2008年12月PETS-5作文试题Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents are the best teachers. Write a composition for about 250 words to the newspaper to say if you agree to this point or not. Base your idea on you experience and knowledge. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.本作文考对“家长是否最好的老师”这一观点的论证或反证。论证也罢,反证亦可,只要有道理,都能得高分。When it comes to the issue as to whether parents are the best teacher of children, people may have different opinions. Generally, children will have different teachers in schools and colleges. As I see it, the best teachers are the parents. The reasons are as follows. To begin with, parents are the first teachers of their children. It is true that other teachers will teach a child a great deal of knowledge and how to achieve success in the future. But it is also true that parents begin to teach a child when he/she is a baby. What the parents give the child is not only the necessary knowledge in daily life, but also the love and care. Moreover, teachers just teach children at school, but parents teach a child at any time. Undoubtedly, parents will try their best to teach their child, not because of money or responsibility, but mainly because of pure parental love. Furthermore, if parents expect that the child will have a bright future, they will learn how to teach the child and ask for help of other teachers if necessary. It is because of the great love and patience of the parents that a child will grow successfully and healthfully. A child will learn how to behave at home and in public, how to respect others and how to learn well at school. Meanwhile, the long term interaction with the parents will enable a child to trust the parents. Undoubtedly, this trust is of great importance in education of a child. Common sense tells us that a childs success depends a great deal on parents, mainly because that the parents are his/her close friends and teachers. To sum up, some parents, due to their poor education background, may have trouble teaching their children. But with patience and love, they will learn how to teach the kids to behave well and develop abilities necessary in the future. In this sense, parents are the best teachers of a child. 作文二The first teachers we have in our lives in most cases are our parents. They teach us how to walk, speak, and have good manners before we reach the real world. We do have professional teachers in school, however, parents are generally the most involved in the development and education of children.First of all, our parents are the best teachers at the beginning of our lives, which actually corresponds to the parents role in nature. Parents are most committed and involved in teaching their children; they have a kind of instinct to sacrifice a part of themselves for the development of their children. They not only love us and have great patience while passing down their knowledge to us, but also wish us a success and thus will not teach us bad things. It is true that implicit learning occurs when children unconsciously copy some of their parents habits and styles of behavior.Secondly, during the second stage of child development, adolescence, parents can still be in the best position to offer advice even though the children might not accept it. In this case, perhaps the childs friends would be the best teachers. Adolescents are notoriously rebellious in many cultures and may automatically reject any advice from their parents. My first marriage for instance, was solely a matter of doing the opposite when my parents tried to intrude in offering their advice. So in such matters, parents should be much more flexible and be rather the partners with their children. Surely, being a teacher of growing child become more and more complicated case as the time passes and many parents are simply not able to meet the increased demands.Admittedly, parents are not professional teachers and they tend to be very biased by their love of their children. Parents usually can present only one viewpoint of the world, while good teaching should be based on different attitudes. Thus, when children go to school and have a variety of teachers, they learn much more than their parents could probably teach them. Furthermore, once our parents get older, they become more conservative and cannot always be objective in regard to modern trends and fashions. Thus we need to take their advice with caution during that period. However, the great love which exists in a families still makes our parents very good teachers and advisers at any time.In conclusion, while parents are not the ideal teachers, and well-rounded children will generally need a great diversity of teachers in their lives in order to have a more accurate view of the world, parents are generally the most committed of all teachers and have the greatest emotional investment in their children and their future.作文要点小结Directory: Understanding the essay question: There are different types of PETS5 essay questions. You never know which question you will receive, so you must be prepared to write on ALL the types of questions. It is very important that you completely understand the question BEFORE you begin to write. Below are some different types of essay questions.1. Choose a point of view and support that view.Example: Some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes. Others believe that going to classes should be optional for students. Which point of view do you agree with? Use specific reasons and details to explain your answer. This type of question asks you to look at only ONE side of the issue, the side you agree with. DONT write about both sides. You tell which side you agree with and support your ideas with details and examples.2. Describe something.Example: If you could invent something NEW, what product would you develop? Use specific details to explain why this invention is needed? In answering this type of question, you MUST be creative. It asks you to describe something NEW, something that does not exist. You must describe it in detail AND tell why it is necessary. 3. Compare two points of view and tell which one you agree with. Example: Some people think that children should begin their formal education at a very early age and should spend most of their time on school studies. Others believe that young children should spend most of their time playing. Compare these two views. Which view do you agree with? Why? In this type of question, you must write about BOTH sides of this issue and then tell which side you agree with. You may NOT say that you agree with both sides. You MUST make a choice. First, give support, details and examples of both sides of the issue. Then, tell which side you agree with and why. 4. Agree or disagree with something. Example: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: ONLY people who earn a lot of money are successful. Do you agree or disagree with this definition of success? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. In this type of question, you MUST agree or disagree. You cannot be unsure or indecisive. After you have said whether you agree or disagree, you must give convincing reasons and examples for your choice. 5. Explain why something is true. Example: People remember special gifts or presents that they have received. Why? Give specific reasons and examples to support your answer. In this question, you should use lots of examples. (For this question, you would use examples of gifts one might receive and tell why those gifts are memorable). Do not write in the first person, I. Write in more general terms. 6. Support an idea or plan. Example: It has recently been announced that a new restaurant may be built in your neighborhood. Do you support or oppose this plan? Why? