e $ f f i c d t c o u r o f t h et h e s i s 摘要 委婉语是英语中很常见的语言现象，也是一种文化现象。通过对英语委婉语 的语用学研究，将有助于人们在言语交际中更好地理解并运用委婉语。 本文试从语用学的角度以合作原则和面子论为基础对英语委婉语进行分析， 从而说明人们在言语交际中使用英语委婉语，故意违反合作原则，保护交际中某 一方或多方的面子( 特别是“正面子”) 不受损害。 文章分为五章： 第一章的介绍提出了论文研究的假设、理论基础、方法以及论文的结构。 第二章阐述委婉语的定义和构成、与禁忌语的关系和不同的分类方式，并简 要回顾英语委婉语的历史和发展演变的规则。 第三章讨论英语委婉语的语用特征。本章首先指出了委婉使用的动机，包括 避讳、礼貌、美化和掩饰。然后具体讨论了委婉语的四个主要特点，即：普遍性、 文化特定性、模糊不明性和历时性。
