With our eyes focused on our smartphones, fewer of us make conversation with strangers. But are we missing something in this loss of relaxing small talk?A growing body of research suggests that small talk has surprising benefits. In a study published in 2014 in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, researchers found that daily interactions with casual acquaintances(熟人) can contribute to daytoday wellbeing. Participants(参与者) were asked to record their daily interactions with people connected to them by “strong ties”(family and friends) and “weak ties”(acquaintances). On days when participants had more “weak tie” interactions than usual, they reported a greater sense of belonging and happiness. In a study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology in 2014, another group of researchers looked at interactions among strangers. They invited 118 commuters(通勤者) at a Chicagoarea railway station and gave them one of three roles: to start a conversation on the train, to avoid any conversation and enjoy the solitude(loneliness) or to do whatever they normally do on their commute. In surveys completed afterward, those who were instructed to make conversation with strangers reported “notably more positive” commutes than those who rode in solitude.“Talking with a stranger may not offer the same benefits as talking with a close friend, but we underestimate(低估) its importance to us,” says the studys coauthor, Nicholas Epley, a professor of behavioral science at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Dr. Epley traded in his own smartphone for an old featureless phone, which has made him, he says, more open to “wonderful, short conversations with strangers”People overestimate the social risks involved in small talk, adds Dr. Epley, “Most people not only want to talk to you; theyll tell you secret things they may not even tell a family member.”【解题导语】本文是一篇议论文。 1The first study got the findings from the participants by comparing their _Astrong and weak tie interactionsBcasual and close acquaintancesCprivate and public interactionsDfamily members and friendsA解析:推理判断题。 2What did the study done on the train find out?APeople are likely to ride in solitude on the train.BFew commuters like to chat with strangers.CThere are three kinds of train commuters.DChats with strangers bring joy to people.D解析:细节理解题。 In surveys completed afterward. who rode in solitude. 3Which of the following would Dr. Epley probably agree with?AIt is nicer to talk with strangers than friends.BSmartphones may kill small talk with strangers.CPeople fail to realize the importance of friendship.DMost strangers prefer to spend time on their phones.B解析:推理判断题。 Dr. Epley traded in his own smartphone for an old featureless phone, which has made him, he says, more open to “wonderful, short conversations with strangers”可推断,Epley博士应该会认为,智能手机可能会扼杀与陌生人的闲谈。4What does the text mainly discuss?AThe interactions with strangers.BThe loss of relaxing small talk.CThe influence of smartphones.DThe important role of small talk.D解析:主旨大意题。 A growing body of research suggests that small talk has surprising benefits. Life is to be lived. No excuses. No holding back.A story about the violinist Fritz Kreisler tells how he once _1_ a beautiful instrument he wanted to get. When he _2_ raised the money for the violin, he returned to _3_ it and learned that it had already been sold to a(n) _4_He went to the new owners home in order to try to _5_ him to sell the violin. _6_, the collector said it was one of his valuable possessions and he could not let it go.Kreisler felt _7_ and turned to leave, but then asked a favor,“May I play the instrument once more _8_ it is put away?” _9_ was given and the great musician began to play. The _10_ sang out a quality of music which was so beautiful that the collector himself could only listen in _11_.“I have no _12_ to keep that to myself,”he said after the musician finished.“The violin is yours, Mr Kreisler.Take it into the world, and let people _13_ it.”For you and I are excellent violinsour _14_ is meant to be heard.I want to live my _15_ that wayto take it into the world and live it fully.Id rather be _16_ than die not having done whatever I could.Im not talking about _17_ ourselves by doing too much.Happiness is never found in overmuch(过多) busyness(忙碌)But it is found in applying our lives to helping others.Say yes when asked for a hand. _18_ to work for a charity organization.Spend an hour with a _19_ relative. In the end, I know that my happiness is not about what I can or cannot do.It is about how much I _20_ to others. My life is meant to be lived.【解题导语】一把小提琴的美妙乐音应该被世人听到,同样,我们的生活也要过得有意义。 find out“查明”;give up“放弃”;take over“接管”;come across“偶然遇见”。 3A.show BpickCbuy DplayC解析:根据下文中的“it had already been sold”以及“try to _ him to sell the violin”可知,此处是说Fritz Kreisler去买那把小提琴。4A.collector BmusicianCperformer DinventorA解析:根据下文中的“.the collector said it was one of his valuable possessions”可知,此处应选collector。 8A.so that BunlessCas if DbeforeD解析:根据上下文内容可知,Fritz Kreisler喜欢这把小提琴却又得不到它,所以请求在小提琴被收起来之前用这把小提琴演奏一次。9A.Permission BJudgment CAward DMoneyA解析:根据下文中的“the great musician began to play”可知,收藏家同意了他的请求,所以应选Permission。
