One of the main characteristics of this teaching material is to stimulate students English learning interests and to develop students language ability, thinking ability. “My First Day at Junior High” is the second period of this unit. This text is a diary, in which Li Kangs first day at his high school, his thoughts and feelings are all showed. After learning this diary, students can express their thoughts and feelings about their first day at senior high school. II. Teaching Objectives1. Language Objectives(1) New words and phrases: embarrassed, asas, nothing like, look forward to.(2) Important sentence patterns: Every room has a computer with a special screen, almost as big as a cinema screen. Im looking forward to doing it.2. Ability ObjectivesEnable students to develop reading skills (skimming for the main idea of the text and scanning for specific information, summarizing information)3. Moral Objectives(1) To enhance students awareness of positive attitude towards the new knowledge of senior high.(2) To call for students attention to the different school life between junior high school and senior high school.III. Important Points and Difficult Points 1. Use skimming and scanning to understand the passage exactly. 2. To make the students know how to express the main idea of this text.3. How to analyze the text and grasp the main idea of the text4. To compare Junior High school with Senior High school.V. Teaching Methods1. Comparison, Fast Reading, Careful ReadingThrough comparing their junior high schools with senior high schools, the teacher should try to make students involve in the study and learn by doing. Meanwhile the teacher should guide them to study to help them develop learning skills, and to be active in thinking.2. Teaching Aids: projector, computer and blackboardVI. Learning MethodsIts important to teach students “How to learn” not “what to learn”. So, teachers must help students to build up their own way to study. Try to motivate students and make the class more active. It is also important for the students to communicate with their classmates actively, share their opinions and discuss how to solve problems. Based on the above, I will encourage students to use the following methods:(1) Autonomous learning method;(2) Communicative learning method.VII. Teaching Procedures Step I Lead-in (5mins)First, I will greet my students. Through greeting, teachers can get closer to the students, and get students at ease in class. Also its a good way to call for students attention. Then I will ask students to talk about their first day at senior high. Step II Fast Reading (8mins)In this part, first I will ask students to read this diary quickly and tell me what the main idea of the diary is. Then I will invite some students to speak out. This may help students improve their skimming skill as well as speaking. And then I will ask them to find the answers to the following three questions: 1. “What is the main difference between Li Kangs junior high school and senior high school?” 2. “What are the two things the English teacher thinks important to do in class?” and 3. “What are the two things the English teacher thinks students should improve?” This may help students improve their scanning skill.Step III Careful Reading (25mins)1. I will ask students to divide the diary into 4 parts to help them understand the organization of the article.2. I will guide them to read the diary one part by one part. This may help students make a good understanding about this diary.3. During reading, I will pick out the important words, phrases and patterns and introduce them to the students. For example, in teaching the pattern “asas”, first I will give the meaning to them; then I will give them an example to understand it better.Step IV Summary (2mins)In this part, it is better to make a conclusion of what have talked in the class. In this way, it can remind the students what they have learnt and also will help them understand the text better.Step V Homework (2mins)It is necessary to ask them to do some homework. I will ask them to read the diary as many as they can and finish exercise 4 to 6 in their book. And I will ask them to write a text about the difference between their junior high and senior high, maybe can use the new words and language points in their text.VIII. Blackboard DesignBlackboard design is very important for teaching. Some difficult points and important points will be written on the blackboard to achieve visual effects.
