摘要 自乔治爱略特步入文坛以来，研究者对于她本人、她的创作思想 及其文学主题意蕴一直有着激烈的争议。米德尔马契中对女性主义 所持的态度一直是爱略特研究的热点。本文试图通过对爱略特经典小说 米德尔马契的分析，探讨作者在作品中如何对男性处于中心、女性 处于边缘地位的传统性别模式进行有效的颠覆。 第一章从解构主义的视角讨论性别二元对立的历史背景及其理论渊 源，结合相关的女性主义理论为阐释米德尔马契在解构性别二元对 立方面所作的贡献提供可行的理论依据。第二章分析小说中男性人物形 象，这些人物在政治、经济、教育领域内的种种挫败表明：爱略特颠覆 传统男性价值观和构建雌雄同体、阴阳互补的男性形象的人格理想，在 这部小说中获得了充分体现。第三章分析小说中的女性人物形象及其对 周围男性所产生的重要影响，爱略特对这些鲜活而又极具人格魅力的女 性人物的艺术塑造表明：突破男女二元对立，寻求男女平等、女中有男、 男中有女的新型女性人格始终是作者小说创作不懈的艺术追求。第四章 探讨米德尔马契的主题意蕴。爱略特这部小说的意义在于它不仅解 构和颠覆了西方社会以男权为中心的性别二元结构，更重要的是它建构 了一种超越男女二元对立的和谐人格。和谐的人格需要男女双方互尊、 互信、互爱、互谅，在相互平等基础上追求充分的自由和独立，构建互 不相害的理想人格。
