And of course I must express our thanks to those whove worked behind the scenes, and especially our producer. But most of all I want to say thank you to all of you for coming here this evening and supporting this event, especially in such weather. I think perhaps I should take this chance to make an apology to those sitting in the back rows. Weve made some repairs to the roof, but unfortunately the rain tonight was unexpectedly heavy, and were thankful to you for your understanding and cheerful good humor. We had hoped that the repairs would be enough. But we were recently told that the whole roof would have to be replaced. We were upset to learn the news because its only five years since we replaced the roof of the church itself. And so we shall be having another concert soon, I hope. A(2014湖北B)Londons newest skyscraper (摩天大楼) is called the Shard and it cost about 430 million pounds to build. At a height of almost 310 metres, it is the tallest building in Europe. The Shard has completely changed the appearance of London. However, not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better. The Shard was designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. When he began designing the Shard for London, Piano wanted a very tall building that looked like a spire (尖顶). He wanted the glass surfaces to reflect the sky and the city. The sides of the building arent regular. So the building has an unusual shape. It looks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name: the Shard. Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition. The shape reminds him of the spires of the churches of London or the tall masts (桅杆) of the ships that were once on the river Thames. The Shard has 87 floors. At the top, there is an observatory. At the moment the building is empty, but eventually there will be a fivestar hotel. There will also be top quality restaurants, apartments and offices. Before building work began, a lot of people didnt want the Shard though the plans were approved. Now they are still unhappy about the Shard. Some critics say that such a tall skyscraper might be good in a city like New York, but not in London. They say that the best thing about the Shard is its spire shape. But that is the only thing. There is no decoration, only flat surfaces. The Egyptians did that 4,500 years ago. They also think the Shard is too big for London. It destroys the beauty of the city.Other critics dont like what the Shard seems to represent. They say that the Shard shows how London is becoming more unequal. Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in the hotel. But the people who live near the Shard are among the poorest in London. So the Shard seems a symbol of the division in society between the very rich and the poor. The Shard now dominates the London skyline. It is not certain, however, that ordinary London citizens will ever accept it as a valuable addition to the city. 21Londons newest skyscraper is called the Shard because of _.Aits cost Bits sizeCits shape Dits height答案:C细节理解题。由文章第二段信息第五句“So the building has an unusual shape. It looks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name: the Shard.” 22When he designed the Shard, Piano wanted it to _.Achange Londons skylineBinherit Londons traditionCimitate the Egyptian styleDattract potential visitors答案:B细节理解题。由文章第二段信息第八句“Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition. The shape reminds him of the spires of the churches of London or the tall masts (桅杆) of the ships that were once on the river Thames.” 23The critics who refer to social division think the Shard _.Ais only preferred by the richBis intended for wealthy peopleCis far away from the poor areaDis popular only with Londoners答案:B推理判断题。 24Which would be the best title for the passage?AThe Shard: Cheers and ClapsBThe Shard: Work of a Great ArchitectCThe Shard: New Symbol of London?DThe Shard: A Change for the Better? 特别是文章第一段的最后一句话“However, not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better.” B( 吉林实验中学检测)My studentteaching experience was a wonderful adventure. The hallways were decorated with colorful motivational posters and student work. I enjoyed working with a small reading group of students with a variety of personalities, all boys. Some were quiet, some were talkative, and some were natural performers. Nevertheless, they all were excited about learning and looked forward to the reading group meeting every morning. The greatest part of it was developing a relationship with two students. One of these students name was Michael, a kindergartener. Before I became a morning bus assistant, I heard that Michael was a challenging student who would always shout, stand up on the bus, pick on other students, and distract the bus driver. So one morning when he got on the bus, I decided to sit Michael in the seat beside me. At first he didnt like this idea and pouted (撅嘴) about it. But soon he settled down, knowing he had no choice. So I began to talk to him about little things outside of school life, such things as his weekend activities and things that he liked to do. I also listened closely to him when he talked and thoroughly responded to his ideas. As I gave Michael the attention that he needed, little by little, Michael acted out less and less outrageous (猖狂的).His transformation was noticed by all, by the students and especially the bus driver.Another student I took a special interest in was a boy named Tony, a third grader. To some Tony would seem to be a slow or unmotivated (无积极性的) learner. So I decided to see if I could find a way to motivate Tony to stay on task with his seat work. I would sit in the seat next to him and encourage him with every step of seat work he accomplished. This helped him to stay motivated and at least the work was getting done on time. Before long, he paid more attention to his study and scored high on all the tests he took. I knew that all Tony needed was to be motivated on a one on one basis. 25In the authors opinion, the most unforgettable part of his/her teaching experience was _.Aacting as a morning bus assistantBdeveloping a relationship with two studentsChelping students become motivated learnersDworking with students with a variety of personalities答案:B细节理解题。 The greatest part of it was developing a relationship with two students. 26The author sat beside Michael on the bus in order to _.Arestrict (限制) his behaviorBmake him angryCkeep him safeDcriticize (批评) him答案:A推理判断题。 故选A项。27Which of the following had nothing to do with Tony in class _?AHe was uninterested in what the teacher was explaining.BHe often shouted and stood up to distract the teacher.CHe seemed to stare into nothing and think of nothing.DHe always had a blank sheet of paper on the desk. 28Michael and Tony made rapid progress with the authors _.Asupport and understandingBcare and encouragementCpraise and motivationDteaching and patience答案:B推理判断题。 C( 内蒙古包头一中三模)Electric cars are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be more dirty than their gasolinepowered cousins.People in California love to talk about “zeroemissions (排放) vehicles”, but people in California seem to be_clueless about where electricity comes from. Power plants mostly use fire to make it. Aside from the few folks who have their roofs covered with solar ceils, we get our electricity from generators (发电机). Generators are fueled by somethingusually coal, oil, and also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal (地热的) plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something. In other words, those “zeroemissions” cars are likely coalburning cars. Its just because the coal is burned somewhere else, so it looks clean. It is not. Its as if the California greens are covering their eyes“If I cant see it, its not happening.” Gasoline is an unbelievably efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it. But when you take that gas or another fuel and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heatat the generator, through the transmission lines, etc.A gallon of gas may propel your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas wont get you nearly as farso electric cars burn more fuel than gaspowered ones. If our electricity came mostly from geothermal, or hydro, or solar, or wind, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons, we dont use much of those energy sources. In addition, electric cars batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill (垃圾) and finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When its a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot. 29What is the main idea of the passage?AElectric cars are not clean at all.BElectric cars are better than gasolinepowered ones.CPeople have doubts about electric cars batteries.DGasoline is an effective way to power a vehicle. 故选A项。30The underlined words “be clueless” mean _.Aknow nothingBhave confidenceCfeel excitedDbe pleased答案:A词义猜测题。 故选A项。31The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car run _.Anot less than 25 milesBas far as 50 milesCas far as 25 milesDnot more than 25 miles答案:D推理判断题。根据第四段第一、二句“A gallon of gas may propel your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas wont get you nearly as far.” 32According to the passage, electric cars _.Aare more environmentally friendlyBburn more fuel than gaspowered onesCare very good at cleaning upDare poisonous for a long time答案:B细节理解题。根据第四段第二句中的“.so electric cars burn more fuel than gaspowered ones.” D( 河北衡水二模)Evening WorkshopsOptional evening workshops will be held at small restaurants or other meeting places near the conference hotel.
