IhaveknownHongbinformorethanoneandahalfyears.IhiredhimtoworkformeasaResearchAnalystatSRRinJulyof1996.SRRisafull-servicemarketingresearchfirmwhoseclientsareprimarilylargeradiostatioandothermusicorientedmediapaniessuchasCapitalRecords,andMTVNetworks.MyrolesatSRRincludemanagerofnewproductdevelopment(researchproductsandthesoftwaretoanalyzetheresults),andinternalresearchcoultant(samplingmethodologyandmultivariatestatisticalanalysis).Inaddition,asamemberofthemanagementteamatSRR,Iamchargedwithcotantlyworkingtofindmoreefficient,cost-effectivemeaofgatheringreondentleveldataandproducingourresearchproducts.SincejoiningSRRasaSeniorResearchAnalyst,andmorerecentlyasManagerofResearchandDevelopment,Hongbinhasbeenamajorweaponinmyarsenaloftoolsforaomplishingthesetasks.Hongbinisacreativeandoriginalthinker.Hehasnativeintelligence,greatcuriosityaboutpeopleandideas,andplentyofmonseethathehasaliedtosolvingmanyproblemsatSRR.Inaddition,hehasdemotratedexcellentpowersofoervation,andanabilitytomunicateandsuggestchangeineffectivebutnon-threateningways.ToillustrateEarlyon,Hongbinwasaignedtoanimportantresearchprojectasafill-inProjectManager.Inthisrolehewasreoibleforthetechnicalaectsofcreatingaputer-basedsurveyquestioaire(fromonegiventohimbyourclientservicesdepartment),monitoringthetelephonedatacollectionproce,andpletingthedataproceingandanalysisofthesurveyresults.Fromthebegiingofthisaignment,Hongbinbegantore-defineourexpectatioofagoodprojectmanager.Hestartedbyparticipatingindiscuiowiththeclientandsuggestingandimplementingseveralchangestothescriptthatshorteneditslengthandclarifiedtheitructiotoreondents.Withoutpromptingorprecedenceheentseveraldaysworkingoddhours,oervingandmonitoringinterviewersandsupervisorsastheybegantofieldthis2000personstudy.Withinafewdayshehadshortenedandclarifiedthescriptevenmore-removingredundantquestio,collaingmultiplequestiointoone,andimprovingtheflowfromquestiontoquestionandscreen-to-screen-alltothegreatpraiseofbothinterviewersandthedirectorofourphonecenter.HehadalsooervedsomethingaboutaparticularaectoftheinterviewingprocethatwasmontoallsurveysatSRR.Hewroteamemotoseveralmanagersoutlininghisproposedchangeinmethodologythatclearlydemotratedthevalueofhisidea:anaualcostreductionofcloseto$50,000.Attheendoftheproject,hewroteaseveralpagecritiqueofourinterviewingandsupervisorystaff.Hedescribedthecharacteristicsandskillsemployedbythebestinterviewershedoervedandmadesuggestioforhowtheseskillscouldbetaughttotheentirestaff.Hisremendatiowerewellreceivedandsoonimplementedbytheverymanagerwhosestaffwasbeingcritiqued;suchwasthevalueofhiscontributionandtheskillandseitivitywithwhichhepresentedhisideas.Inproceingthesurveyresults,HongbinalsoquicklylearnedtouseseveraladvancedstatisticaltechniquesincludingClusterAnalysisandDiscriminantAnalysiswithwhichhehadonlyapaingknowledgepriortotheproject.Hongbinhasalsodemotratedhistechnicalandanalyticalabilitiesinhelpingcreateanewmodelforbiddingonnewbusine,andinearheadingthedevelopmentoftoolthatusedaMaximumLikelihoodalgorithmforascribingmiingreondentdata.Recently,Hongbinhelpedmeidentifythemostdesirablequalificatioandbackgroundofputerprogrammingcandidates,andheaistedmeintherecruitingandmentoringoftwoChinesestudentintertothisposition.Theyhavebothmadesignificantcontributioinonlyafewmonthsofemployment.HongbinisnotanativeEnglisheakerorwriter,andthus,hehashadtoworkveryhardtoclearlymunicatehisideas.Ihaveseenhimgrowinthisareatremendouslyoverthelastoneandhalfyears.Hisattentivelisteningandgreatenthusiasmhashelpedhimovereanylanguagelimitatio.Heisbothself-confidentandself-deprecating,andhasagreatseeofhumorthathashelpedhimformstrongrelatiohiwithsubordinates,peers,andmembersofourmanagementteam.Managersinotherdepartmentsfrequentlyseekhisadvice,andhisnameisalwaysatthetopofthelistwhenchoosingteammemberstoearheadimportantpanyinitiatives.Inalloftheseareas,HongbinWuhasgonebeyondexpectatio,andhasout-shinedallothersinhispeer-groupatSRR.HiseffortswererecentlyrewardedwithapromotiontothepositionofManagerofResearch&Development.Hongbinisverylikeableandambitiousperson.Ihavenodoubtthathewillbeaseriousandenthusiasticstudent,andsomedayaquitesuefulseniorlevelmanagerorentrepreneurthatyouwouldbeproudtocallanalumni.Sincerely,MarkPetermanVicePresidentSRR
