the first time i got on a horse. when i was a little boy aged two, my mom agreed to let me take a short ride and that was it! from then on, i drove my parents crazy begging for a horse. when i was four, i had mutism, in which children stop speaking in certain social situations. i went days, weeks, months without a sound at school. at most, i might quietly whisper to a friend. i suffered silently through school until i was ten when a psychologist had an idea. he asked me what i wanted more than anything else in the world. he explained i was going to be given an opportunity to work for that. and i was permitted to whisper the answer in my mothers ear,“a horse.” i was to get a pony, but i had to live up to my end of the bargain. i had a chart of weekly tasks i had to accomplish. i had to answer the phone five times per week, something i had never done before. i had to say one word to my teacher at school and the list went on. for a child with mutism, saying one word to someone can be like climbing mount qomolangma. i did everything that was asked of me and the day came. his name was sequoia, whom i fell in love with immediately. when i was in sequoias presence, i forgot all about my problems and felt strong and secure. i am a fully participating member of society these days. my horse and i made it through a masters degree. i may have made it otherwise, but im not sure. i feel i owe my life to the horse and i try to give it back to him every day. he has given me the best gift i could ever imagine, my while at the end of the day no good will come of it and someone is bound to get hurt, try telling that to someone whos excited to relay the latest piece of juicy news.most people have some awareness when saying something we know we shouldnt. as it is slipping out of our mouths, we start to feel uncomfortable. we have a sense of conflict between finishing the sentence that may draw attention but wont make anyone look good and awkwardly stopping midstory. there are those who after spreading gossip end with a wellmeaning, “i shouldnt have said anything and i cant really tell you how i heard it.” not any better. once out, they may feel good for a moment, but theyre just as likely to regret their decision. by this time, it is too late.that said, some people just dont notice or pay attention to the voice in their head saying “dont”, and others actively ignore it. in the end, the results are the same. with our lack of sensitivity, we say things that should never be said and often dont stop long enough to realize that we have not only hurt others, but we have unintentionally hurt ourselves. given this, why do people gossip? for some, it feels good to be in control of knowledge that others may not know.talking about others can become a habit and unless you work hard to break it, you may discover that others distance themselves from you. after all, if you cant be trusted to keep secrets and not share information, people may choose not to have you as their friend. we have two ears and just one mouth. when in doubt, it is always better to listen than to speak.【文章大意】本文是一篇议论文,论述了有些人热衷于说闲话的原因,并说明这种习惯的坏处以及如何改正这一不良习惯。【难句分析】while at the end of the day no good will come of it and someone is bound to get hurt, try telling that to someone whos excited to relay the latest piece of juicy news.分析:该句为主从复合句,句中while引导让步状语从句,whos excited to relay the latest piece of juicy news为who引导的定语从句,修饰先行词someone。 8whats the closest meaning of the underlined word “relay”?ashow. bcover. cspread. dget. 9which statement is not the reason for people being conscious of saying something they know they shouldnt?athey feel not good when they leak out it.bthey arent interested in it.cthey have a sense of conflict during saying it.dthey probably regret saying it. 根据第二段的第二句“as it is slipping out of our mouths,we start to feel uncomfortable.”可知,一旦说出口,我们便感到不舒服;根据第二段第三句中的“we have a sense of conflict”可知,我们对是否要说出口会感到很矛盾;根据第二段的倒数第二句“once out, they may feel good for a moment, but theyre just as likely to regret their decision.” 10why do people say something that should never be said and can hurt others?abecause they want to hurt others.bbecause they hate this kind of people.cbecause they dont know each other well.dbecause they are lack of sensitivity. 根据第三段的第三句“with our lack of sensitivity,we say things that should never be said and often dont stop long enough to realize that we have not only hurt others, but we have unintentionally hurt ourselves.” 11from the last paragraph, we can know that _.awe should speak less and listen morebwe cant keep secretscwe havent many friendsdwe should talk about others as much as possible答案与解析:a考查细节理解。