Methods of applying English original movies in an English listening and speaking course 7 5.1 The choice of English movies 75.2 Explain the background of the movies and correlative vocabulary before watching 75.3 Set the task of watching English movies for the students 85.4 Retell the movie content or adapt the scenario 85.5 Suggestion 86.Conclusion 9Bibliography 10内容摘要如今,随着教育现代化和教学设备的发展,教学方法也正在改变。教育现代化的进程已经极大地促进了英语教学改革。值得注意的是,那种单一的,枯燥的教学模式:解释新词,听录音,做练习,并检查答案盛行已久。为了改变这种单一的,枯燥的教学方法,有效地提高英语学习者的听力理解能力,许多英语教师一直在探索,找到不同的教学方法,其中英语电影用于英语教学被认为是取得这一目标的有效途径。在本文中,作者试图研究英文电影用于中学英语听力教学是否可行,是否会有效地提高学生们学习听说的学习兴趣,学习动机和是否更有效地提高学生们的听力理解能力。笔者发现现在运用英文电影进行英语听说教学在大学中比较普遍,但是在中学还比较少,相关研究也并不多,经过本人的调查与自身体验,通过运用生动的视听材料进行听说教学,以英文原声电影为例,学生可以通过享受电影更好地掌握英语。为了证明这种方法的可行性,笔者查阅了一些相关的理论如:克拉申的输入假说,情感过滤假说,动机理论等。所有这些理论为英文电影应用于中学听说教学提供了足够的理论基础。除此之外,作者还借鉴了国内外相关的研究进一步为调查研究提供强有力的理论依据。本文中作者将要分析运用英文电影在中学英语听说教学中的可行性及其优势,并提出几种典型的运用英文电影进行听说教学的方法。关键词:英语电影;听说;教学i1AbstractNowadays, methods and equipments for teaching are changing with the development of modernization of education. The reforms of English teaching have been greatly promoted by the process of education modernization. It is noteworthy that a sole and boring teaching mode: explaining new words, listening to the tapes, doing the exercises and checking the answers has been conducted for quite a period of time. In order to change this sole and boring teaching method, improve English learners listening comprehension abilities efficiently, many English teachers have been exploring to find different teaching methods, of which teaching with English movies is considered to be an effective way of obtaining that goal. In this paper,the author tries to study whether it is feasible and effective to have listening and speaking teaching lessons with English movies for high school students. The author has found that it is normal to teach listening and speaking English through English movies in college but it has not been broadly spread in high school. Through the authors research and experience, by using authentic audio visual or audiovisual materials, original English films for example,students can better learn the authentic English in enjoying films. In order to justify the application of this method, the author referred to some related theories: the Input Hypothesis and Affective Hypothesis of Krashen, and Motivation theory and so on. All these theories provide sufficient theoretical basis for listening and speaking teaching with English movies. Further more, the author also presents strong theoretical support to this paper through the close study of related researches both home and abroad. The paper discusses the use of original English films in English Listening and Speaking course from the aspects of its feasibility, advantages,and teaching methods.Key Words: English movies; listening and speaking course; teachingii1. IntroductionWith the rapid development of technology today, the available information in English can be greatly enriched and there are all kinds of audio-visual materials, so we can use this information to bring learners into a three-dimensional audio-visual world. Changes in learning environment and conditions have been prompting scholars and educators to study teaching methods continuously which adapt to the development of education. “English Curriculum Requirements on College English Teaching” has also made clear that: given the rapid growth of the number of college students and available educational resources are relatively limited, we should make full use of multimedia and opportunities brought by network technology development, use new teaching model to improve the sole and boring teaching mode. New teaching model should be supported by modern information technology, especially internet technology that can make teaching develop towards integrated learning which practices mainly in listening and speaking and a little in reading and writing, while English movies are adapting to this multimedia teaching mode. According to the discovery by many researchers, we can make full use of the English movies audio resources and put them into teaching. We can use the movie language as learning materials and improve students listening comprehension ability with its audio-visual effects. Whats more, English movies can also make learners know the social and cultural background knowledge of English-speaking countries, expand the learners knowledge, combine entertainment to teaching, enhance the teacher-student interaction and carry out the purpose of increasing the overall quality of learners. In this research, in the multimedia environment, English movies are to be adopted to improve students listening comprehension. At present, many researches on using English movies on English teaching in our country focus on college teaching but less on high school education. In view of this, the author tries to make a study in high school to explore effective ways of listening and speaking teaching can meet the following purposes. First, it will provide an experimental sample for English listening and speaking