lyndonbainesjohnson:thegreatsocietypresidenthatcher,governorromney,senatorsmcnamaraandhart,congressmenmeaderandstaebler,andothermembersofthefinemichigandelegation,membersofthegraduatingclass,myfellowamericans:itisagreatpleasuretobeheretoday.thisuniversityhasbeencoeducationalsince1870,butidonotbelieveitwasonthebasisofyouracplishmentsthatadetroithighschoolgirlsaid(andiquote),inchoosingacollege,youfirsthavetodecidewhetheryouwantacoeducationalschooloraneducationalschool.well,wecanfindbothhereatmichigan,althoughperhapsatdifferenthours.icameoutheretodayveryanxioustomeetthemichiganstudentwhosefathertoldafriendofminethathissonseducationhadbeenarealvalue.itstoppedhismotherfrombraggingabouthim.ihaveetodayfromtheturmoilofyourcapitaltothetranquilityofyourcampustospeakaboutthefutureofyourcountry.thepurposeofprotectingthelifeofournationandpreservingthelibertyofourcitizensistopursuethehappinessofourpeople.oursuccessinthatpursuitisthetestofoursuccessasanation.foracenturywelaboredtosettleandtosubdueacontinent.forhalfacenturywecalleduponunboundedinventionanduntiringindustrytocreateanorderofplentyforallofourpeople.thechallengeofthenexthalfcenturyiswhetherwehavethewisdomtousethatwealthtoenrichandelevateournationallife,andtoadvancethequalityofouramericancivilization.yourimaginationandyourinitiativeandyourindignationwilldeterminewhetherwebuildasocietywhereprogressistheservantofourneeds,orasocietywhereoldvaluesandnewvisionsareburiedunderunbridledgrowth.forinyourtimewehavetheopportunitytomovenotonlytowardtherichsocietyandthepowerfulsociety,butupwardtothegreatsociety.thegreatsocietyrestsonabundanceandlibertyforall.itdemandsanendtopovertyandracialinjustice,towhichwearetotallymittedinourtime.butthatisjustthebeginning.thegreatsocietyisaplacewhereeverychildcanfindknowledgetoenrichhismindandtoenlargehistalents.itisaplacewhereleisureisawelechancetobuildandreflect,notafearedcauseofboredomandrestlessness.itisaplacewherethecityofmanservesnotonlytheneedsofthebodyandthedemandsofmercebutthedesireforbeautyandthehungerformunity.itisaplacewheremancanrenewcontactwithnature.itisaplacewhichhonorscreationforitsownsakeandforwhatisaddstotheunderstandingoftherace.itisaplacewheremenaremoreconcernedwiththequalityoftheirgoalsthanthequantityoftheirgoods.butmostofall,thegreatsocietyisnotasafeharbor,arestingplace,afinalobjective,afinishedwork.itisachallengeconstantlyrenewed,beckoningustowardadestinywherethemeaningofourlivesmatchesthemarvelousproductsofourlabor.soiwanttotalktoyoutodayaboutthreeplaceswherewebegintobuildthegreatsociety-inourcities,inourcountryside,andinourclassrooms.manyofyouwilllivetoseetheday,perhaps50yearsfromnow,whentherewillbe400millionamericans-four-fifthsoftheminurbanareas.intheremainderofthiscenturyurbanpopulationwilldouble,citylandwilldouble,andwewillhavetobuildhomesandhighwaysandfacilitiesequaltoallthosebuiltsincethiscountrywasfirstsettled.sointhenext40yearswemustre-buildtheentireurbanunitedstates.aristotlesaid:menetogetherincitiesinordertolive,buttheyremaintogetherinordertolivethegoodlife.itisharderandhardertolivethegoodlifeinamericancitiestoday.thecatalogofillsislong:thereisthedecayofthecentersandthedespoilingofthesuburbs.thereisnotenoughhousingforourpeopleortransportationforourtraffic.openlandisvanishingandoldlandmarksareviolated.worstofallexpansioniserodingthesepreciousandtimehonoredvaluesofmunitywithneighborsandmunionwithnature.thelossofthesevaluesbreedslonelinessandboredomandindifference.andoursocietywillneverbegreatuntilourcitiesaregreat.todaythefrontierofimaginationandinnovationisinsidethosecitiesandnotbeyondtheirborders.newexperimentsarealreadygoingon.itwillbethetaskofyourgenerationtomaketheamericancityaplacewherefuturegenerationswille,notonlytolive,buttolivethegoodlife