奥尼尔对古希腊悲剧的继承首先表现在戏剧主题方面。古希腊悲剧的一个鲜明 主题就是命运支配人的生死祸福，人类始终摆脱不了命运的安排。奥尼尔在戏剧创 作中借鉴了这种古希腊悲剧命运观，他戏剧作品中的不少主人公像古希腊悲剧中的 人物一样受命运的捉弄，无法逃脱命运的安排。 其次，在戏剧情节方面，奥尼尔也借用了古希腊悲剧。奥尼尔利用古希腊悲剧 她推陈出新，发展和变革戏剧，在一定程度上，可以说，超越了古希腊悲剧。 奥尼尔对希腊悲剧的变革首先表现在对主题的挖掘上。古希腊由于知识的局 限，往往把悲剧的根源归结为外部和异己的力量。而奥尼尔则不同，他认为，“上 帝死了”之后，悲剧的根源更多的来自于社会和人本身内在的东西。奥尼尔用一生 去探寻造成悲剧的深层原因。他发现，现代人的悲剧来自于个体挣脱束缚的冲动的