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer. In this question, first tell whether you support or oppose the plan and then tell why. Since this question is somewhat personal, it is ok to use personal pronouns such as: I, me, my in your answer. The parts of an essay: In every essay, there should be an introduction, a body and conclusion.A. The introduction: The introduction restates the question using different vocabulary and/or sentence structure. The introduction also includes your thesis statement, the most important sentence in your essay. B. The body: The body of your essay is also the heart of your essay. It will include your main ideas and details and examples to support those ideas. Each new idea should be a new paragraph. Typically, a PETS5 essay will have 3 - 4 body paragraphs.C. The conclusion:The conclusion will be your final paragraph. It will summarize all the main ideas in your essay and it may also include your opinion. How to write a good introduction:Lets look at some more essay questions to see how to restate the question and how to write your thesis statement.PETS5 Essay Question #1:Some people prefer to eat at food stands or restaurants. Other people prefer to prepare and eat food at home. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. Thesis Statement:People have two options when deciding where to eat. They can prepare meals and eat at home or they can go out to stands or restaurants. I prefer to go out to eat because the food is more varied and interesting, it is less work for me and it saves time. Main Idea The restatement mentions the two types of options people have for eating and tells which one the author prefers. In addition, it gives three reasons for that preference. These three reasons will make up the three main idea paragraphs in the body of the essay. Essay Question #2: Is it better for children to participate in team sports or individual sports? Why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. Thesis Statement: It is better for children to participate in team sports rather than individual sports. In team sports, children learn how to cooperate. They learn good sportsmanship and how to rely on their teammates. These are important lessons that will benefit children throughout their lives. Main Idea: The first sentence clearly states the authors opinion. This is followed by three reasons for the opinion. Finally, the author mentions life lessons. In the essay, the three reasons will make up the three main idea paragraphs in the body of the essay. In addition, the author will mention how each main idea is useful throughout life. Essay Question #3: Some people prefer to live in a small town. Others prefer to live in a big city. Which place would you prefer to in? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer. Thesis Statement: There are many good reasons to live in a big city and an equal number of good reasons to live in a small town. I, myself, prefer to live in a small town because it is more personal and homey; it is easier to get around in and it is safer than a big city. Main Idea: The first statement says that both a city and town have positive aspects. The next sentence tells the authors preference and reasons for that preference. These reasons will make up the body of the essay. How to write good body paragraphs: Each paragraph in your essay introduces a new idea. It should include a thesis statement followed by support and examples. Be sure to use some of examples. Within and between paragraphs be sure to use transition words like: on the other hand, however, though, for example, in contrast, likewise, in addition, first, finally. The paragraph should end with a concluding sentence that briefly summarizes the ideas in the paragraph. The elements of a good concluding paragraph: A good concluding paragraph should include a summary of your main points. It may also include the authors opinion. It should NOT introduce any new ideas. A good concluding paragraph often leaves an impression on the reader. It may make the reader think more deeply about the topic. Preparing to write and writing your essay: 1. A sample essay outline: Essay Question: In some countries, teenagers have jobs while they are still students. Do you think this is a good idea? Students will learn how to work as a member of a teama. Students will learn how to compromise with other employees (helping out when someone is sick, etc.)b. Students will learn about the friendship that comes from teamwork (feeling like you can trust others) V. ConclusionIt is a valuable experience for teenagers to have jobs while they are students because they will learn to be responsible adults. They will have an appreciation for money and they will learn about working with others. All of these traits will benefit them throughout their lives. Some students participate in school activities such as clubs and sports. Other students do not take part in such activities because they spend more time on their studies. Tell why you think the two groups of students spend their time differently. Which type of student do you prefer to be? Explain why.结构1:1)开头段2)讨论A side3) 讨论B side4) My preference and conclusion结构2:1)开头段2)简要讨论A side 和 B side3) 我的选择和理由4) 重述我的观点Sample Essay (1) If you go to the campus of a school or university, you will quickly see colorful variegated announcements here and there in the student area. They give information about school activities organized by clubs and sport teams. Some students stop to read these announcements and they are happy to join some activities, whereas some students show no interest in them and pass by without turning their eyes. They are of another type of students. The first group participates in these activities it for various reasons. They think they come to school not merely for book knowledge. The clubs can provide them with practical knowledge other than what they can learn in the classroom. Next, they can build up their health if they are involved with some sorts of sports. Thirdly, both clubs and sports can offer them some relaxation after several hours of hard work. And the most important is that clubs and sports enable them to meet people, to know people and to work with people. Since school is a microcosm of society, the students should prepare themselves for their future career. The second group spends their time differently. They travel from their dormitory to the dining hall and then from the dining hall to the lecture hall. When the class is over in the morning, they begin their return trip. The same process is repeated in the afternoon and for all the week days. They think they should spend every minute in pursuit of academic knowledge. Others feel shy to meet people and admit their weakness in public relations. Still others hold the idea that sports are too dangerous and energy-consuming. If you need a break in the course of reading, why not lie in bed for a while? You dont even have to pay for your sports wears. I prefer to be a student of the first group because young people should be like young people: To be young means to be energetic, active and full of life. To sit at desk all day long is no good. As a matter of fact, students of the second type have been declining today.Sample Essay (2) Usually we see two types of students: those who are active in school activities and those who spend more time on their studies and do not take part in school activities. The students who are active in school activities say that it is impossible to keep in good health unless they take sufficient physical recreation. They often cite the saying: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” The students who do not take part in school activities have a different opinion. They argue that art is long, but life is short, and that school life is still shorter; so they have to make the most of their limited school days to learn as much knowledge as they can so that they can be fully prepared to make contributions to the society after graduation. I prefer to be one of the first type because I think good health is indispensable to knowledge-acquisition. Facts show that students who are in poor health are less vigorous and energetic than those who are in good health. Healthy and strong students can absorb knowledge more readily. And a good way to keep us healthy and strong is to go in for activities such as boating, cycling, tennis-playing, dancing and fishing, etc., which are beneficial both to our muscles and to our brains. When we take part in any of these activities, not only our bodies are trained, but also our minds are taken off our work or study for a while and get rela
