摘要 沃尔特惠特曼被认为是美国最伟大的诗人之一，他的作品草 叶集被公认为是美国文学的代表作之一。而诗人生都在不断地扩 充、修订及重新出版草叶集。 在对惠特曼的草叶集进行深入的文本研读中，本文作者发 现惠特曼诗歌中有一个贯穿始终的中心“自我”，是研究惠特曼 不可忽略的方面。草叶集就像一部美国社会的百科全书，为研究“自 我”提供了非常好的文本。 “自我 是一个古老而又现代的概念，它自人类文明产生便出现， 又经常列在哲学家、作家、心理学家等着重讨论的主题名单上，而且 这一概念及如何实现它随着时间的变化而变化。几个世纪以来，很多 学者从不同的角度定义诠释“自我 ，如弗洛伊德、荣格、费希特、 希金斯、西格尔、福柯等。惠特曼的“自我 在其作品中有着重要的 意义，是他诗歌的“组织原则”，有着独特的蕴含。惠特曼草叶集 中的“自我包含三个层面：“个体自我 、“美国自我”、“普遍自我 。 这三个层面的“自我 自成一个整体，不可分割。每一个层面都有自 己的独特性，他们有时互相矛盾，有时又互相补充，共同构成了草 叶集中完整的“自我 。 本文即分三个章节从这三个方面探究草叶集中的“自我。 第一章通过“肉体自我”和“精神自我 以及二者的结合来分析“个 体自我 。不同于清教主义中精神和肉体永远处于矛盾冲突之中，也 不同于超验主义所认为的精神绝对高于肉体，在惠特曼的“个体自我 中，“肉体自我”和“精神自我 是平等的，只有通过“肉体自我 和“精神自我的完美结合才能实现“个体自我 。这一章的诠释将 向读者展示惠特曼第一个层面的“自我”。第二章从自由、平等、民 主方面探究诗集中体现的“美国自我 。这三个方面在一定程度上反 映了当时美国社会急待构建的美国特征。当时的美国社会正经历经济 上、文化上及思想上的巨变，惠特曼作为一名美国民族诗人，不可避 免地受到了这种社会及文化背景的影响，因此致力于创造不同于英国 及欧洲文学的一种新型的属于美国自己的文学。草叶集中的“美 国自我 在一定程度上反应了惠特曼的政治思想和对自己祖国的深厚 感情。第三章从两个方面探讨“普遍自我”，即对生命和自然的热爱， 从而将惠特曼的“自我 提升到一个更高更严格的层面。惠特曼的“普 遍自我”体现了他对全人类及自然万物的爱。 从“自我 角度分析和解读草叶集，是本文写作的尝试，并 通过惠特曼的草叶集为读者提供又一种对“自我”的更深的理解。 要抓住惠特曼作品的灵魂，读者必须熟悉并了解惠特曼注重对诗中 “自我 的表达，并为突出“自我”所进行的诗歌语言和形式的创新。 关键词：沃尔特惠特曼；草叶集；自我；个体自我；美国自我； 普遍自我 a b s t r a c t w a l tw h
