内容摘要 麦尔维尔是公认的美国十九世纪文学史上最伟大的作家之一，其代表作白 鲸以其惊心动魄的捕鲸场面，对哲学孜孜以求的深层探索，并配以浪漫史诗般 的风格达到了美国十九世纪小说的巅峰。然而，麦尔维尔在世时，倍受冷落，无 人问津。直到二十世纪二十年代，麦尔维尔及其作品重见天日，同时掀起了复兴 麦尔维尔的热潮，并涌现了大量相关的评论文章，麦尔维尔作为伟大作家的地位 也因此得到了确立。时至今日，麦尔维尔本人及其作品仍深为人们所关注。 然而，经过大量调查研究，笔者发现，虽然研究其代表作白鲸及其白 鲸中悲剧因素者不乏其人，但极少有人关注其后期作品皮埃尔和比利巴 德以及这些作品中的悲剧因素，更不用说这三部悲剧作品中折射出的共同元素。 事实上，研究发现，三部悲剧作品均与麦尔维尔的悲剧倾向密切相关。 麦尔维尔一生坎坷，壮志难酬。母亲的冷落，家庭的变故，社会转型带来的 巨大变化，尤其是写作上的屡屡失败，再加上本人天生悲剧气质铸就了麦尔维尔 强烈的悲剧倾向，而这种悲剧倾向必然要体现在其作品中，并在作品中表现出了 作者的悲剧观念，从而也就有了写作风格上从前期海洋小说到后期悲剧小说的转 变，并因此产生了诸如自鲸、皮埃尔和比利巴德这样伟大的悲剧作 品。 在本文中，笔者首先从社会角度分析受麦尔维尔悲剧倾向之影响，亚哈和比 利巴德悲剧命运的成因，并对善恶做了伦理和哲学层面的探讨。亚哈非同般 的伟大而崇高的捕鲸目的以及万物背后潜存的恶念将亚哈引向死亡的境地，而原 始与文明、善与恶的争斗则把比利推向死亡的深渊。 其次，受麦尔维尔悲剧倾向之影响，笔者运用羞感心理学和荣格的心理类型 学对亚哈和皮埃尔的悲剧命运做了心理层面的探讨。羞感心理学着重讨论羞感在 人的成长过程中所起的作用以及无法正确处理羞感可能引起的严重的甚至灾难 性的后果。心理类型学根据力比多的流向规定了两种态势，即外倾态势和内倾态 势，并指出过度内倾和外倾可能导致的精神分裂或恐怖抑郁症。亚哈和皮埃尔无 法正确处理羞感以及过度的内倾态度决定了二者不可避免的悲剧命运。 在本文中，笔者从对麦尔维尔悲剧倾向分析入手，运用社会和心理批评方法 论述受其悲剧倾向的影响，亚哈、皮埃尔和比利巴德悲剧命运的成因及其带给 人们的启示，从而有助于进一步了解麦尔维尔的悲剧倾向。