.andiunderstandthatifistayedheretonightiwouldseethatmichiganstudentsarereallydoingtheirbesttolivethegoodlife.thisistheplacewherethepeacecorpswasstarted.itisinspiringtoseehowallofyou,whileyouareinthiscountry,aretryingsohardtoliveatthelevelofthepeople.asecondplacewherewebegintobuildthegreatsocietyisinourcountryside.wehavealwayspridedourselvesonbeingnotonlyamericathestrongandamericathefree,butamericathebeautiful.todaythatbeautyisindanger.thewaterwedrink,thefoodweeat,theveryairthatwebreathe,arethreatenedwithpollution.ourparksareovercrowded,ourseashoresoverburdened.greenfieldsanddenseforestsaredisappearing.afewyearsagoweweregreatlyconcernedabouttheuglyamerican.todaywemustacttopreventanuglyamerica.foroncethebattleislost,onceournaturalsplendorisdestroyed,itcanneverberecaptured.andoncemancannolongerwalkwithbeautyorwonderatnaturehisspiritwillwitherandhissustenancebewasted.athirdplacetobuildthegreatsocietyisintheclassroomsofamerica.thereyourchildrensliveswillbeshaped.oursocietywillnotbegreatuntileveryyoungmindissetfreetoscanthefarthestreachesofthoughtandimagination.wearestillfarfromthatgoal.today,8millionadultamericans,morethantheentirepopulationofmichigan,havenotfinished5yearsofschool.nearly20millionhavenotfinished8yearsofschool.nearly54million-morethanonequarterofallamerica-havenotevenfinishedhighschool.eachyearmorethan100,000highschoolgraduates,withprovedability,donotentercollegebecausetheycannotaffordit.andifwecannoteducatetodaysyouth,whatwillwedoin1970whenelementaryschoolenrollmentwillbe5milliongreaterthan1960?andhighschoolenrollmentwillriseby5million.andcollegeenrollmentwillincreasebymorethan3million.inmanyplaces,classroomsareovercrowdedandcurriculaareoutdated.mostofourqualifiedteachersareunderpaidandmanyofourpaidteachersareunqualified.sowemustgiveeverychildaplacetositandateachertolearnfrom.povertymustnotbeabartolearning,andlearningmustofferanescapefrompoverty.butmoreclassroomsandmoreteachersarenotenough.wemustseekaneducationalsystemwhichgrowsinexcellenceasitgrowsinsize.thismeansbettertrainingforourteachers.itmeanspreparingyouthtoenjoytheirhoursofleisureaswellastheirhoursoflabor.itmeansexploringnewtechniquesofteaching,tofindnewwaystostimulatetheloveoflearningandthecapacityforcreation.thesearethreeofthecentralissuesofthegreatsociety.whileourgovernmenthasmanyprogramsdirectedatthoseissues,idonotpretendthatwehavethefullanswertothoseproblems.butidopromisethis:wearegoingtoassemblethebestthoughtandthebroadestknowledgefromallovertheworldtofindthoseanswersforamerica.iintendtoestablishworkinggroupstoprepareaseriesofwhitehouseconferencesandmeetings-onthecities,onnaturalbeauty,onthequalityofeducation,andonotheremergingchallenges.andfromthesemeetingsandfromthisinspirationandfromthesestudieswewillbegintosetourcoursetowardthegreatsociety.thesolutiontotheseproblemsdoesnotrestonamassiveprograminwashington,norcanitrelysolelyonthestrainedresourcesoflocalauthority.theyrequireustocreatenewconceptsofcooperation,acreativefederalism,betweenthenationalcapitalandtheleadersoflocalmunities.woodrowwilsononcewrote:everymansentoutfromhisuniversityshouldbeamanofhisnationaswellasamanofhistime.withinyourlifetimepowerfulforces,alreadyloosed,willtakeustowardawayoflifebeyondtherealmofourexperience,almostbeyondtheboundsofourimagination.forbetterorforworse,yourgenerationhasbeenappointedbyhistorytodealwiththoseproblemsandtoleadamericatowardanewage.youhavethechanceneverbeforeaffordedtoanypeopleinanyage.youcanhelpbuildasocietywherethedemandsofmorality,andtheneedsofthespirit,canberealizedinthelifeofthenation.so,willyoujoininthebattletogiveeverycitizenthefullequalitywhichgodenjoinsandthelawrequires,whateverhisbelief,orrace,orthecolorofhisskin?willyoujoininthebattle*togiveeverycitizenanescapef