teaching researches in high school. Second, this paper also provides some valuable theoretical reference for listening and speaking teaching in high school. In addition, this article provides many useful methods and suggests for English teachers.102. Literature Review2.1 Studies of applying original movies in an English listening and speaking course in college.In 2004, the ministry of education requires that the goal of college English teaching is cultivating students all-around ability, especially the capability of listening and speaking. It also requires that teachers should make use of the advanced technology to provide a better environment for the students. The possibility of applying original movies in an English listening and speaking course in college has been analyzed in an article called “English Listening and Speaking Teaching and English Films ” (钱红,2007)She analysis it from three aspects. Firstly, she analysis the advantages to use English original movies in English listening and speaking class. Secondly, she analysis the possibility of applying English movies in college English class. Thirdly, she analysis how to use original films to optimize English class.2.2 Studies of applying original movies in an English listening and speaking course in senior high school.Not like that in college, applying English movies in English listening and speaking course are not adopted abroad in senior high school. According to the authors research, less than one tenth school in China use this method. Articles about this aspects are also not so many. Most of the senior high schools are still using the traditional listening and speaking teaching method. This influence the students learning interest to a great extent. Wang Lingxia has analyzed the application of English movies in high school in her article.(王灵霞,2012) She pointed out the problems of the teaching form of listening and speaking in high school. To solve the problems, she elaborated her opinions in the following three aspects. Firstly, the advantages of teaching English by English movies. Secondly, the skills of choosing English films. Thirdly, the class activities which are related to the English movies.2.3 Theory2.3.1 The Input TheoryKrashen asserts that we acquire language in only way-by receiving comprehensible input,that is,by understanding messages. If the input contains forms and structures just beyond the learners current level of competence in the language,then both comprehension and acquisition will occur.“Comprehensible input and the strength of the filter are the true cause of second language acquisition.”(Krashen,1982). If a learner wants to acquire a language two conditions must be met. The first is sufficient comprehensible input containing i+l and the second is a low filter to allow input”in”.An acquirer can “move” from a stage i(where i is the acquirers level of competence)to a stage i+1(where i+1 is that stage immediately following i along some natural order) by understanding language containing i+1.(Krashen&Terell,1983) Context or extra linguistic information will make comprehensible input possible.The Input Hypothesis has obvious implications for language teaching. First,as much comprehensible input as possible must be present. On one hand,the teacher should select and adopt the best way of oral input and create a rich environment for English listening and speaking. A language teacher should not only organize such classroom activities as role-play, daily report but also provide more oral input. Watching English movies can increase the acquirers exposure to more comprehensible input. Second the methods that help comprehension are important. The main function of second language teaching is to help make input comprehensible. (Krashen,1982)The teacher should make use of both linguistic and extra-linguistic means. Third,materials and input should be interesting and relevant to the acquirer.2.3.2 Motivation TheoryEdward Deci defined intrinsic motivation: “Intrinsically motivated activities are ones for which there is no apparent reward except the activity itself. People seem to engage in the activities for their own sake and not because they lead to an extrinsic reward. Intrinsically motivated behaviors are aimed at bringing about certain internally rewarding consequences namely,feelings of competence and self-determination.”(Deci, 1975)Brown expressed his opinion of extrinsic motivation: “Extrinsically motivated behaviors,on the other hand are carried out in anticipation of reward from outside and beyond the self.”