根据最后一句“when in doubt,it is always better to listen than to speak”可知,我们应当多听少说,故a项正确。根据最后一段的第二句“after all,if you cant be trusted to keep secrets that several athletes, including us swimmer michael phelps, had circular bruises on their bodies. these bruises were the result of “cupping(拔火罐) therapy”, a traditional chinese medicinal practice that has been around for more than 2,000 years. many athletes say that they have benefited from the therapy. phelps used the therapy in the fall of 2014 and has used it about twice a week since, reported abc news. another us swimmer, dana vollmer, also believes that “it really helps with blood flow” however, some have said that the supposed health effects result from peoples feeling that the treatment works, rather than any physical effect of the treatment. to figure out cupping therapy has any physical effect, last year researchers from germany carried out a test in which a false treatment was provided. in the study, the same type of cups was used in the real treatment and the false treatment. but in the false treatment, the cups had a hole at the top so that they couldnt create the proper suction(吸力) the tested patients, who suffered from a disorder that caused a lot of pain, were told that they would receive either a traditional cupping or “soft cupping”. but they were not informed that the socalled “soft cupping” was a false treatment. it turned out that most patients correctly guessed which kind of cupping they had received. in both groups, patients also experienced about the same reductions in pain. “the results suggest the effects of cupping therapy might come from factors that are not necessarily part of the treatment itself,” the researchers told the live science website. the question of whether cupping therapy works still needs to be answered. “but because the treatment is relatively safe and it could be helpful for some people, the therapy can be used as part of a comprehensive treatment program involving other exercises, nutritional choices and lifestyle changing,” dr brent bauer, director of the us complementary and integrative medicine program at mayo clinic, told live science.【文章大意】本文主要介绍了中国传统医疗方式拔火罐的实际疗效问题。【难句分析】the tested patients, who suffered from a disorder that caused a lot of pain, were told that they would receive either a traditional cupping or “soft cupping”分析:本句是一个复合句。who引导非限定性定语从句,在从句中作主语,先行词为patients;第一个that引导定语从句,在从句中作主语,修饰先行词disorder;第二个that引导宾语从句,在从句中不作句子成分。译文:那些因身体紊乱而遭受痛苦的实验病人被告知要么接受传统的拔火罐治疗要么接受“软火罐”治疗。12why is michael phelps mentioned in the passage?ato give athletes a new way to swim faster.bto provide athletes with a new way of treatment.cto introduce the topic on cupping therapy.dto show swimmers suffer from disorders.答案与解析:c考查推理判断。根据文章前两段的整体内容可推知,提到运动员菲尔普斯是为了导入文章的话题,即:拔火罐疗法是否有效,故选c。13the purpose of the test by researchers from germany was to _.apromote the health effects of cupping therapybsee whether cupping therapy has a physical effectccompare traditional cupping with the soft cuppingdcompare cupping therapys effects on different groups of people答案与解析:b考查细节理解。根据第四段“to figure out cupping therapy has any physical effect, last year researchers from germany carried out a test in which a false treatment was provided.”可知,实验的目的是验证拔火罐是否真的有效。14what can be learned from the passage?adifferent people need different types of cupping therapy.bthe real treatment and false treatment almost have the same effects.cthe results show that cupping therapy is not part of the treatment.dcupping therapy is only effective when used with lifestyle changing.答案与解析:b考查细节理解。根据倒数第二段的“in both groups, patients also experienced about the same reductions in pain.”可知,实验表明两种不同的拔火罐方法效果是一样的。15according to dr brent bauer, cupping therapy _.ais a fast and easy treatment for people to carry outbis a newly invented way to cure some diseasescneeds a long period of time to take effectdcan be used together with other treatments答案与解析:d考查细节理解。根据最后一段中的“but because the treatment is relatively safe and it could be helpful for some people, the therapy can be used as part of a comprehensive treatment program involving other exercises, nutritional choices and lifestyle changing”可知,dr brent bauer认为拔火罐可以和其他方法一起配合治疗。a项错在a fast and easy treatment,文章中并没有得出这样的结论;b项的a newly invented way,与文章中的“a traditional chinese medicinal.2,000 years”不符,且文中并没有提到拔火罐能治愈疾病;c项错在needs a long period of time,文章中并没有提到拔火罐的时效问题。第二部分七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(2018济南模拟) while you are travelling abroad,
