The bag contained a book. This chance discovery ended a 12-day search by the Library pany of Philadelphia for a historical treasure-a 120-page diary kept 190 years ago by Deborah Logan, “a woman who knew everybody in her day,” James Green ,the librarian told the magazine American Libraries. Most of the diary is a record of big events in Philadelphia. It also includes a description of British soldiers burning Washington .D. C in the war of 1812. She describes President James Madison on horseback as “perfectly shaking with fear” during the troubled days. George Washington, she writes, mistook her for the wife of a French man, and praised her excellent EnglishThe adventure of the lost book began September 4 when Cory Luxmoore arrived from England to deliver the diary of his ancestor to the Library pany, which he and his wife considered to be the best home for the diary. Green told American Libraries he had the diary in his possession “about five minutes” when Luxmoore took it back because he had promised to show it to one other person. On returning to his hotel after showing the precious book to Green, Luxmoore was shocked to realize that he had left it in the taxi. Without any delay, Green began calling every taxi pany in the city, with no luck, “Ive felt sick since then,” Luxmoore told reporters.According to Green, no one has yet learned how the diary came to the office building .Tom Brennan received a reward of 1,000. Philadelphia gained another treasure for its history, and Luxmoore told reporters, “Its wonderful news. Im on high”.1.This article mainly tells about the story of A. a lost diary B. Deborah Logan C. Cory Luxmoore D. the Library pany 2.From the text, we learn that the diary is now owned by A. Tom Brennan B. an unknown person C. a Philadelphia magazineD. the Library pany of Philadelphia 3.Philadelphia is thought to be the best home for the diary because. A. it was written in Philadelphia B. it tells stories about Philadelphia C. people in the city are interested in old things D. the British and the Americans once fought in Philadelphia BIf there is one thing Im sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people a newspaper has bee a habit passed down from generation to generation. The nature of what is news may changes. What basically makes news is what affects our lives-and the big political stories , the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. Its already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic engineering . In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do -as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.Its quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted electronically from the Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, Im pretty sure that is how it will happen in future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read-say, sport and international news.I think people have got it wrong when they talk about petition between the different media. They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresee that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasnt happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, its never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.4. What is the best title for the passage? A. The Best Way to Get News B. The Changes of Media C. Make Your Own Newspaper D. The Future of Newspaper5. In the writers opinion, in the future, _ A. newspapers will not be printed in publishing houses any longer B. more big political affairs , wars and disasters will make news C. newspapers will cover more scientific research D. more and more people will read newspapers 6. What will probably be in the newspaper made by yourself ? A. Sports and international news B. A menu of all the news C. The most important news D. What you are interested in 7. From the passage , we can infer_. A. newspapers will win the petition among the different media B. newspaper will stay with us together with other media C. television will take the place of newspaper D. the writer believe some media will die out 8. The word “feed off” in the last paragraph means_. A. depend on B. live on C. fight with D. kill offC Telepathy: mind-to-mind contactTelepathy is the ability to municate without the use of the five senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste ). Its an instinct(本能) which can be woken up in times of emergency or need. When we feel that something is happening or about to happen by instinct, were using resources within the unconscious(潜意识) mind. When the resources of two persons unconscious minds link together into the same frequency, we call it Telepathy. We can either send or receive Telepathy. If you know who is calling before you answer the ringing phone, you are probably a good receiver. If you think of a person and he/she calls you, you are most likely to be better at sending. You can easily put your abilities to the test. Think of somebody and will him or her to contact(联系) you. Be patient. The other person may not be a good receiver, but they should contact you much earlier than would normally be expected. Or whenever the phone rings, try “feeling” who is contacting you. Dont guess, but try to feel it with your mind. However, if neither of this work for you, that doesnt mean that you have no ability of telepathy. As mentioned earlier, telepathy is most likely to turn up in case of emergency. Telepathy dreams often contain telepathic messages. Two people may both dream about each other and find that their dreams had a clear connection. These people are probably linking to each others unconscious mind.Telepathy and Relationships. The more people spend time together, the more likely they are to be able to link up to the others mind, especially when separated. There are two reasons for this. One is that they understand the others mind through time spent together; the other is that there is usually a strong desire to municate. A mother will often sense that her child is in danger. This is due to the childs eagerly wanting his or her mother, knowing that this is the person who always want to be there for them, and the mothers deep desire to protect her child from harm.9. Telepathy turns up when we_. A. sense a close friend in danger B. use the five senses together C. recall things from our memory D. think of a stranger 10. Youre better at sending than receiving Telepathy if you_. A. can feel your mom is in danger B. receive a friends call as you wish C. can tell who knocks at your door D. dream of a friend dreaming of you 11. Which is NOT the way to help people gain Telepathy? A. Help them have a strong desire to municate B. Help them link up their unconscious minds C. Let them spend much time together D. Separate them all the time.DWith the possible exception of equal rights, perhaps the most heated argument across the United States today is the death penalty. Many argue that it is an effective deterrent(震慑) to murder, while others think there is no enough proof that the death penalty reduces the number of murders. The argument advanced by those opposed to the death penalty is that it is cruel and inhuman punishment, that it is the mark of a bad society and finally that it is of questionable effectiveness as a deterrent to crime anyway. In our opinion, the death penalty is a necessary action. Throughout recorded history there have always been those peculiar persons in every society who made terrible crimes such as murder. But some are more dangerous than others. For example , it is one thing to take the life of another in time of blind anger, but quite another to coldly plan and carry out the murder of one or more people in the style of a butcher .Thus, murder, like all other crimes, is a matter of different degree. While it could be argued with some reason that the criminal in the first instance should be merely kept from society, such should not be the fate of the latter type murderer. The value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime may be open to discussion. But the majority of people believe that the death penalty protects them. Their belief is proved by the fact that the death penalty prevents murder. For example, from 1954 to 1963, when the death penalty was carried out from time to time in California, the murder rate remained between three and four murders for each 100,000 population. Since 1964 the death penalty has been done only once, and the murder rate has risen to 10.4 murders for each 100,000 population. The sharp climb in the states murder rate, which began when killings stopped, does not happen by chance. It certainly shows that the death penalty does deter many murderers. If the law about death penalty is vetoed(否决), some people will be murdered-some whose lives may have been saved if the death penalty were in effect. This is really a life or death matter. The lives of thousands of people must be protected.12. The main purpose of this passage is to _. A. speak for the majority B. support a veto C. speak ill of the government D. argue for the value of the death penalty 13. Which of the following is among the heated arguments across the USA besides death penalty? A. Air pollution B. The war against Iraq. C. Equal rights D. Election of president. 14. The numbers in the last paragraph show that_. A. if they stick to death penalty, the number of murders will be reduced B. death penalty almost stopped from 1954 to 1963 C. the population of California has risen D. death penalty is of little value.15. It can be inferred that the writer thinks that _. A. the death penalty is the most important problem in the United States today B. the second type of murderers (in Paragraph 4 ) should be sentenced to death C. the veto of the law about death penalty is of little importance D. the value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime is not to be discussed. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。Ali is from a Middle Eastern country.
