that a scientist can see the future by watching four-year-olds interact with a piece of candy. the researcher invites the children, one by one, into a plain room and begins the gentle torture. “you can have this piece of candy right now,” he says. “but if you wait while i leave the room for a while, you can have two pieces of candy when i get back.” and then he leaves.,question 1,passage reading,词汇学习,问题预览,随 笔,阅读理解,chinese, para. 2 some children grab for the treat the minute hes out the door. some last a few minutes before they give in. but others are determined to wait. they cover their eyes; they put their heads down; they sing to themselves; they try to play games or even fall asleep. when the researcher returns, he gives these children their hard-earned pieces of candy. and then, science waits for them to grow up.,question 2,词汇学习,问题预览,随 笔,阅读理解,chinese, para. 3 by the time the children reach high school, something remarkable has happened. a survey of the childrens parents and teachers found that those who as four-year-olds had enough self-control to hold out for the second piece of candy generally grew up to be better adjusted, more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable teenagers. the children who gave in to temptation early on were more likely to be lonely, easily frustrated and inflexible. they could not endure stress and shied away from challenges.,passage reading, question 3,passage reading,词汇学习,问题预览,随 笔,阅读理解,chinese, para. 4 when we think of brilliance we see einstein, a thinking machine with skin and mismatched socks. high achievers, we imagine, were wired for greatness from birth. but then you have to wonder why, over time, natural talent seems to waken in some people and dim in others. this is where the candy comes in. it seems that the ability to delay reward is a master skill, a triumph of the logical brain over the irresponsible one. it is a sign, in short, of emotional intelligence. and it doesnt show up on an iq test.,passage reading,词汇学习,问题预览,随 笔,阅读理解,chinese, para. 5a for most of this century, scientists have worshipped the hardware of the brain and the software of the mind; the messy powers of the heart were left to the poets. but brain theory could simply not explain the questions we wonder about most:,passage reading,词汇学习,问题预览,随 笔,阅读理解,chinese, para. 5b why some people just seem to have a gift for living well; why the smartest kid in the class will probably not end up the richest; why we like some people virtually on sight and distrust others; why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would sink a less resistant soul. what qualities of the mind or spirit, in short, determine who succeeds?,passage reading,词汇学习,问题预览,随 笔,阅读理解,chinese, para. 6a the phrase “emotional intelligence” was coined by researchers five years ago to describe qualities like understanding ones own feelings, sympathy for the feelings of others and “the regulation of emotion in a way that enhances living”. this notion is about to bound into the national conversation, conveniently shortened to eq, thanks to a new book, emotional intelligence by daniel goleman.,question 4,passage reading,词汇学习,问题预览,随 笔,阅读理解,chinese, para. 6b goleman has brought together a decades worth of research into how the mind processes feelings. his goal, he announces on the cover, is to redefine what it means to be smart. his theory: when it comes to predicting peoples success, brain capacity as measured by iq may actually matter less than the qualities of the mind once thought of as “character”.,question 5,passage reading,词汇学习,问题预览,随 笔,阅读理解,chinese, para. 7 at first glance, there would seem to be little thats new here. there may be no less original idea than the notion that our hearts have authority over our heads. “i was so angry,” we say, “i couldnt think straight.” neither is it surprising that “people skills” are useful, which amounts to saying its good to be nice. but if it were that simple, the book would not be quite so interesting or its implications so controversial.,passage reading,词汇学习,问题预览,随 笔,阅读理解,chinese, para. 8a this is no abstract investigation. goleman is looking for methods to restore “politeness to our streets and caring in our community life”. he sees practical applications everywhere for how companies should decide whom to hire, how couples can increase the odds that their marriages will last, how parents should raise their children and how schools should teach them.,passage reading,词汇学习,问题预览,随 笔,阅读理解,chinese, para. 8b when street gangs substitute for families and schoolyard insults end in knife attacks, when more than half of marriages end in divorce, when the majority of the children murdered in this country are killed by their parents, many of whom say they were trying to discipline the child for behavior like blocking the tv or crying too much, it suggests a demand for basic emotional education.,passage reading,词汇学习,问题预览,随 笔,阅读理解,chinese, para. 9a and it is here the arguments will break out. while many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues finally taken seriously, they fear that a notion as handy as eq invites misuse. “people have a variety of emotion,” argues harvard psychology professor jerome kagan. “some people handle anger well but cant handle fear. some people cant take joy. so each emotion has to be viewed differently.”,question 8,passage reading,词汇学习,问题预览,随 笔,阅读理解,chinese, para. 9b eq is not the opposite of iq. some people are blessed with a lot of both, but some with little of either. what researchers have been trying to understand is how they work together; how ones ability to handle stress, for instance, affects the ability to concentrate and put intelligence to use. among the ingredients for success, researchers now generally agree that iq counts for about 20%; the rest depends on everything from social class to luck.,question 6,question 7,reading comprehension,词汇学习,问题预览,随 笔,课文阅读,directions: choose the best answer to each of the following questions.,1. scientists can predict
