摘要 作为美国著名的长篇小说家之一，西奥多德莱塞是维多利亚 时期到当代美国过渡性的代表人物，他见证了美国早期消费社会，其 大部分作品体现了他对消费社会的独特见解。美国悲剧这部半自 传体性质的小说，是他对当代消费理念持困惑态度的最好展示，这种 困惑决定了作品主人公克莱德格里菲思被异化的命运。 根据让鲍德里亚的符号理论，在消费社会，物品或商品除具 有使用价值和交换价值外，社会和消费者还赋予其符号价值。任何物 品，包括身体、工作、闲暇、艺术、文化，都能获得自身的符号价值。 随着消费社会的发展，物品的符号价值获得了一种区分人们社会地位 的能力，它使人们更加注重物品的符号价值而非使用价值。人们在追 求符号价值的过程中进入一个虚幻的世界，渐渐丧失了他们的主动 权，最终沦为符号的奴隶，灵魂异化。美国悲剧中异化的克莱德格
