overthepasttwodays,youhaveheardmorethanafewwordsoverandoveragainoverthepasttwodays.theyinclude:egrity.andteamwork.eachofthosewordsrepresentsahugelyimportantconcept.theyarealldifferent.butthereisonewordthattiesthemalltogether.withit,youcanincreasespeed,reducecost,countonthereliabilityandintegrityofotherparties,andworktogetherasateaminachievingflawlessexecution.withoutit,yourorganizationorenterprisewillalwaysbeworkingatcross-purposes. themagicwordistrust.asasubstitutefortryingtocontrolamyriadofactionsthroughdetailedcontracts,constantoversight,andthethreatoflitigationordismissal,elevatingtheleveloftrustwithinanorganizationisthemostpowerfulmeansintheworldofraisingperformance.nothing-andimeannothing-ismoreconducivetobetter,faster,cheaperthanahighlevelofopennessandtrustbetweenpeopleindisparatejobsandlocationswhoareworkingtogethertowardamonend. sowhatistrustandhowdowecapturethisquietlightningandputittowork? theauthorc.s.lewisgottotheheartwhatmostofusmeanwhenwesaywereallytrustsomebodyorsomethingwhenhewrote: youneverknowhowmuchyoureallybelieveanythinguntilitstruthorfalsehoodbeesamatteroflifeordeathtoyou.itiseasytosayyoubelievearopetobestrongandsoundaslongasyouareusingittocordabox.butsupposeyouhadtohangbythatropeoveraprecipice.wouldntyouthenfirstdiscoverhowmuchyoureallytrustedit?thesamewithpeople. asthisquotesuggests,themostimportantponentoftrustisastrongbelief-ahanging-over-the-precipicebelief-inthepleteintegrityofanotherpartyorthing,whetheritistheintegrityofpieceofropeortheintegrityofthestringofpromisesthatwemaketooneanother.onacontinuingbasis,trustisimpossiblewithoutintegrity.itcanonlyexistinthepresenceofhigheststandardsofconduct. letmeciteashiningexampleofthepoweroftrustinvolvingoneofourprincipalcustomers. inleadingoperationiraqifreedom,generaltommyfranksdefiedanoldmilitaryaxiomthatsaysthatanattackingforceshouldhavea3-to-1numericaladvantageoveranentrencheddefender.heattackedwithasmallerforce.unlikeoperationdesertstorm12yearsearlier,operationiraqifreedomdidnotbeginwithamassiveaerialbombardment.anditdidnotstopattheeuphratesriver.withfewerthanhalfthetroopsandlessthanhalfthearmorandartillery,thetroopsundergeneralfranksmanddroveallthewaytobaghdadandbeyondinjustthreeweeks. inhisbook,americansoldier,generalfranksacknowledgesthathislinesofsupply,stretchingmorethan300miles,werethinandvulnerable.buthepointsoutthatalarger,slower,methodicalattackmodel-alongthelinesofoperationdesertstorm-wouldhaveleftsaddamhusseinwithtoomanystrategicoptions,includingthetorchingofiraqsoilfield,thedestructionofthecountrysinfrastructure,andtheabilitytotargetchemicalweaponsatlargeconcentrationsofcoalitionsoldiers.sofrankstookacalculatedrisk.heoptedforacampaignkeyedtospeedandmaneuver-drivingdeepbehindenemylinesonavarietyoffrontsandcreatingconfusionandpanicthroughoutitsranks.whateverelseonemaysayaboutthisstrategy,itwasbasedonahighdegreeoftrust.nomanderwoulddispersehistroops-castingsowideanetwiththeideaofbeingabletoyankittightinafewkeyplaces-unlesshehadtheutmostconfidenceinthinkingthateverybatunitwoulddoitsjobanddoitwellinsupportingthemission. inbusinessasinbat,trustisthegreatenablerinmakingthemostofscarceresources.manypanies,forinstance,havesucceededinincreasingorspeedingproductionwhilegoingfromjust-in-casetojust-in-timelevelsofinventory.just-in-caseisafunctionofalackoftrust;just-in-timeisafunctionoftrust.just-in-casesaysidonttrustmyguystodowhattheysaytheyaregoingtodo;just-in-timesays,iknowicancountonmysuppliers. asithappens,thenumberofmenandwomenwhoworkforboeing,eitherdirectlyasemployeesorindirectlyaspartofsupplierpaniesengagedincarryingoutworkforboeing,isconsiderablylargerthantheforceundergeneralfranksmand.alltold,weareprobablyabout500,000-strong-adesertstorm-sizedforce.asbigasweare,tomovefastandtoexecutewithahighdegreeofprecision,we,too,musthavetotalconfidenceinthepromisesthatwemaketoeachother.thatsthefirstprerequisite. ialsobelieveitisbothpossibleandnecessary-inthepetitivearenathatweoccupy-tobineahard-nosedsenseofattendingtothepracticalitiesofsurvival.withagenuineconcernforthehealthandwell-beingofpartnersandco-workers.inanincreasinglyinterdependentworld,selfishnessisnotaviableoption;tobetooselfishis,ironically,todigyourowngrave. boeingisabigpany-thelargestaerospacepanyintheworld,withmorethan155,000employeesand$50billioninannualrevenues-butourplaceinthegreatschemeofthingsisreallyquitemodest.justabout70%ofthevalueaddedinmostoftheproductsthatbeartheboeingnamewasputtherebysuppliers,notbyouremployees,andthatisupfromabout60%adecadeago.toputthatanotherway,theboeingcompanywillneverbeanybetterthanthenetworkofsuppliersthatfeedandsupportthepanyfrom50statesandmorethan90countriesaroundtheworld. nottoolongafterijoinedboeingin1997(followingthemergerofmcdonnelldouglasintoboeing),idescribedthepanyasarrogant.justasiexpected,thatshockedalotofpeopleinsideboeing.butididsowithapurposeinmind.first,iwantedtodrawattentiontotheideathatweneededtodoabetterjoboflisteningtothecustomer-andlisteningtoothers(i.e.oursuppliersandpartners)inthebestpositiontohelpusdoabetterjob.itsamazinghowmuchyoureabletolearnwhenyouarentdoingallofthetalking.andsecond,iwantedtoremindpeoplethatwewereinabusiness,andinabusiness-regardlessofwhatthenameonthebuildingmaybe-youdontassumethatanybodyowesyoualiving,andyoudontlookattheworldthroughrose-coloredglasses-seeingthingsnotastheyarebutasyouwishthemtobe. butboeinghaschanged.aboveall,wearefocused-intenselyfocused-onexecution.andthathashadprofoundeffectsonourrelationshipswithallofyouinthesuppliermunity. ontheonehand,wehavebeeincreasinglydemandingandselective.since1998,wehavereducedthetotalnumberofsuppliersinoursystembynolessthantwothirds.ontheotherhand,othehandsofthesuppliersthatweseeasthebestofthebest.wehaveestablishedasuppliermanagementuniversity,andwearereachingoutinavarietyofotherways.mostespecially,wearemovingawayfromcontractmanagementinastrictsensetomanagingrelationshipswithbusinesspartners.whatdoesthatmean?firstofall,itmeansmoresharingofinformationandideas-inbothdirections.wearesharingmoreinformationwithyouthaneverbefore-onmarketforecasts,productionrates,inventorylevels,qualityissues,andothercriticaldata-andwearelookingformoreinformationinreturn,includingforward-lookingmetricsthathelpusspotpotentialproblemsinthemaking.wedontwantanyunpleasantandunnecessarysurprises-likethepartsshortagesandproductionproblemsthatplaguedthispanybackin1997and1998.thatshouldnthavehappenedthenanditwonthappeninthefuture.evenmoreimportantly,however,wewantthebenefitofyourideasandexpertisegoingforward.wewantyoufullyengagedwithusinservingtheendcustomer-whetherthatisthemilitarycustomerandothersresponsibilityfornationalsecurity,ortheairlinesandthetravelingpublic.andthatiscertainlysomethingthatishappeningintodaysboeing. goingbackafewyearsago,whowouldhaveguessedthatboeingwouldtrustanotherpany,orgroupofpanies,todothedetaileddesignandbuildofthewingofabrand-newboeingjetliner?butthatisexactwhatwehavedonewiththeboeing7e7dreamliner.wehaveentrustedthecriticalworkofbuildingaboeingwingforthe7e7tomhiofjapan.orwhowouldhaveguessedthatoneofboeingsbiggestandmostimportantprogramsinthedefensearenawouldbeoneinwhichwearentdoinganymetalbendingorproductionatall?butthatisthecasewiththearmysfuturecombatsystemsprogram,whereboeingandsaicareresponsibleforintegratingthedesignandbuildofessentiallyallofthearmysfutureplatforms-everythingthatmovesontheground,intheair,orinspace. likemanyofyourownpanies,boeingismovingupthevaluechainandconcentratingmoreintentlythaneveronafewcorepetencies.forusthatchieflymeansdoinghigh-enddesign,engineering,andsystemsintegration.wearenotstrivingforself-sufficiency.tothecontrary,ourgoalistobeealeanglobalenterprisethatstickstodoingafewthingsexceptionallywellandthatisveryadeptatdrawinguponthestrengthsandtappingintothebestthinkingandpracticesofotherpaniesacrosstheu.s.andaroundtheworld. workingtogether,boeinganditssuppliershavedonesomeamazingthingsinpastcoupleofyears.butthebestyears,withoutadoubt,arestillbeforeus. imagineacarpanyoranyothermajorindustrialconcernthatwasforcedtocutproductionbymorethan50%inathree-yearperiod.yetthathappenedtoourmercialairplanebusiness,andwehavemanagedtheremarkablefeatofstayingprofitableandcontinuingtoinvestinthefuture.nowairtraffichasreturnedtopre9/11levels,andwearelookingforwardtowhatwehopeandexpecttobeaperiodofsustainedandgradualgrowth.longterm,thisisagreatgrowthmarket.oversevendecades,thegrowthinairtraffichasoutpacedtheworldseconomicgrowthbyafactorofabout1.5-to-1.thelineofdemarcationbetweenboeingandairbusisclearlydrawn,bothstrategicallyandculturally,andwelikeourprospects.wethinktheboeing7e7isrightproductattherighttime-andthebiggestthegame-changerincivilaviationsincethe707atthedawnofthejetage.morethanthat,wethinkthatourapproach-withitsemphasisonleanglobalenterprise-givesusaflexibilitythatairbuslacks.eightyearsago,boeingwasnotamajordefensepany.todaywearethenationssecondlargestcontractor,andwehaveestablishedboeingastheleadingindustrypartnertoourgovernmentindevelopinganetwork-centricviewoftheworldandapplythattoawidearrayofconventionandunconventionalthreats.inthefirsthalfofthisyear,idssrevenueswereup14%-to$14.6billion-andwehadanoperatingmarginofcloseto10%.weseeexcellentgrowthandprofitsinthisbusinessforyearstoe. asmostofyouknow,icameoutofretirementtoleadthispanylastdecemberatapainfulmoment.aswewerefacedwithbarrageofcriticismfortheseriousmisdeedsonthepartofafewofourpeople.ipledgedtofixthethingsthatwentwrong,sot
