Anyanxietyatall. ImsomeonewhosneverbeenabletoanswerthequestionWhatdoyouwanttobewhenyougrowup? See,theproblemwasntthatIdidnthaveanyinterestsitsthatIhadtoomany.Inhighschool,IlikedEnglishandmathandartandIbuiltwebsitesandIplayedguitarinapunkbandcalledFrustratedTelephoneOperator.Maybeyouveheardofus. Thiscontinuedafterhighschool,andatacertainpoint,IbegantonoticethispatterninmyselfwhereIwouldbeeinterestedinanareaandIwoulddivein,beeallconsumed,andIdgettobeprettygoodatwhateveritwas,andthenIwouldhitthispointwhereIdstarttogetbored.AndusuallyIwouldtryandpersistanyway,becauseIhadalreadydevotedsomuchtimeandenergyandsometimesmoneyintothisfield.Buteventuallythissenseofboredom,thisfeelingof,like,yeah,Igotthis,thisisntchallenginganymoreitwouldgettobetoomuch.AndIwouldhavetoletitgo. ButthenIwouldbeeinterestedinsomethingelse,somethingtotallyunrelated,andIwoulddiveintothat,andbeeallconsumed,andIdbelike,YesIfoundmything,andthenIwouldhitthispointagainwhereIdstarttogetbored.Andeventually,Iwouldletitgo.ButthenIwoulddiscoversomethingnewandtotallydifferent,andIwoulddiveintothat. Thispatterncausedmealotofanxiety,fortworeasons.ThefirstwasthatIwasntsurehowIwasgoingtoturnanyofthisintoacareer.IthoughtthatIwouldeventuallyhavetopickonething,denyallofmyotherpassions,andjustresignmyselftobeingbored.Theotherreasonitcausedmesomuchanxietywasalittlebitmorepersonal.Iworriedthattherewassomethingwrongwiththis,andsomethingwrongwithmeforbeingunabletostickwithanything.IworriedthatIwasafraidofmitment,orthatIwasscattered,orthatIwasselfsabotaging,afraidofmyownsuccess. Ifyoucanrelatetomystoryandtothesefeelings,IdlikeyoutoaskyourselfaquestionthatIwishIhadaskedmyselfbackthen.Askyourselfwhereyoulearnedtoassignthemeaningofwrongorabnormaltodoingmanythings.Illtellyouwhereyoulearnedit:youlearneditfromtheculture. WearefirstaskedthequestionWhatdoyouwanttobewhenyougrowup?whenwereaboutfiveyearsold.Andthetruthisthatnoonereallycareswhatyousaywhenyourethatage. Itsconsideredaninnocuousquestion,posedtolittlekidstoelicitcutereplies,like,Iwanttobeanastronaut,orIwanttobeaballerina,orIwanttobeapirate.InsertHalloweencostumehere. Butthisquestiongetsaskedofusagainandagainaswegetolderinvariousformsforinstance,highschoolstudentsmightgetaskedwhatmajortheyregoingtopickincollege.Andatsomepoint,Whatdoyouwanttobewhenyougrowup?goesfrombeingthecuteexerciseitoncewastothethingthatkeepsusupatnight.Why? See,whilethisquestioninspireskidstodreamaboutwhattheycouldbe,itdoesnotinspirethemtodreamaboutallthattheycouldbe.Infact,itdoesjusttheopposite,becausewhensomeoneasksyouwhatyouwanttobe,youcantreplywith20differentthings,thoughwellmeaningadultswilllikelychuckleandbelike,Oh,howcute,butyoucantbeaviolinmakerandapsychologist.Youhavetochoose. Butwhatifyouresomeonewhoisntwiredthisway?Whatiftherearealotofdifferentsubjectsthatyourecuriousabout,andmanydifferentthingsyouwanttodo?Well,thereisnoroomforsomeonelikeyouinthisframework.Andsoyoumightfeelalone.Youmightfeellikeyoudonthaveapurpose.Andyoumightfeelliketheressomethingwrongwithyou.Theresnothingwrongwithyou.Whatyouareisamultipotentialite. Amultipotentialiteissomeonewithmanyinterestsandcreativepursuits.Itsamouthfultosay.Itmighthelpifyoubreakitupintothreeparts:multi,potential,andite.Youcanalsouseoneoftheothertermsthatconnotethesameidea,suchaspolymath,theRenaissanceperson.Actually,duringtheRenaissanceperiod,itwasconsideredtheidealtobewellversedinmultipledisciplines.BarbaraSherreferstousasscanners.Usewhichevertermyoulike,orinventyourown.IhavetosayIfinditsortoffittingthatasamunity,wecannotagreeonasingleidentity. Itseasytoseeyourmultipotentialityasalimitationoranafflictionthatyouneedtoovere.ButwhatIvelearnedthroughspeakingwithpeopleandwritingabouttheseideasonmywebsite,isthattherearesometremendousstrengthstobeingthisway.Herearethreemultipotentialitesuperpowers. Thesecondmultipotentialitesuperpowerisrapidlearning.Whenmultipotentialitesbeeinterestedinsomething,wegohard.Weobserveeverythingwecangetourhandson.Werealsousedtobeingbeginners,becausewevebeenbeginnerssomanytimesinthepast,andthismeansthatwerelessafraidoftryingnewthingsandsteppingoutofourfortzones.Whatsmore,manyskillsaretransferableacrossdisciplines,andwebringeverythingwevelearnedtoeverynewareawepursue,sowererarelystartingfromscratch.
