Dreaming about whether you would want to read minds, see through walls, or have superhuman strength may sound silly, but it actually gets to the heart of what really matters in your life. Every day in our work, we are inspired by the people we meet doing extraordinary things to improve the world. They have a different kind of superpower that all of us possess: the power to make a difference in the lives of others. Were not saying that everyone needs to contribute their lives to the poor. But we do think that you can live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. Find an issue you are interested in and learn more. Volunteer or, if you can, contribute a little money to a cause. Whatever you do, dont be a bystander. Get involved. You may have the opportunity to make your biggest difference when youre older. But why not start now? Our own experience working together on health, development, and energy the last twenty years has been one of the most rewarding parts of our lives. It has changed who we are and continues to fuel our optimism about how much the lives of the poorest people will improve in the years ahead.4. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 refer to? C In the depths of the French Guianese rainforest, there still remain unusual groups of indigenous(土著的) people. Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own social customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony(殖民地) of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they should live by the French law. However, their remote locations mean that the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into an interesting area of “lawlessness” in the world. The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the effects of a Frenchman form Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2015 exploring the most remote corners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne. “I have a special love for the French Guianese people. I have worked there on and off for almost ten years,” says Gin. “Ive been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I dont see it as a lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom.” “I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,” continues Gin. “I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show different specific worlds more clearly.” His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic, which brings with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide.8. Why does the author feel surprised about the indigenous people in French Guiana? A. They seldom follow the French law. B. They often ignore the Guianese law. C. They are separated from the modern world. D. They are both Guianese and French citizens.9.Gin introduced the special world of the indigenous Guianese as _. A. a tour guide B. a geographer C. a film director D. a photographer10. What is Gins attitude towards the lives of the indigenous Guianese? A. Cautious. B. Doubtful. C. Uninterested. D. One reason for this is biological. One important biological factor that helps women live longer is the difference in hormones between men and women. 12 Between the ages of about 12 and 50, women produce hormones that are involved in fertility(生育能力). These hormones also have a positive effect on the heart and blood flow. In fact, women are less likely to have high blood pressure or to die from heart attacks.13 They help the body defend itself against some kinds of infections. This means that women generally get sick less often and less seriously than men. The common cold is a good example: women, on average, get fewer colds than men. 14 Scientists are still not exactly sure how influence aging, but they believe that they do. The term has been used to describe the United States as a nation created from people who came here from many different countries. A Frenchman who was living in America expressed the idea more than 200 years ago. J. Hector de Crevecoeur published a book called Letters From an American Farmer in 1782. He wrote that American had people from many different countries. He said that they would become a new people whose work would one day change the world. For many years, Americans generally accepted the idea of their country as a melting pot. They welcomed immigrants from many nations. Those foreign people settled down, learned the new language and built their life on this new land. Yet some of those immigrants criticized the melting pot idea. They felt they were forced to lose their culture and language in order to be accepted in America. Other people also criticized the idea.
