摘要托马斯哈代不仅通过他的作品表现了他所熟悉的威塞克斯的现实生活，而且将威塞克斯作为他探索人类生存状况的出发点。他将小说中的主人公的个人经历同人类的命运联系在一起，探索人类存在的主要问题。本文在吸收前人研究成果的基础之上，探讨了他的卡斯特桥市长中的存在主义主题。虽然哈代并不是f 偃格意义上的存在主义作家，但他的小说体现出存在主义的理念，通过对生命深层体验的方式来展现、关注个体存在的价值。本文除了导论和结语之外由四章构成。第一章简要论述存在主义的基本理念及其文学作品经常涉及的三个主题：异化，疏离与绝望，寻求实现自我，同时还分析了哈代存在主义思想的形成过程。第二章主要从人与自然，人与社会的关系，论述哈代如何在卡斯特桥市长这部小说中建构了一个全面异化的世界：卡斯特桥。第三章着力围绕着小说中人与人之间的疏离和隔阂，以及人物的悲剧命运展开论述，如亨查德和苏珊以金钱维系的婚姻，商人伐尔弗德因一味追求利益而陷入疏离，露西塔受传统道德束缚的悲剧命运。第四章就小说中的在异化的社会罩个人难以实现自我这一主题展开论述。卡斯特桥的两座桥有着深刻的象征意义，它们分别象征着两种生存态度。一种是安于现状地生活在这个异化的世界，另一种则是在异化的世界里积极地寻求实现自我，即使是死亡，它也同样体现着自我选择的深刻价值。文本认为虽然主人公亨查德以失败告终，但他在面临困境时做出的种种抗争所体现出的精神还是值得肯定的。小说流露出对生存痛苦的隐忍，更关注人在异化世界中寻求实现自我的意义。关键词：异化；疏离；绝望；自我实现a
