索尔贝娄是继海明威和福克纳之后美国最重要的小说家之一，他曾于1 9 7 6 年获 得诺贝尔文学奖。索尔贝娄生创作了很多作品，只争朝夕是其中的一部代表作， 具有重要的意义。评论家们认为它是贝娄的一部杰出的著作，在很多方面都具有代表性。 小说意味深长，引人深思。 索尔呗娄小说中的主人公们都在寻求这样一个问题的答案：在当今社会一个好人怎 样才能生活得下去呢? 只争朝夕这部作品也同样将其焦点集中在这个问题上。在这 部作品中作者为我们创造了威尔赫姆这样一个生存在金钱至上的现代社会里，却始终保 留着善性及追求“善的人物形象。多年来很多研究者针对威尔赫姆身上所反映出的乐 观主义、人道主义、爱等精神进行分析研究，其中也不乏使用伦理批评方法来帮助分析 的，但他们的研究的内容很多都还比较宽泛，没有深入到较细致、清晰的层面来分析。 本文将利用伦理批评方法对只争朝夕这部作品所体现出的“善 的主题进行细致的 研读，挖掘威尔赫姆这个现代悲剧性人物身上的“善 根源和表现，探讨他在拜金主义 社会成为一个失败者的原因，及作品中所反映出的“善”的希望，从而揭示出“善 及 善良的人在日渐无良的拜金主义社会中的窘境，同时也通过男主人公身处困境却善性不 灭，希望不灭这一精神指出“善”是伦理学中的重要论题，只争朝夕这部作品所反 映出的男主人公的善为：公正，人道，幸福，贵生，诚实，孝顺，体谅，自尊，勇敢， 乐观，心胸开阔，公正，宽容，怜悯，仁慈，同情，爱，报答，宽恕等。善是根源于人 性之中的力量，人性不灭，善也将永存。人们应该固守自身之“善疗，改正身上的非善 之处。拥有了“善 人类及人类社会就会有希望。 围绕着只争朝夕中的“菩 这一主题，本论文从六个部分对其进行探讨。在导 言部分主要介绍作者索尔贝娄的生平、著作、创作思想、写作主题和风格；介绍评论 者们对只争朝夕这部作品的评价，作品的内容概要，写作风格及技巧：同时也概要 地介绍了伦理学各分支及它们对“善 的阐释。论文的第一章从伦理学，伦理思想对西 方思想的影响，作者的创作思想，如犹太思想、人道主义等思想论述威尔赫姆“善 的 根源。而第二章主要探讨威尔赫姆“善 的表现。从威尔赫姆与其父亲、妻子、汤母金 及与作品中其他人物的关系中挖掘他身上的“善”的表现。第三章论述威尔赫姆在拜金 主义世界沦为“失败者 的原因。主要从社会因素、作者思想、威尔赫姆的“善 在拜 金主义世界中的窘境及威尔赫姆本身的缺点角度来论述。第四章探讨作品中所体现出的 “善 的希望。主要从作者本人的犹太思想、人道主义思想、乐观主义精神以及作品之 中和结尾处所体现的希望方面来探讨。论文的结论部分是对整篇论文的总结，阐述论文 的意义。
