BHere are two phrases about the word“cat”. “To bell the cat”means to take action1is risky. The phrase comes from an old story. A family of mice could get no food2of its fear of a cat. The mice decided that the best thing to do would be to tie a bell3the cats neck. That would tell them4the cat was. All agreed that it was a splendid idea until one wise mouse stepped up and asked, “Who will bell the cat? ”There is5expression, “to be a cats paw. ”It means to be used, to be fooled, or6(make)to do someone elses dirty work. It is similar to the expression, “to pull someones chestnuts from the fire. ”That phrase goes7to the early 1500s. It comes from an old story about a monkey who had his eye on some chestnuts8(roast)on the fire. The monkey tried to seize a few, but had to pull his fingers back from the burning coals. Then he saw a cat nearby. He seized the cats paw and9(hold)it in his own and in this way pulled some chestnuts out of the fire. The cat, of course, screamed and brought the cook10its rescue. COne day a young man was standing in the middle of the town proclaiming(宣告)that he had the most beautiful heart in the whole valley. A large crowd1(gather), and they all admired his heart for it was perfect. Suddenly, an old man appeared and said, “Why, your heart is not nearly as beautiful as2. ”The crowd and the young man looked at the old mans heart, which was full of scars. It had places where pieces had been removed and other3(piece)put in, but they didnt fit quite right, and there were several jagged(凹凸不平的)edges. In fact, in some places there were deep gouges(沟槽)where whole pieces were4(miss). The young man laughed. “Comparing your heart with mine, mine is perfect and yours is a mess of scars. ”“Yes, ”said the old man, “Yours looks perfect5I would never trade with you. You see, every scar represents a person to6I have given my love. I tear out a piece of my heart and give it to them, and often they give me a piece of their heart that fits into the empty place in my heart. But because the pieces arent exact, I have some rough edges, which I cherish, because they remind me of7love we shared. Sometimes I have given pieces of my heart away, and the other person hasnt returned a piece of his or her heart8me. These are the empty gouges. Although these gouges are painful, they stay open, 9(remind)me of the love I have for those people. So now do you see10true beauty is? ”DOur story begins in Britain in eighteen seventy-three.
