This means that they take a year ff, to do something else, before they start their studies. For most students, spending time in foreign countries is the favourite activity and Australia is the favourite place to go. Many parents, teachers, and business people agree that travelling can teach important values. “After a year of travelling, I felt Id grown up. I had learnt the importance of relationships with people, on all sorts of levels.” There are many companies around the world that welcome these students on their projects helping people in poorer countries, or even in your home county. Although you dont get paid for your work, this kind of work can teach important skills decision making and finding answers to problems, for example that will help a student in a job one day. Finally, getting some knowledge and experience in an area you hope to study or work in one day will always be very useful. If several university graduates are applying for the same job, gap year work experience allows you to say: “Ive already had some experience of this kind of work.” And that can get you the job! 56. These days, _ students in the UK take a gap year. A. some B. all C. many D. a few 57. Travelling can teach you values such as learning about _. A. jobs B. relationships C. flights D. money 58. University graduates with some work experience often get _ than graduates without experience. A. jobs more easily B. more money C. more important jobs D. more jobs in other countries B My name is Zhang Bei. When I was 13 years old, a boy gave me an important gift. It was a smile. It was the early autumn of my first year at a junior high school, and my old school was far away. As a result, no one knew who I was. I was lonely, and afraid to make friends with anyone. Every time I heard the other students talking and laughing, I felt my heart break. I couldnt talk to anyone about my problem, and I didnt want my parents to worry about me. Then one day, my classmates talked happily with their friends, but I sat at my desk unhappily as usual. At the moment, a boy entered the classroom. I didnt know who he was. He passed me and then turned back. He looked at me and, without a word, smiled. Suddenly, I felt the touch of something bright and friendly. It made me feel happy, lively and warm. That smile changed my life. I started to talk with the other students and made friends. Day by day, I became closer to everyone in my class. The boy with the lucky smile has become my best friend now. One day, I asked him why he smiled, but he couldnt remember smiling at me! It doesnt matter because all the dark days have gone. Now I believe that the world is what you think it is. If you think you are lonely, you might always be alone. So smile at the world and it will smile back. 59. Why was the smile an important gift? A. Zhang Beis old school was far away. B. Zhang Bei didnt know who the boy was. C. The smile didnt mean anything to the boy. D. It made Zhang Bei feel happy, lively and warm. 60. How did the smile change her life? A. She became best friends with the boy. B. She began to make friends. C. She realized that its important to smile at people. D. Her parents didnt worry about her any more. 61. Where does she now think her feeling of unhappiness came from? A. From herself. B. From the children at the new school. C. From her old school. D. From other people in the world. C Homesick is a compound word made up of “home” and “sick”. You know what each word means on its own, of course. But think about what the words mean when they are used together. “Homesick” means “longing for home; unhappy away from home”. In other words, it means “sick for home”. Now think for a minute about the word “seasick”. If you change the word “home” in the definition(定义) to the word “sea”, will the definition fit “seasick”? Does “seasick” mean “longing for sea; unhappy away from sea”? It means something quite different. “Seasick” means “sick because of sea”. When you are seasick, the only place you want to be is not at sea. Have you heard of a person being heartsick? Heartsick does not mean that something is wrong with a persons heart. It means “terribly disappointed and sad”. People are heartsick when they are hurt down deep inside, or when they feel as if their hearts were broken. And so, when you are carsick, you are “made sick by the movement of a car on the road”. You are sick because of the car, not sick for it. You can see, then, that not all compound words are what they seem at first glance(乍一看) . Think about the words “handbook”, “handshake”, and “handbag”. You may want to write definitions for them. 62. The word “seasick” means “_”. A. to want very much to go to the sea B. heartsick C. to be sick because of the sea D. terrible 63. When we say a person is heartsick, we mean that _. A. hes terribly disappointed and sad B. his heart needs testing C. something is wrong with his heart D. he has a weak heart 64. The underlined part “the only place you want to be” means “_”. A. where you go at last B. where you want to be least C. where you want to be most D. the last place you go to 65. The writer wants to tell us that _. A. there are many compound words in English B. the definitions of compound words are interesting C. the definitions of some compound words are hard to guess D. not all compound words mean what they seem to be 第 II卷(非选择题 共五大题 共 45分) 五 . 完成句子(本大题共 5小题,每小题 2分,共 10分) 根据所给中文意思完成句子,每空只填一个单词。 66. 这些词很有用,为什么不写下它们?
