The language has more words than any other over 1 million, according to the Global Language Monitor. Out of this number, the average (平均的) American college student knows between 8,000-15,000.Realizing that words are the building blocks of language, many Chinese students try hard to catch up. They often make long lists of words, and memorize their meanings and Chinese translations. The bad news is that this method may do them little good when it es to college entrance tests (入学考试), like the SATs. For these tests, a student needs to fully understand many words and their different uses. But the good news is that there are better ways to build your English vocabulary.Vocabulary learning system (系统)The first thing to do is to develop an organized (有条理的) but easy way of collecting and learning new words. For example, a card system should include the following information:Word Simple definition (定义) in English Phrase or sentence Related (相关的) words Synonyms (同义词) and antonyms (反义词) Chinese meaning on the back of the card. The good thing about this system is that with a single card, a student can learn not just one word, but a group of related words.Keep your cards on a removable metal ring, so you can carry them around and add more to your collection every day.Learn by theme (主题), not alphabetExperts have found that people understand and remember facts better if they are given in logical (合逻辑的) groups. For example, it is much easier to remember words that are related to each other than it is to remember a list of unrelated words.Creating lists of words related to mon themes such as friendship, family, wealth, poverty, careers, sciences will be much easier to learn and remember than collecting words related only by their first letters.21.Why is English learning a challenge to non-native speakers, according to the writer?A. English grammar is different from Chinese grammar.B. English has the largest vocabulary among languages.C. Its difficult for them to understand the logic of the language.D. Many English words have different meanings and usages.22. What problem do Chinese students have in studying English according to the article?A. Their method of learning English vocabulary is poor.B. They think theres no need to learn a large vocabulary.C. They do not work hard enough to increase their vocabulary.D. They find it hard to municate with native speakers.23. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. American college students have a vocabulary of more than 15,000 words on average.B. Memorization of words is of little help in learning English.C. Students should not use Chinese when they memorize English words.D. SATs examiners look out for how well Chinese students understand English words.BIn Europe many people died during the Second World War. As a result, at the end of the war there were many orphans (孤儿) there. A man called Hermann Gmeiner wanted to help these children. His idea was simple. He wanted orphans to have a home, and he wanted them to have the care and kindness of parents. Gmeiner asked people to give him some money. With this money he built the first SOS Childrens Village at Imst, in Austria. It opened in1949. This is how the SOS stand for “Save Our Souls(灵魂).” This means, “Please help us!” An SOS Children village gives help to orphans. Hermann Gmeiners idea for helping orphans soon spread(传播)all over the world. By 1983 there were 170 SOS Childrens Villages in the world. People in many countries give money to help the villages. Today the children from the first village have grown up. Now some of them work in other SOS Childrens Villages. In SOS Villages orphans live in family groups. There are several houses in each village. The biggest village has 40 or 50 houses! Between seven and ten children live in a house. A woman lives with each group of children and looks after them. She gives the children a lot of love and kindness. She cooks meals for them and makes fortable, happy home for them. Of course, the children dont spend all their time in the village. They go to school; they go out with their friends. But the village gives them a homesometimes for the first time in their lives.24. The SOS Childrens Villages are built for_ first. A. the children who are poor B. the orphans in Europe C. the kind women D. people who died in the war.25. We can conclude from the article that the money for helping the SOS Villages mainly es from_.A. governments B. special organization C. people in different countries D. the orphans themselves26. Which of the following is NOT the work a woman in an SOS Village does for each group of children?A. She lives with the children and looks after them.B. She gives the children a lot of love and kindness.C. She cooks meals for children. D. She teaches the children how to use the puter.C1 Study aloneSometimes kids who study in a group can pick up new ideas and tips from others. Do you really want to take that chance?2 Dont bother taking notesThe mere process of writing down the teachers ments would make some of the material sink in, especially for some learners. If you take class notes, youre more likely to have all the material you need when it es time to study for a test. Forget that! Dont write anything down, especially if it sounds important.3 Fall asleep in classYou can always spot the kids who get good report cards. They are wide awake when the teacher is talking or showing examples on the board. You can tell these kids never watch TV or play video games until the wee hours(凌晨) of the morning. You can secure a really bad grade if you stay up half the night, drag yourself to class, then doze a little while the instructor is talking.4 Leave your work at homeIf, by some chance, you do all your homework and you do it very well, you still have a great shot at failing. All you have to do is leave your work at home! Successful students always gather all their materials together the night before.5 Annoy the teacherChew gum, dont pay attention in class, talk to your friends, sleepdo whatever you can to get on your teachers nerves. If you annoy the teacher, he or she will always know whether to give you credit for effort.6 Dont study for a test until the night beforeKids who get As and Bs usually begin studying as soon as they find out a test is ing. They start out by reading over all their notes the first night or two, then start testing themselves with little practice questions they make up. If you really want to get an F, avoid this kind of behavior at all costs. Wait until the night right before exam day.27. What do you think of the statements listed in bold letters?A. We can benefit from them.B. Some of them are good for us in our study.C. They tell us never to study like them.D. We should avoid such behaviors at work.28. What does the phrase “sink in” mean?A. Go down under the surface of water. B. Understood clearly by the learnersC. Destroyed pletely by the learners D. Good for the learners29. Which of the following statements is not true?A. You can keep good grades if you are wide awake while the teacher is talking.B. Successful kids are always well prepared for the materials the night before.C. Never pay attention in class, and the teacher will give you credit for effort.D. Kids can get As and Bs if they read over their notes at the beginning.30. Which of the following behaviors can get the instructor angry?A. Chewing gum ,talking to your friends in class , paying attention to the teacherB. Sleeping ,chewing gum, talking to your friendsC. Talking to your friends, taking notes in class, paying attentionD. Studying in group, taking notes, paying attentionDOne of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school?Listen Listen when they are talking. Dont say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes its not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings. Help them If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you dont do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra (额外的) pencil or pen with you to classes in case (以防) they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need. Be there for them Try to make something for your friend to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for a friend. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you cant stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve (值得) to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you dont want to stay with your friends when theyre in hard times, then you dont deserve to be with them when theyre having a good time!_ Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And youll remember these things when youre all old!31.
