Thats all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin. Al Herpin, it was said, never slept. Could this be true? The doctors decided to see the strange man themselves. Al Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw him sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one. The only rest Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They asked him many questions, hoping to find an answer. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his mothers having been injured several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason? Nobody was sure. Herpin died at the age of 94. 31. The main idea of this passage is that . A. large numbers of people do not need sleep B. a person was found who actually didnt need any sleep C. everyone needs some sleep to stay alive D. people can live longer by trying not to sleep 32. The doctor came to visit Herpin, expecting . A. to cure him of his sleeplessness B. to find that his sleeplessness was not really true C. to find out why some old people didnt need any sleep D. to find a way to free people from the need of sleeping 33. One reason that might explain Herpins sleeplessness was . A. his mothers injury before he was born B. that he had gradually got rid of the sleeping habit C. that he hadnt got a bed D. his magnificent physical condition 34. Herpins condition could be regarded as . A. a common one B. curable C. very healthy D. a rare one Passage B On April 26, 1986, I was five years old. I cant remember this day very well, but it turned out to be a disaster not only for our family, but also for thousands of people from many countries. It was a really nice, warm and sunny day. I was outside with my elder brother and my little 13-day-old sister, who was sleeping in a pram under a tree. Suddenly dark clouds appeared in the sky and a strong wind started to blow. Our mum told us to come into the house. While we were gathering our toys, she was trying to take the pram. The first drop of “rain” fell on my sister. It was only later that we found out the rain was radioactive water. At first we were not told anything about the accident. The government “didnt want people to panic.” But they were afraid that the second reactor(反 应堆) would blow up. Trains were made ready to send people away from our city. Since then the word “radiation” has come into and changed our life. Chernobyl deprived(剥夺) me of many joys of my childhood. Life went on as usual. I grew up and went to school. I studied very well. In 1998, I graduated from high school with honors and dreamed of entering a university. And here again Chernobyl interfered. I was diagnosed with a brain tumor(脑瘤). My parents came back from Minsk, where my sister had just undergone a brain tumor operation. I didnt know how to tell mum that we had to go back to Minsk again for another operation straight after my sisters. This was how Chernobyl poisoned my youth. 35. People didnt know the accident of Chernobyl at first, because . A. the government wanted to keep it secret B. the weather was too bad C. the train took them away D. nobody knew the truth 36. Who got the same terrible illness as I did after the accident? A. My elder brother. B. My little sister. C. My mother. D. My father. 37. What does “blow up” in the fourth paragraph mean? A. Fly. B. Close. C. Explode. D. Move. 38. Why did the parents have to go back to Minsk again? A. Because my sister would have another operation. B. Because I would have an operation. C. Because Minsk was far from danger. D. Because I entered a university there. Passage C On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was planning to take the bus home from work as usual. She had just finished working as a seamstress(女裁缝) at a department store and then walked to the bus stop. As she first boarded the bus, she noticed that the driver was the same man who had sent her off his bus years earlier because she would not go around to the back door after she was already on the bus. She decided to get on anyway and sit down, but she did not sit at the very front of the bus. She took a seat next to a black man in the first row that “colored” people were allowed to sit in. At the next stop, some white people got on the bus. After they filled up the white seats, one man was left standing. When the driver noticed him standing, he told Rosa and the others in her row to let the man have a seat. Three people stood up, but the driver saw that Rosa was still sitting there. He asked if she would stand up, and she refused. Then he told her he would have her arrested, and Rosa told him he could do that. A few minutes later, two policemen got on the bus. When the driver told them that Rosa would not stand up, the policemen walked over to her and asked her why she wouldnt get up. Rosa said she didnt think she should stand up and asked, “Why do you push us around?” One policeman answered,“I dont know, but the law is the law, and you are under arrest.”As soon as he said that, Rosa stood up. Then one of the policemen picked up her purse while the other picked up her shopping bag, and the three left the bus. Finally, they took Rosa to the police station in the car. Rosas action that day started a citywide boycott(联合抵制) of the bus system by Blacks that lasted more than a year. This later resulted in the decision against segregation on city buses in the US. 39. The driver told Rosa that he would have her arrested because . A. she refused to give her seat to a white man B. she was sitting in the row for white people C. she was not allowed to have a seat on the bus D. she was black 40. Where was Rosa Parks taken finally? A. The bus stop. B. The police station. C. The department store. D. The next bus. 第卷 (共45分) 四、英汉互译(15*2=30分) 41. The people boating on the lake seem to have forgotten the time. 42.
