摘要 摘要 语言中的词汇是一个动态的开放系统，不断吸收外来词是语言丰富和发展的重 要途径。一个民族在与其它民族交流过程中，不断吸收其它民族语言成分来丰富自 己的词汇，是各种语言词汇发展的一种共同现象，即一种语言为保持自身活力而必 需的手段。外来词是在各种语言中都普遍存在的词汇成分。不同语言相互吸收外来 词是在文化和语言接触过程中发生的。在语言接触中，各种语言都从英语中吸收了 大量词语，英语也从各种语言中吸收了大量词语。英语中还存在不少汉语借词，则 更能说明语言动态发展的社会性和当今世界日益突出的国际性。因此，语言学界对 f 英语中汉语借词的研究已有不少成果。但是，在中国，对借词的研究还相对薄弱。 因此本文将以前人关于借词的定义、英语中汉语借词研究规则、方法、范围以及类 型的理论为基础，选取英国传教士兼语言学家麦都思的福建方言字典一书中所 收录的具有中国文化特色的借词为例子，分析麦都思是如何运用音译、意译以及半 音半意的方法来翻译这些汉语借词的，为今后进二步研究提供较为系统的参考资源。 关键词：借词； 麦都思；音译；意译；半音半意 中文文摘 中文文摘 “借词”也叫“外来语”或者“外来词”，是词汇扩大和发展的重要组成部分。 社会的发展，人们思想的表达都是通过语言来实现的，各国之间的相互交流也不例 外。因此，大多数语言中都存在着相当多的借词。英语中，借词更是占据了很大的 比重。 由于从其它语言。中借用词语是丰富和发展本族语言词汇的重要途径，因此借词 的翻译是不可避免的。本文在前人研究借词的相关理论基础上，从英国传教士兼语 言学家麦都思所著的福建方言字典一书中选取了大量的例子来分析麦都思在1 9 世纪初是如何翻译这些具有浓厚中国传统文化色彩的词语和词组的。 本文共分七个章节。 第一章为绪论，介绍本文的研究背景和理论基础，以及简要的文献回顾，对国 内近二十年来关于借词研究进行综述。 第二章介绍借词的定义，对比了国内外对借词定义的界定。在国外，只要是借 自别的语言的词语就算作是借词，国内则分为狭义和广义两派。主张狭义定义借词 的认为只有把音和义都借过来的词刁。是借词，即一般所说的音译词；而主张广义 观点的则以更广阔的视野来看待借词，认为不论语音上的模仿还是语义上的模仿， 新词都反映了外来语言文化的影响。 第三章从源语言以及翻译策略角度来分析英语中的汉语借词现象。第一部分总 结了英语中外来词以及英语中的汉语外来词的源语分布。英语中的汉语借词由多种 词汇组成，这些词汇来源不尽相同，包括官话，粤语，闽方言及其它汉语方言。其 中一些词汇在被借用入英语之前常通过另一种语言来传播，如曰语、法语、洋泾滨 英语等，但通常是日语。第二部分介绍了中外学者关于借用外来词所用翻译策略的 各种分类。 第四章概述了英语中汉语借词的历史，以及麦都思的福建方言字典的写作 背景，阐述了福建方言字典的主要内容以及成书原因。福建方言字典是基督 教新教传教士所编的第一本闽南语字典，也是目前存世的第二本罗马字拼音的闽南 语字典。这本书以同时期的一位中国方言学家谢秀兰所著的十五音一书为基础， i n 中文文摘 用罗马字对字典中词语的方言读音注音，对后世闽南语字典的编纂有开创之功。 第五章是全文的重点，运用音译法、意译法和半音半意法三种翻译策略来分析 麦都思是如何翻译字典中那些具有中国独有文化特色的词汇和词组的。在该字典中， 一些现在常见的采用音译的汉语借词当时在字典中已经广泛使用，如t e a , m a n d a r i n ， ， s i l k ，g i n s e n g ，c h i n a ，c o n f u c i u s 等。多数词语的翻译采用了意译的方法，意译又分为 纯意译和直译亦或仿译，其中福建的一些专有地名多采用直译的方式。而一些朝代 名称和少数人名则采用半音半意的方式。 第六章主要介绍了福建方言字典的音系性质，同时对字典中具有中国特色 的借词进行分类，并从每一类借词中选取部分作为例证。每个例子先列出词条，后 将福建省漳浦县闽南方言的罗马字注音分别列出，并在 内用国际音标标出读音； 若词条中有文读音和俗读音的区别者，在它们之间以“”隔开；继而在国际音标 之后再把该词条翻译成英语。 最后一章是全文的总结。借词在跨文化交际中起着纽带和桥梁的作用。英语中 的汉语借词有利于西方对中国文明的了解，加大了中国文化的影响，进一步扩大了 中西方之间的交流，丰富了英语词汇，同时反映了英语对外来词很强的吸收同化能 力，以及英美文化的多元性，开放性以及对外来文化的敏感性和融合能力。在借词