(Brown,1994:38)Maslow claimed that “intrinsic motivation is clearly superior to extrinsic. According to this hierarchy of needs,we are ultimate motivated to achieveself-actualization,once the basic physical,safety,and community needs are met.We have said that some students study a language because they have an idea of something which they wish to achieve. It has been suggested that there are two main types of such motivation,integrative motivation and instrumental motivation.” (Maslow 1970:23)For integrative motivation,students need to be attracted by the culture of the target language community,and in the strong form of integrative motivation they wish to integrate themselves into the culture. A weaker form of such motivation would be the desire to know as much as possible about the culture of target language community. Instrumental motivation describes a situation in which students believe that mastery of the target language will be instrumental in getting them a better job, position or status. The language is an instrument in their attainment of such a goal.3. Possibility of applying English original movies in an English listening and speaking courseThe introduction of computer and other modernization of information equipment provides sufficient hardware to improve the listening and speaking teaching. The application of the information equipment makes it possibility to access a large number of the latest and most complete information through Internet. They can quickly provide the visual image, rich visual content to create a simulation scenario, and strengthen the teaching process in the visual. It obviously broaden the range of the listening and speaking materials. The most important factor of choosing a good material is whether it can attract the students. Interest is the best teacher. Only when the students are interested in what they listen and watch, they can understand it easier. The author holds the opinion that English original movies just have this feature. Whats more, understanding the English film is also a goal of listening and speaking teaching. English teachers can utilize the English films in the listening and speaking teaching plan step by step. 4. Advantages of applying English original movies in an English listening and speaking course4.1 Stimulating students interest in learning EnglishOne of the most important reasons why the students can not master listening and reading skills is that they are not interested in the materials, especially for high school students. Applying English movies in English listening and speaking course can relax the students and arouse the students curiosity. The movies have plots as the TV series do. Students in high school mostly don not have time to watch TV let alone movies. They can concentrate on the materials if they are interested in them. So if the teacher choose a proper English movie, it will be much easier to attract the students, and listening and speaking exercise can be done smoothly.4.2 It is good for the establish of language senseA lot of scholars hold the opinion that the best way to learn a foreign language is to go abroad and make himself a part of the environment. As for the students who dont have the chance to go abroad, the best way is to enjoy the English movies. Movies can be regard as the window of a country. They can reflect the life of a person even the society. The language in the movies usually are used in normal life at a high frequency. During the process of watching English films students can listen the natives voice. Gradually, they will imitate the voice of the foreigners in the film. With the time goes by, they can establish a sense of language under this kind of environment. So applying English films in the listening and speaking course is good for the establish of language sense.4.3 Providing cultural inputLanguage is a part of the culture. Every language is a reflection of a certain culture and is a tool for spreading culture. A person who only knows the language but the culture cannot understand and use the language he learns completely. Language cant exist without culture. It is not enough to learn a language purely if we want to master the ability to communicate. For example, if we just know the meaning of a phrase but dont know when to use it, whether it is polite or impolite. English films are the unity of language and culture. If we apply the English films in English listening and speaking course, we will make it possible that students can learn the culture of the west, especially the European culture and at the same time they can learn how to use the language under a certain culture. This can totally avoid the students use English with the background of Chinese culture. When the students have learned the culture of the country they can easily understand the dialog in the films even inferring the following plot. Whats more, after watching a lot of English films, not only will the listening and speaking skills improve, but also the reading comprehension will be influenced.4.4 Providing real listening materialsAuthentically, languages in English films can reflect the usage of English in English spoken country. It enables students to grasp the authentic knowledge of the language so that students can reduce linguistic and cultural barriers in communication. Just as a lot of foreign teachers teaching in the classroom, the English original film is the first-hand materials for English learners.4.5 Cultivating communicate competenceCommunicative competence not only refers to the ability to apply the grammatical rules of a langua
