A US company is trying to help.Using a tiny microchip which is implanted into the arm, they have come up with a replacement for cash or credit cards that cannot be left at home or dropped on the bus.The Verichip is about the size of a grain of rice and works using radio frequency identification technology. At a shop, a radio frequency “reader” would send a signal and the chip in your arm would respond with your unique identity number. That would give the “reader” your financial information, and money could be taken directly from your accounts and you wouldnt even have to reach for your wallet. The company also hopes to include other information on the chip, such as medical records, building security codes(密码) and passwords, making life even easier. But not everyone is happy with the developments. Critics say that a lot can go wrong with the chip. A clever thief could build a fake(假的) reader that would steal your information without you knowing. So your money could still be stolen. Privacy is a big issue too. Stores, or even the government, only need to track the chip to find out what you buy, how much you spend and where you go.And if you wanted to get rid of your chip, you would need an operation to remove it.41. But, it is often the belief of others that gives us the courage to try.J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter book series, began writing at age 6. In her biography, she remembers with great fondness when her good friend, Sean, whom she met in secondary school, became the first person to encourage her and help build the confidence that one day she would be a very good writer.“He was the first person with whom I really discussed my serious ambition to be a writer. He was also the only person who thought I was bound to be a success at it, which meant much more to me than I ever told him at the time.”Despite many setbacks Rowling persevered in her writing, particularly fantasy stories. But it wasnt until l990 that she first conceived the idea about Harry Potter. As she recalls, it was on a long train journey from London to Manchester that “the idea of Harry Potter simply fell into my head. To my immense frustration(沮丧), I didnt have a functioning pen with me, and I was too shy to ask anybody if I could borrow one. I think, now, that this was probably a good thing, because I simply sat and thought, for four(delayed train) hours, and all the details bubbled up in my brain, and this scrawny, black-haired, bespectacled boy who didnt know he was a wizard became more and more real to me.”That same year, her mother passed away after a ten-year battle with multiple sclerosis, which deeply affected her writing. She went on to marry and had a daughter, but separated frm her husband shortly afterwards.During this time, Rowling was diagnosed with clinical depression. Unemployed, she completed her first novel in area cafes, where she could get her daughter to fall asleep. After being rejected by l2 publishing houses, the first Harry Potter novel was sold to a small British publishing house. Now with seven books that have sold nearly 400 million copies in 64 languages, J. I remember my Mom worrying about me getting sick from the heat in the summer, because I wore a thickblue sweater all the time. No respectable cowboy, however, would wear short sleeves so I sweated while I played. One day my parents gave me a bb gun. It lookedjust like a gun that all the cowboys used in the movies. I spent hours each day during those summer months shooting at stumps andpretending to be John Wayne (film actor who played tough heroes). As I was coming into the house one afternoon, though, I tried it one time too many. The gun that I thought was empty let out a soft pop and a bullet flew across the room and parted the hair of my Dad who was asleep on the couch. My Dad took one look at the bb hole a half inch above his head, walked over to me, took my gun, walked outside, and calmly broke it in half.I didnt cry too much over this. I knew how close I had come to hurting my Dad with my stupidity. I didnt expect to ever get another bb gun either. That is why I was so surprised when my Dad bought me another one the next year. I guess he thought I had wised up enough to know how to use it this time. I never put a single bb in the new gun, but in my imagination JohnWayne rode again.I eventually outgrew my cowboy stage, but I never did outgrow myappreciation for my Fathers forgiveness. He showed me that even when Imessed up in the worse way I was still loved. He gave me another chanceand let me know that I was forgiven whether I deserved it or not. Heshared with me some of the unconditional love and forgiveness. May we always embrace and share that love and forgiveness as well.51. The Mistake of a Naughty BoyDGlobal Positioning Systems(全球定位系统) are now a part of everyday driving in many countries. These satellite-based systems provide turn-by-turn directions to help people get to where they want to go. However, they can also cause a lot of problems, send you to the wrong place or leave you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown, it is a combination of the two.Barry Brown is with the Mobile Life Centre in Stockholm, Sweden. He told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPS-equipped car to use during his stay. Mr. Brown says, “They just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination. And, then it wasnt until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they actually put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the GPS is kind of garbage in garbage out.”Mr. Brown says this is a common human error, but what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the shortcomings, or failures, of GPS equipment. He says, “One problem with a lot of the GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that its going to the wrong place.”Mr. Brown says, “One of the things that struck us, perhaps the most important thing was that you have to know what youre doing when you use a GPS. There are these new skills that people have developed. There are these new competencies(资格) that you need to have to be able to use a GPS because they sometimes go wrong. This goes against a common belief that GPS systems are for passive drivers who lack navigational skills.”Barry Brown says to make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together.56、According to Barry Brow ,in most cases, are blame for the problemsA、human errorsB、GPS errorsC、errors caused by both drivers and GPSD、errors caused by putting in a wrong address57、The example of Barry Browns friend is used to show that A、GPS is nothing but garbageB、GPS is still not accurate enoughC、it is difficult for drivers to use GPS equipmentD、sometimes drivers are responsible for the problem58、It can be inferred from the second paragraph that A、Its impossible to drive from the east to the west in the USB、Barry Browns friend went to Stockholm, Sweden by planeC、Given wrong instructions ,the GPS will produce wrong rexsultsD、GPS systems are for passive drivers who lack navigational skills59、Which of the followings is one of the shortcomings of GPS equipmef?A、It just tells the driver to turn once at a timeB、It gives the driver the overviewC、Its screen is too small to be seen clearlyD、It is only suitable for passive drivers60、Whats the main idea of the text?A、GPS systems are helpful for driversB、Driving with GPS can be difficult to navigate(导航)C、Drivers should understand how GPS systems workD、Drivers should learn to use GPS systems correctlyEDepression(抑郁症)is a serious problem today . Depression causes workers to be unproductive, causing companies and countries to lose billions of dollars. One expert says that depression is like cancer because it is “widespread, costly and deadly”. Depression hits one person in five
