Smokers who quit tend to pack on an average of 5 pounds after they stop smoking cigarettes. A new study, published by the journal Science, explains why this happens. The new research explains that nicotine appears to combine with appetiteregulating neurons (调节食欲的神经元) in the brain, besides the receptors (感受器) that bring about addiction. These neurons help regulate how much food gets consumed, but under the influence of nicotine, they lose their selfcontrol. This is why when smokers quit, they tend to eat more and gain weight. The researchers believe that their discovery will lead to the development of drugs that aim at nicotine receptors on brain cells that control appetite. In the future, weight gain may no longer be a reason for smokers to delay the decision to kick the habit, but thats no reason to wait.Nicotinereplacement treatment, while not for everyone, can help. Here are a few more ways to quit smoking and stay slim.Drink water. To improve metabolic (新陈代谢的) rates which is helpful in losing weight, make half of those glasses ice water. Juice can be too high in calories, something youll want to keep an eye on your journey toward being a slimmer nonsmoker.Plan your snacks. Healthy snacks help keep your metabolism working, so you continue to burn calories while stopping wild hunger pain, or fake hunger.Keep moving.Exercise kills two birds with one stone. It helps you burn calories and prevents you from eating when youre not truly hungry. Its also a feelgood stress reliever (缓解物)Focus on your fitness and how being healthy makes you feel.Make exercise a goal and think of quitting as your reward for being physically fit. 该如何应对戒烟后发胖的问题呢?1Which of the following changes peoples appetite according to the new research?ANicotine.BAppetiteregulating neurons.CThe receptors that bring about addiction.DThe food that has been consumed. 2The author believes that _.Aice water can improve metabolic ratesBsmokers should eat fewer snacks to keep slimCstress can lead to fake hungerDexercise can help one eat less解析:选A细节理解题。由文章倒数第四段“To improve metabolic rates . ice water.” 3According to the passage, we can infer that _.Aexercise helps you burn calories and makes you not want to eatBspeeding up metabolic rates is helpful to lose weightCit is nicotine that regulates how much food gets consumedDdrinking water is good to reduce the stress解析:选B推理判断题。 4The purpose of the text is _.Ato introduce the result of a new studyBto explain the reason why smokers become slimCto prove the possibility of being a slim nonsmokerDto tell us ways to quit smoking without gaining weight解析:选D主旨大意题。 BIn the quest (寻求) for better health, many people turn to doctors, selfhelp books or herbal supplements. But they overlook a powerful weapon that could help them fight illness and depression, speed recovery, slow aging and prolong life: their friends.Researchers are only now starting to pay attention to the importance of friendship and social networks in overall health. A 10year Australian study found that older people with a large circle of friends were 22 percent less likely to die during the study period than those with fewer friends. A large 2007 study showed an increase of nearly 60 percent in the risk for obesity among people whose friends gained weight. And last year, Harvard researchers reported that strong social ties could promote brain health as we age.“In general, the role of friendship in our lives isnt well appreciated,” said Rebecca G. Adams, a professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. “There are a lot of things on families and marriage, but very little on friendship. It baffles me. Friendship has a bigger impact on our psychological wellbeing than family relationships.”Bella DePaulo, a visiting psychology professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, whose work focuses on single people and friendships, notes that in many studies, friendship has an even greater effect on health than a spouse (配偶) or a family member. It isnt entirely clear why friendship has such a big effect. It may be because people with strong social ties also have better access to health services and care. Beyond that, however, friendship clearly has a profound psychological effect. People with strong friendships are less likely than others to get colds, perhaps because they have lower stress levels.Last year, researchers studied 34 students at the University of Virginia, taking them to the base of a steep hill and fitting them with a weighted backpack. They were then asked to estimate the steepness of the hill. Some participants stood next to friends during the exercise, while others were alone. The students who stood with friends gave lower estimates of the steepness of the hill. And the longer the friends had known each other, the less steep the hill appeared.“People with stronger friendship networks feel like there is someone they can turn to,” said Karen A. Roberto, director of the center for gerontology (老年医学) at Virginia Tech. “Friendship is an undervalued (估价过低的) resource. The consistent message of these studies is that friends make your life better.” 5Whats the main idea of the passage?APeople should make friends as many as possible.BFriendships do great good to human health.CPeople with friends have optimistic attitude.DSeveral studies have been done on friendships. 6Which of the following is TRUE?APeople havent attached importance to friendships.BA friend can replace doctors and selfhelp books.CPeople with many friends may have higher stress levels.DPeople who have friends tend to be fat. 7The author mentioned the study in the last three paragraphs to indicate that _.Astudents should climb the steep hill with friendsBit takes a long time to make friendsCa friend in need is a friend indeedDpeople accompanied by friends remain optimistic in the face of difficulty解析:选D推理判断题。倒数第二段中“The students who stood with friends gave lower estimates of the steepness of the hill.” 8.
