十分成熟。国内的研究大约是从过去的二、三十年开始的。大多数学者都使用宗教 思想、结构主义、女性主义、心理分析等方法来解读她的作品，然而，对于其小说 中包含的丰富的自然描写与人类活动的关系却大多忽略了，因此也就为读者打开了 一扇新的视窗生态批评。 生态批评作为一种批评潮流，起始于2 0 世纪7 0 、8 0 年代，其发源地在美国。 1 9 7 4 年，约瑟夫米克在生存的戏剧：文学生态学研究中提出“文学生态学 的概念，主张批评应当细致的发掘文学对人类行为和自然环境的影响。在短短的几 十年间，生态批评迅速发展到世界范围，成为很有影响力的文学批评潮流。 笔者试图从生态批评的视角，通过分析佛洛斯河磨坊中丰富的自然环境描 写，如：佛洛斯河及红洼地的荒野、铎尔蔻特磨坊和大洪水，来发掘乔治艾略特 的自然观。在工业革命的冲击下，整个英国社会发生了翻天覆地的变化，过去传统 的生活方式都逐渐篆刻上工业化的烙印。为了追逐更高的经济效益，人们不再固守 和自然和谐共处的原则。社会变革时期的焦虑和不安影响了英国社会的每个成员，艾 略特对经济转型也有着深刻的忧虑和彷徨。磨坊的所有权转移就是工业革命的后果， 它代表了当时英国社会工业化对普通自耕农生活的作用。在小说中，艾略特正是以 题，力图以分析乔治艾略特的自然观来达到提出可能解答的目的。作为一个以乡 村普通人命运为题材的作家，她十分关注在工业革命影响下的乡村和人们。一方面， 她十分清楚，工业化的潮流无法遏制。另一方面，她又时刻缅怀过去的人和自然和 谐共处的传统生活。她给玛姬安排了一叶方舟，幻想能在这个大势之下，保留方寸 之地，但并没有成功，只能和流逝了过去、现在时光的佛洛斯河合为一体。艾略特
