摘要 摘要 语言作为人类思想交流和信息传递最为基本的符号，是经历了千万年的不断 演化而来的。这种进化伴随着人类的使用并无休止的意思。千万年来，无数学者 对语言的产生与发展也津津乐道，并极力探求语言符号的形式和意义之间存在着 何种关系。 追溯语言研究的历史，它总是和哲学紧密相连。古希腊哲学家们关于语言的 普遍问题的争论就是语言是自然性的还是规约性的，这两种观点在柏拉图的克 拉底鲁斯里讨论的最多。克拉底鲁斯认为，语词和它们所代表的事物之间的关 系是自然形成的，语词是存在于人类外部的实在所赋予的，它们间存在着内在的 联系。赫莫根尼则持完全相反的观点，认为语言是通过约定而形成的，所以语词 和它们所代表的事物之间的关系是任意的，语词的选择是人的意志所决定的。自 此，学者们对于语言符号与实体关系的争论就一直延续至今。期问有名实之争， 理性主义和经验主义之争，直至当前非常激烈的关于语言符号任意性和象似性的 争论。索绪尔作为现代语言学之父，提出了语言的任意性原则必然影响深远。任 意性长期以来作为语言符号的基本原则也被广泛认可。但是自皮尔斯符号理论中 的象似性被引用到语言学中来，也随着研究者对语言象似性的不断深入和了解。 近几十年来学者们对任意性原则提出了异议，甚而有的学者对象似性更是推崇备 至，欲对任意性原则取而代之。 本文在通览相关语言理论发展的基础上，简要阐述索绪尔的语言任意性理论 并通过一直以来语言学家对这一理论的理解和评价，综合皮尔斯的象似性理论及 象似性存在依据得出语词的形成和发展是语言任意性和象似性原则共同作用的 结果。关于语言是任意性或是象似性的争论基本上是关于一个瓶子半瓶满和半瓶 空的争论，它们是矛盾的统一体。两者相辅相成共同对语词符号的选择产生作用： 任意性不是孤立地无拘无束天马行空地存在着，语言也不是只受到任意性原则的 单向支配，任意性只能在理据性所规定的范围内运作，离开理据性，任意性将变 的毫无价值；同时，理据性又以任意性为生存条件，有了任意性才使语言符号的 理据生成具备了广阔的选择余地，才使语言不断丰富不断发展，离开了任意性语 言就犹如枯木，毫无生机，更准确地说，语言将不成为语言。索绪尔事实上也隐 i l l ! ! 型! ! ! ! 竺竺! 竺型堡! 壁! ! ! ! ! p 竺! ! ! 约论述了两者的关系，“一切都是不能论证的语言是不存在的，一切都可以论证 的语言，在定义上也是不能设想的。在最少的组织性和最少的任意性这两个极端 之间，我们可以找到一切可能的差异。各种语言经常包括两类要素根本上任 意的和相对的可以论证的但是比例极不相同，这是我们进行语言分类时可能 考虑的一个很重要的特点。”石安石也有论述：语言符号的任意性普遍存在，可 论证性大量存在，都是事实。只是各有各的内容和范围，并行不悖。承认语言符 号的任意性并不以牺牲对方为代价，理据性和任意性的互动关系决定了它们共同 成为语言同等重要的自组织原则。偏左或偏右的看法都是不足取的，所以与其说 语言是任意性的还是象似性，还不如说某个或某类语词或语言是任意性的成分多 些还是象似性的成分多些。 关于语言任意性和象似性的研究无论在国内还是在国外犹如过江之鲫，索绪 尔本身思想深邃，语言学内涵极为丰富，同时他又是一个不断革新的人，思想常 向各方面发展致使语言学界出现了对其理论的理解和解释也是形态各异，争议颇 多。因此单凭他的某些言语来定位其语言学思想就难免有点断章取义之嫌了。本 文试从语词符号的角度来重新审视语言符号任意性原则及其与象似性的关系。 关键词：语言符号；任意性：象似性：语词选择 a
