WhenpeoplelearnthatIamaquadruplet,theireyeswiden.Womeninvariablysay,Yourpoormother.Neighbors,teachers,andfriendsseldomusemyfirstname.Theyperpetuallyrefertomeas“oneoftheWadeboys.”Ortheysay,“Wait,whichoneareyou?”Peoplethinkofmelessasindividualandmorelikeoneinasetofmatchingluggage.Becausetheworlddidnotseemyindividualidentity,IgrewupthinkingIdidnthaveone.Itwouldtakealongtimetoformaclearsenseofself,tobesomethingotherthanaQuad. Myquesttoestablishmyidentitystartedinhighschool.Clubslookedliketheanswer.IjoinedLatin,Tech,Robotics,Art,andSpanishClubs.Buttheyallfeltlikefillers.Onlyoneclubremained.TheCulturalClub.WhywouldIwanttowanttolearnaboutothercultureswhenIcouldntevenfigureoutmypersonalculture? But,itfeltlikemylastoptiontobemorethanjustoneoftheWadeboys. TheCulturalClubgavemedirection.Itincitedacuriositythatcouldonlybesatiatedbylearningaboutthetrialsandtriumphsofpeopleworldwide.Ibegantofollowallthingsinternationalrelations.SinceconflictintheMiddleEastoftenmadeheadlines,theCulturalClubbecameinvolvedwithaidingArabmunities.Wevolunteeredandcreatedcarepacksforrefugeesabroad.Asapersonalproject,IbeganworkingatCincinnatisrefugeeresettlementagency. Iwantedtocontinuebuildinguponthisfoundation.Buthow? Arabicwasmyanswer.Istudiedindependently,butIfeltitwasntenough.So,Iscouredtheweb.Eventually,IduguptheemailofaForeignServiceOfficer.HeradviceledtoaStateDepartmentscholarshiptostudyArabicinMoroo.WhenIwasaepted,Iwasecstatic. IwascaughtoffguardinMoroo.Ifoundmyselfimmersedineverything,fromthefood(areallycoolmixofFrenchandArabcuisine)toracerelations(beingAfrican-American,IwascalledObamamorethanmyname).IgotbittenbyabeggaronthestreetandfelloffacamelintheSahara,allwhiletryingtolearnthenotoriouslydifficultandbeautifullanguagethatisArabic.IdidallofthisnotasaQuad,butasmyself.
