changehascometoamericaifthereisanyoneouttherewhostilldoubtsthatamericaisaplacewhereallthingsarepossible,whostillwondersifthedreamofourfoundersisaliveinourtime,whostillquestionsthepowerofourdemocracy,tonightisyouranswer.itstheanswertoldbylinesthatstretchedaroundschoolsandchurchesinnumbersthisnationhasneverseen,bypeoplewhowaitedthreehoursandfourhours,manyforthefirsttimeintheirlives,becausetheybelievedthatthistimemustbedifferent,thattheirvoicescouldbethatdifference.itstheanswerspokenbyyoungandold,richandpoor,democratandrepublican,black,white,hispanic,asian,nativeamerican,gay,straight,disabledandnotdisabled.americanswhosentamessagetotheworldthatwehaveneverbeenjustacollectionofindividualsoracollectionofredstatesandbluestates.weare,andalwayswillbe,theunitedstatesofamerica.itstheanswerthatledthosewhovebeentoldforsolongbysomanytobecynicalandfearfulanddoubtfulaboutwhatwecanachievetoputtheirhandsonthearcofhistoryandbenditoncemoretowardthehopeofabetterday.itsbeenalongtimeing,buttonight,becauseofwhatwedidonthisdateinthiselectionatthisdefiningmomentchangehasetoamerica.alittlebitearlierthisevening,ireceivedanextraordinarilygraciouscallfromsen.mccain.sen.mccainfoughtlongandhardinthiscampaign.andhesfoughtevenlongerandharderforthecountrythatheloves.hehasenduredsacrificesforamericathatmostofuscannotbegintoimagine.wearebetterofffortheservicerenderedbythisbraveandselflessleader.icongratulatehim;icongratulategov.palinforallthattheyveachieved.andilookforwardtoworkingwiththemtorenewthisnationspromiseinthemonthsahead.iwanttothankmypartnerinthisjourney,amanwhocampaignedfromhisheart,andspokeforthemenandwomenhegrewupwithonthestreetsofscrantonandrodewithonthetrainhometodelaware,thevicepresident-electoftheunitedstates,joebiden.andiwouldnotbestandingheretonightwithouttheunyieldingsupportofmybestfriendforthelast16yearstherockofourfamily,theloveofmylife,thenationsnextfirstladymichelleobama.sashaandmaliailoveyoubothmorethanyoucanimagine.andyouhaveearnedthenewpuppythatsingwithustothenewwhitehouse.andwhileshesnolongerwithus,iknowmygrandmotherswatching,alongwiththefamilythatmademewhoiam.imissthemtonight.iknowthatmydebttothemisbeyondmeasure.tomysistermaya,mysisteralma,allmyotherbrothersandsisters,thankyousomuchforallthesupportthatyouvegivenme.iamgratefultothem.andtomycampaignmanager,davidplouffe,theunsungheroofthiscampaign,whobuiltthebestthebestpoliticalcampaign,ithink,inthehistoryoftheunitedstatesofamerica.tomychiefstrategistdavidaxelrodwhosbeenapartnerwithmeeverystepoftheway.tothebestcampaignteameverassembledinthehistoryofpoliticsyoumadethishappen,andiamforevergratefulforwhatyouvesacrificedtogetitdone.butaboveall,iwillneverforgetwhothisvictorytrulybelongsto.itbelongstoyou.itbelongstoyou.iwasneverthelikeliestcandidateforthisoffice.wedidntstartwithmuchmoneyormanyendorsements.ourcampaignwasnothatchedinthehallsofwashington.itbeganinthebackyardsofdesmoinesandthelivingroomsofconcordandthefrontporchesofcharleston.itwasbuiltbyworkingmenandwomenwhodugintowhatlittlesavingstheyhadtogive$5and$10and$20tothecause.itgrewstrengthfromtheyoungpeoplewhorejectedthemythoftheirgenerationsapathywholefttheirhomesandtheirfamiliesforjobsthatofferedlittlepayandlesssleep.itdrewstrengthfromthenot-so-youngpeoplewhobravedthebittercoldandscorchingheattoknockondoorsofperfectstrangers,andfromthemillionsofamericanswhovolunteeredandorganizedandprovedthatmorethantwocenturieslateragovernmentofthepeople,bythepeople,andforthepeoplehasnotperishedfromtheearth.thisisyourvictory.andiknowyoudidntdothisjusttowinanelection.andiknowyoudidntdoitforme.youdiditbecauseyouunderstandtheenormityofthetaskthatliesahead.forevenaswecelebratetonight,weknowthechallengesthattomorrowwillbringarethegreatestofourlifetimetwowars,aplanetinperil,theworstfinancialcrisisinacentury.evenaswestandheretonight,weknowtherearebraveamericanswakingupinthedesertsofiraqandthemountainsofafghanistantorisktheirlivesforus.therearemothersandfatherswhowilllieawakeafterthechildrenfallasleepandwonderhowtheyllmakethemortgageorpaytheirdoctorsbillsorsaveenoughfortheirchildscollegeeducation.theresnewenergytoharness,newjobstobecreated,newschoolstobuild,andthreatstomeet,alliancestorepair.theroadaheadwillbelong.ourclimbwillbesteep.wemaynotgetthereinoneyearoreveninoneterm.but,america,ihaveneverbeenmorehopefulthaniamtonightthatwewillgetthere.ipromiseyou,weasapeoplewillgetthere.therewillbesetbacksandfalsestarts.therearemanywhowontagreewitheverydecisionorpolicyimakeaspresident.andweknowthegovernmentcantsolveeveryproblem.butiwillalwaysbehonestwithyouaboutthechallengesweface.iwilllistentoyou,especiallywhenwedisagree.and,aboveall,iwillaskyoutojoinintheworkofremakingthisnation,theonlywayitsbeendoneinamericafor221yearsblockbyblock,brickbybrick,callousedhandbycallousedhand.whatbegan21monthsagointhedepthsofwintercannotendonthisautumnnight.thisvictoryaloneisnotthechangeweseek.itisonlythechanceforustomakethatchange.andthatcannothappenifwegobacktothewaythingswere.itcanthappenwithoutyou,withoutanewspiritofservice,anewspiritofsacrifice.soletussummonanewspiritofpatriotism,ofresponsibility,whereeachofusresolvestopitchinandworkharderandlookafternotonlyourselvesbuteachother.letusrememberthat,ifthisfinancialcrisistaughtusanything,itsthatwecannothaveathrivingwallstreetwhilemainstreetsuffers.inthiscountry,weriseorfallasonenation,asonepeople.letsresistthetemptationtofallbackonthesamepartisanshipandpettinessandimmaturitythathaspoisonedourpoliticsforsolong.letsrememberthatitwasamanfromthisstatewhofirstcarriedthebanneroftherepublicanpartytothewhitehouse,apartyfoundedonthevaluesofself-relianceandindividuallibertyandnationalunity.thosearevaluesthatweallshare.andwhile
