摘要 汉字作为表意文字，其构形与表意密切相关，是一种“望文生义”、“形入 心通 的平面文字。英文则属音素文字范畴，以表意为主，它形不写意而写音， 是一种“听音辨义”、“意入心通的线性文字。本文通过由汉字形象推理、现代 英语中的单词象形痕迹判断、考古挖掘的发现为字母提供了佐证和英语单词是可 以象形分析等五个依据来说明英语字母是象形的，对英语2 6 个字母的象形意义 作了较全面的探讨，并以具体的实例分析说明这些象形意义在单词记忆中的应 用。然而，在英语作为外语的教学环境下，象形记忆法能否优于传统的词汇教学 方法还有待研究。 在过去的几十年中，研究者们在词汇领域进行了大量的研究，并提出了许 多词汇教学方法，技巧等。很多研究表明，与其他学习方法相比，记忆术可以在 很大程度上提高二语词汇的即时测试成绩。对于大多数中国学生，特别是英语成 绩较低的学生来说，由于缺乏有效的记忆方式，学生们的词汇学习往往事半功倍， 成效甚微。象形记忆法正是为词汇记忆提供的一个解决方法。本研究以中国成人 教育的学生为研究对象，旨在研究在英语为外语的环境下象形记忆法在课堂教学 中的可行性和有效性。本文探讨了两个问题： 一、与传统词汇教学法相比，象形记忆法是否能更有效地巩固学生对词汇 的短期和长期记忆效果? 二、学生对象形记忆法持什么样的态度? 本研究采用一个班，即为实验班也为控制班。第三，四周使用象形记忆法进 行教学，单词为二十个。第五，六周用传统的解释词义、给例句的方法教另外的 难易程度相当的二十个单词。之后，立即对学生进行词汇测试，即测试短期记忆 效果，一周后进行同样的测试内容，测试长期记忆效果。将所收集的数据用s p s s 软件进行配对样本t 检测。得到的结论如下：1 ，象形记忆法与传统的教学方法
