AsEnglishmajor,IwasattractedbythesituationalteachingmethodwhenIfirstgotintouchwiththistopic.Iknowthatthisteachingmethodwasdevelopedfromthe1930stothe1960s.Intodaysclassroomteaching,especiallytheEnglishclassroomteaching,itsgettingmoreattentionandapplication.ItsanimportantandusefulwaytolearnEnglishforpupils,middleschoolstudents,evencollegestudents.Thesituationalteachingmethodisnotonlyimportanttostudents,butalsoimportanttothedevelopmentofourEnglishteachingsystem.Itsworthstudyinganddiscussing. BeforeIdecidedtodothisstudy,IhadreadsomeresearchesandthesesaboutthesituationalteachingmethodinEnglishclassroomteaching.Theviewsandstudiesonthistopicarewonderful.Theydescribethisteachingmethodentirelyand deeply.Throughstudyingthesituationalteachingmethod,weknowthatweshouldtakeadvantageofitsmeritsandavoiditsdemeritsinEnglishclassroomteaching. Literaturereview Fromthe19thcenturytillnow,manypeoplehavestudiedthesituationalteachingmethodinEnglishclassroomteaching.TheyallagreethatthisteachingmethodiswonderfulandusefulinbringingstudentsenthusiasmintoEnglishstudy.Andtheydontdenythatithassomeproblems. ZhangGuanghuaiaalecturerofXianRailwayVocationalandTechnicalInstitute.InhisessaySituationTeachingMethodandHigherVocationalEnglishTeaching(xx),heexpresseshisviewpointabouthowshouldteachersusethesituationalteachingmethodinEnglishclassroomteaching.HethinksthatteachersmustspeakEnglishinclasses.Usingtheinterandvariedtrainingaidsisnecessary.SomeEnglishpresentationsorsongswillalsoimprovestudentslearninginterest.Ithinkheisright.Studentslikeactiveandvividcircumstancesratherthanrigidones.Ifteacherscouldusesituationalteachingmethod,studentswillbeethemaincharactersinEnglishlearning. SunLianyingisateacherinDaqingConstructionSecondaryTechnicalSchool.InhisworkAnalysisonSituationalTeachingPracticeinSeniorHighSchoolsEnglishTeaching(xx),heraisessomeissueswhichshouldbepaidmoreattentiontointhesituationalEnglishteaching.Whensettingthesituations, teachersshouldthinkaboutthestudentspracticalknowledgelevelandthespecificlanguageenvironment.Healsothinksthesituationsshouldfitinwiththetextbook.Inmyopinion,itsnotnecessarytomakethesituationsthesameasthetextbook.Withoutthelimitationoftextbook,studentscanlearnmoreinformationfreely. XiaWangisastudentinHunanNormalUniversity.InhisthesisTheResearchoftheSituationalApproachinPrimaryEnglishTeaching(xx),hesummarizessomeproblemsofthesituationalteachingmethodinEnglishclassroomteaching.Oneisthatteachersalwaysthinkthismethodexpendstoomuchtimeandthey wontuseitforlongtime.Theotheristhattheformswhichteachersfavorarenotthesameasthestudents.Ithinkteachersshouldcatertotheneedsofstudentsasfaraspossible.Then,studentswillbeinterestedinlearningEnglish. Researchquestions Thispapertriestoanswerthefollowingquestions: Q1:Whatsthesituationalteachingmethod? Q2:WhatshouldteachersdoinEnglishclassroomteaching? Q3:Whatarethedifferencesbetweenthesituationalteachingmethodandthe traditionalone? Q4:WhycantthesituationalteachingmethodbetheonlymethodinEnglish teaching? Expectedresults Thesituationalteachingmethodhascausedattentionfromthelate19thcentury.Now,inclassroomteaching,especiallyinEnglishclassroomteaching,itisusedmorethanbefore.Peoplehaverealizedthatonlybythiswaycanourstudentslearnontheirowninitiative.Infact,thesituationalteachingmethodisanadvancedteachingmethodwithsomelimitations.Myworkaimstostudyitobjectively.Thoughmoreandmoreteachersrealizetheimportanceofthisteachingmethod,itsstilldifficulttocarryoutineveryEnglishclass.IfwecansolvetheproblemandmakeitfitinwithourEnglishteaching,studentswillsurelylovelearningEnglishandthestudyefficiencywillsurelybepromoted. Everynewteachingmethodshouldbepracticedinrealclasses.ThesituationalteachingmethodinEnglishclassroomteachingisthesame.Studentsarethemaincharactersinclassroomandteachersarejusttheleadingfactors.Throughstudyingonthesituationalteachingmethod,wecanknowthatwhatshouldteachersdoandwhatshouldthestudentsdoinEnglishteachingandlearning.
