iwouldnotbestandingheretonightwithouttheunyieldingsupportofmybesttomycampaignmanagerdavidplouffe,mychiefstrategistdavidaxelrod,andthe bestcampaignteameverassembledinthehistoryofpoliticsyoumadethishappen, andiamforevergratefulforwhatyouvesacrificedtogetitdone.butaboveall,iwillneverforgetwhothisvictorytrulybelongstoitbelongs toyou. iwasneverthelikeliestcandidateforthisoffice.wedidntstartwithmuch moneyormanyendorsements.ourcampaignwasnothatchedinthehallsofwashington itbeganinthebackyardsofdesmoinesandthelivingroomsofconcordandthe frontporchesofcharleston.itwasbuiltbyworkingmenandwomenwhodugintowhatlittlesavingstheyhad togivefivedollarsandtendollarsandtwentydollarstothiscause.itgrewstrength fromtheyoungpeoplewhorejectedthemythoftheirgenerationsapathy;wholeft theirhomesandtheirfamiliesforjobsthatofferedlittlepayandlesssleep;from thenotsoyoungpeoplewhobravedthebittercoldandscorchingheattoknockon thedoorsofperfectstrangers;fromthemillionsofamericanswhovolunteered,and organized,andprovedthatmorethantwocenturieslater,agovernmentofthepeople, bythepeopleandforthepeoplehasnotperishedfromthisearth.thisisyourvictory. iknowyoudidntdothisjusttowinanelectionandiknowyoudidntdoitfor me.youdiditbecauseyouunderstandtheenormityofthetaskthatliesahead.for evenaswecelebratetonight,weknowthechallengesthattomorrowwillbringare thegreatestofourlifetimetwowars,aplanetinperil,theworstfinancialcrisis inacentury.evenaswestandheretonight,weknowtherearebraveamericanswaking upinthedesertsofiraqandthemountainsofafghanistantorisktheirlivesfor us.therearemothersandfatherswhowilllieawakeaftertheirchildrenfallasleep andwonderhowtheyllmakethemortgage,orpaytheirdoctorsbills,orsaveenough forcollege.thereisnewenergytoharnessandnewjobstobecreated;newschools tobuildandthreatstomeetandalliancestorepair.theroadaheadwillbelong.ourclimbwillbesteep.wemaynotgettherein oneyearorevenoneterm,butamericaihaveneverbeenmorehopefulthaniam tonightthatwewillgetthere.ipromiseyouweasapeoplewillgetthere.therewillbesetbacksandfalsestarts.therearemanywhowontagreewithevery decisionorpolicyimakeaspresident,andweknowthatgovernmentcantsolveevery problem.butiwillalwaysbehonestwithyouaboutthechallengesweface.iwill listentoyou,especiallywhenwedisagree.andaboveall,iwillaskyoujoinin theworkofremakingthisnationtheonlywayitsbeendoneinamericafortwohundred andtwentyoneyearsblockbyblock,brickbybrick,callousedhandbycalloused hand.
